I absolutely HATE seeing Servals banned. They are so much smaller and more docile than Tigers, the comparison is like comparing owning a goldfish to owning a Killer Whale! Servals pose absolutely NO THREAT to the public. Their prey is small (birds, rodents, rabbits, etc.) The largest prey the biggest male Serval can take down is a newborn Thompson's Gazelle (10 lbs). Exotic animals are not dangerous in the right hands. Servals are not closely related to Leopards!
@talkingtree4 Thay are both. some may be wild and some are domestic. Keep in mind that many of these cats were kept by Egyptians as pets to guard the grain storage from rats. Today we use ferrel cats for this. It really depends on the cat, how they are raised and their temperment. These are larger than the domestic cat and can do some real damage with their claws. A domesticated Serval usually is fully declawed .
I don't disagree with this. I do not believe we should be selling and breeding exotic pets anymore to be kept as pets just because with many exotics there's a high chance of being abused in their home... However, why not just take exotics from abusive homes and let them be rehomed ? Why not just let the people and exotic animals who love each other stay together-- just not allow people to acquire NEW exotics (unless maybe through adoption / rescue...). That's how I feel.
After watching this, I want to get one now!! What a GREAT creature to share your life with. As long as people fully understand the feeding and excersize requirements and are ready to provide for the "long term", I think this should be a legitimate choice to own.
servals are gorgeous creatures there are no deaths by servals they are a less of a theat than a comman dog if you want to no more about servals and other exotic cats go to it a good site

Oh for goodness sake! Even a domesticated dog can be a dangerous animal in the right circumstances, and you don't see some animal expert trying to get them classified as dangerous. Besides, the serval is probably a lot quieter than any dog out there.
Is the animal declawed? Thats what I want to know, because if they declawed him, then they know that he is a threat. North america is the place to declaw even domestic cats (correct me if i'm wrong)
Jeff, what a wonderful animal Gizmo is! I had a Bengal named Gizmo. He looks like a gentle, loving pet. People are very ignorant, and unless they've had one, cannot understand how brilliantly smart and engaging and almost "human" these cats can be.
Also, why would you declaw him? If you are worried about your children's safety, don't get a serval in the first place. declawing cats is like amputating their fingers. If they really cared about that serval, they wouldn't have do something so horrible to him.
Theres nothing wrong in owning a serval, but there are too many irresponsible owners and there are so many abandoned house cats in shelters awaiting euthanasia to warrant ever buying cats, wild or domestic, from breeders. Go save a kitten at your animal shelter instead.
I would love to adopt a Serval as a pet! Just... so expensive, but worth it!
Also, most lesser cats such as the Serval don't adopt their feral instincts when they're raised from youth to adult age in a normal home. The instincts still exist in the cat, but they have no use for them, so they stay dormant until they're needed. I don't think "Someone falling down" would trigger the return of the instincts... That's just silly.
Servals being around human's a very young age ARE just cats very Big cats its like saying Bengals are a Lion!!! there very loving and are more like dogs!!! there amazing cats and are not wild I mean they may come from Africa in nature but that's just because that's were the breed comes from doesn't make it wild plus its sometimes mixed with a normal house cat!! they are truly beautiful and wonderful cats its just literally a mini cheetah or leopard
Ive recently even became aware that this breed existed, and instantly fell in love with it. Howmuch did you pay for your serval kitten, and how much are the avg vet bills, food costs..? Id like to own one in the near future :) Ive read that they are very loyal to the family, and playful. But leave it to these 'left-wing douchebags' to voice their opinions on what other people should have as a pet. Pit bulls can be way more violent than these cats but no ones pushing that issue!
You got support here in Maryland! We too are trying to once and for all put an end to the FASCIST laws seizing loved pets from their responsible owners. There have been ZERO documented serval attacks in the United States (and zero documented attacks of servals in the wild) and almost all experts will agree that this cat is one of the easiest domesticated of all the felidae family. They have been kept as pets in Africa for thousands of years and are no more dangerous than any domestic house cat.
My family had a 75 pound dog and two cats. The cats did more damage at 4 pounds each. If you can have a 40 pound dog,why question a 40 pound cat. Our neighbors had a young male lion and an Alsatian (German Shepherd). After the Alsatian bit a child in the head, the family was told to get rid of the lion...even though male well fed lions are lazy and docile if neutered and declawed. I grew up playing with that lion but was scared of the dog!
I wonder what the laws are in California. I have a breeder down the street but I don't he walks his exotic cats. When I get a big ass house, I am getting a serval or bobcat.
Breeds are not dangerous. It is temperment. I have no fear of Gizmo....but I would be very hesitant in wallking into cages of some other servals. Gozmo lived in a house whith children and people. It is a different cat than one which grew up and lives in a CAGE.
Actually what happened was that The cat was approved and licensed by the local Animal Control. However that individual was sent to Iraq and when the new Animal control officer was asked about it, he found that the cat was considered a wild animal and pulled the registration. The town was small and patrons supported theowner, but the problem is this cat fell under Federal laws. The town council voted to allow the cat to stay .
Servals are under Federal protection under the wild animal act. This can be the main program as they are classified as dangerous wild animals. Although they can cause some damage most which are kept as pets are totally declawed. A domestic house cat can cause more damage.
One of my boyfriends had one of these but his parents bought him because he was kept in a cage so small that he couldn't turn around and they took care of him for like a year or so, guess they got a little attached lol!, and now that serval lives happily at a big cat rescue (:
Obviously that guy was a dog lover since he had dogs. There are so many cases of dogs like pitts and rotties attacking people so how come it's all right to have one of them?
He does not own a dog. Only another cat. We brought the dog in (which was owned by someone else) to show what would happen because many claimed that it was a danger to neighborhood dogs and cats.
I would be more concerned about the stray dog wondering my neighborhood street and not think twice about a serval that is walking on a leash with its' family. Any complain filed against you and your family obviously came from an ignorant person who has not taken the time to research these cats, probably because his time is too consumed with butting into the lives of others. It is unfortunate that this happened, and I plan to watch Pt 2 and 3 to see the outcome, hopefully a positive one.
The story behind this video is that the owner asked animal control if it was permissable. The animal control officer found no problem and they even gave the cat a license. Then the officer had to go to Iraq. A new officer then charged that the cat was a danger and ordered them to get rid of it (after they had the cat for over a year).
If there was a fight between this cat and a dog, chances are the dog would win. The cat is totally declawed and could not properly defend itself.
if you raised him from a kitten, then he couldn't care for himself set into a "wild" environment and he should stay where he. He looks like he's taken great care with. And you made wondeful point he's not 600 pound cat, he's no worse than some dogs that are kept as pets. Wild are Animals, unless you raised them and they can't fend for themselves in the wild anymore.
ALL THE NON-EXOTIC DOMESTICATED CATS THAT I'VE MET ARE MORE VICIOUS THAN THIS SERVAL
