This is not a remake. Just looked it up on Amazon for info on the sound track. It says:

@dustyspiral No. The original was written by Edwin Hawkins and sung by Patti LaBelle for the soundtrack of a movie called "Leap Of Faith" starring Steve Martin.

Edwin Hawkins also wrote the modern version of the song "Oh Happy Day" (unless you thought they wrote that for Sister Act 2) and is considered a father of modern gospel sound.
