@LakeTiticaca100 I agree, for some of us who need good advice on how to cut your dog's nails, this is a really horrible way to demostrate this. why not show a dog with long nails. the dog on this video nails are way too short, and looks like the clippers are positioned a bit over the wick, which is what you really want avoid cutting.

This is terrible... very vague instructions, and spends more time telling you how to deal with cutting your dog to the quick than how to avoid it. Really bad job. Redo this video, please, and spend more time explaining how to avoid the quick, rather than trying to sell the first-aid product for hurting your dog. If you cut the nail as described at 1:26 you would cause bleeding. That is much too short and would be cutting the quik. In fact, if you cut the nail too short you can cause a lot of bleeding. Just today we had a case where a Golden Retriever lost 20% of his blood due to a severed artery (yes, artery) from a broken nail which bled for two hours until it was surgically repaired.

Here's a tip - if you want to clip your dog's nails do it after you bathe them so they are soft and less painful

This video is rather pointless if you have a dog that is a strong power breed that hates grooming activities. In that case, you must simply wait until your pup is asleep & get the nails then. If pup wakes up, then you have to just wait until he/she falls back asleep & get at the nails again. Sometimes you can clip just one nail a day. It's very frustrating.

You can smooth any rough or sharp edges by using a finger nail file. This should help.

@DreamstoneX My dog has 2 black nails. I was told at the groomers to look beneath the nail and you will usually be able to tell the difference between the quick and the nail. One of my dog's black nail looks pink underneath where the quick is, the other isn't but I can see the difference between the nail and the quick although they are both black because the nail part seems to go around the quick. Another way I was told is to see the length you are cutting on the others and go from there.

The best thing to do, to help you puppy to not be afraid of having his feet handled is to make it a habit of massaging his feet, touching between his toes, and pulling, softly on his nails each time you hold him. This will help him to not be fearful of having his paws/nails touched. You can do the same thing with his ears, so that ear cleaning is easier, and with his teeth, so that teeth cleaning is easier. @flippery8382 The nails are made up of two parts - the quick (which is pink) and the tip (which is white) very much like human nails. If the white tip of the dogs nails grow too long, they can cause the dog pain when walking, and loss of balance. The best length for the white tip to be only slightly longer than then quick.

My little rat terrier dog is very feisty with nail clippers. I had no one else to secure her as she yelped and pulled her feet away as I prepared to cut. Thanks to you tube I found out someone who had the same trouble but succeeded with filing. I got a heavy duty thick black emery board out of the bathroom and went to work. The dog was much calmer and almost went to sleep as I wore down the nails safely, close to the quick, and rounded the ends. Filing takes more time but it works and is easy.

Clipping your dogs nails too short can cause bleeding, but normally it is not serious, and the dog will quickly forgive you.

It is very common for dogs - that are not use to having their feet touched - to pull back. You can help your dog feel more comfortable by touching his feet often and then giving him a treat - or petting him and saying "Good Boy". After while, he will associate having his feet touched with something good happening.  Good Luck

i would do the same as that, but when i get ready to cut her nails, i only began to squeeze the handle and when i'm about to cut her nail, she cries out very loud like it hurts a lot. why? is she too scare or did i cut to farr into the pink that made her feel pain?

Yes, I believe your dog is reacting out of fear. One thing you can do to help her over come her fear of the nail clippers is to get some cheese, or other great tasting treats and show her the clippers and then give her a treat. Do this a few times, then let her smell the clippers and then give her a treat a few times. Then touch her feet with the clippers and then give her a treat. Then clip one nail and give her a treat. The best is doggy clippers to avoid chips. animal clippers offer a nice clean slice. No breakage creeping up to the quick. (not normally)

Yes, you can use human nail clippers, but dog clippers are better. Dog nail clippers have a larger curve and cut the nail in a more natural shape than human clippers.

It's best to take your time, go slowly, and clip very small sections at a time. Do this until the curved end portion of the nail is gone. Because it is very hard to tell where the quick is located, on black nails, I always clip these nails just a little, but more often then the clear nails. Hope this helps.
