William G Tapply who *literally* wrote the book on grouse hunting, used as high as #11 shot, with an open choke, for grouse, when they would flush late and close to the shooter. I never use larger than #8 and find it perfect.
@dbuschhorn yes, but then grouse aren't a particularly big burd plus the close range would make no 8 shot ideal I should imagine.... I just don't have the lolly for that kind of soprt myself!
I use 28 gram 7 1/2 shot for pigeons and does the job perfectly well out to about 30 or even 35 yards, there great because they are cheap and thats always an advantage when you fire a lot of cartridges in a day, but like you said 6 is bit better in something like a 32 gram for the further out and high birds :)
@duncanfr11 for real? full is a tad tight for me, I never even bother with 3/4 unless I'm shooting ABT or such, do you do a lot of pass shooting then?
@duncanfr11 so? apart from the fact that it's illegal, as as far as I'm aware, gamebore do not manufacture a non toxic Black gold loading, I really think that shooting game at that kind of range is a bit hit and miss, and consequently with a high risk of pricking birds, not something I personally encourage
Actually, you can shoot any shotshell that is shorter than the chamber in your gun, I have a 3 inch chamber O/U and i routinely shoot 2 3/4 and 3 inch shells depending what im shooting, but NEVER, EVER load a shell that is longer than the chamber in your gun.
@Crich775 I don't think I said you couldn't put 2 3/4" cartridges in a 3" I did say that you can't put cartridges in your gun that are longer than the chamber...... so , like I said, not putting 2 3/4 cartridges in a 21/2 chambered gun was my example.
@danebrewer10 Oh ok, sorry about that i must have misunderstood, i thought you had said that you cannot put a shell in your gun that is not the same size as your chambers length.
@Crich775 no worries, I think having a shell the same length as the chamber is supposed to be ideal as the wad does not have to expand to fill the space, plus I guess the shot coloumn does not have to expand either so when it reaches the forcing cone the pellets would be deformed more.....I should think it'd be something like that...
@danebrewer10 Yeah, its the fact that if you shoot a 2 1/2 inch shell in a 3 1/2 inch chamber the wad expands than hits the lip of the forcing cone and it(excuse the language)fucks the wad and the shot column up and you lose a lot of accuracy, thats mostly with a large jump, like i shoot 2 3/4 shells only(2 1/2 are not common in the US) in my 3 inch chamber gun, but i would never use it in a 3 1/2 inch chamber if i expected target level accuracy.
@Crich775 I think the loss in performance is not so much in terms of accuracy, as lets face it, it is a shotgun ; ) but is in the deformation of the pellets and so opening up the shot pattern, making it bigger and more gappy. as you say that 2 1/2 inch guns are not common in the US, I find it amusing that hevishot, supposedly offers it's "classic doubles" cartridges but do not offer a 2 1/2" loading, only 2 3/4 and 3", here, 21/2" guns are pretty common and a lot of manufacturers load for them
@danebrewer10 Well accuracy more in the terms of the shot pattern spreading out and developing gaping holes, and the de facto target round in the US is 2 3/4 with 3 being a magnum and a 3 1/2 a super mag, id be quite interested in trying a 2 1/2 inch gun sometime but havent found any over here in the states.
@Crich775 really there's not much difference, chiefly it'll be that the 2 1/2 chambered guns are likley to be side by sides and so will be quite a bit lighter than your average o/u so will kick a tad more, performance is exactly the same up to 34gm, then you really need a longer case, plus a heavier gun!
@duncanfr11 in what length? I see on their website they do a 67gm 3 1/2" load in 4,5 and 6 shot sizzem but I can't see anything biger than 50gm with (UK) BB or AAA shot I did read somewhere of a slightly hevaier cartridge, but I cant get hold of anything bigger I did hear of the 53gm loading on a forum, but in a 3" case I'd think you'd be hard pressed to fit much more in!
