An other awesome track that has not been included on the later albums and compilations. I used to think that Smoke Rings, The Fifth Column and The Seven Samurai remix were his best tracks ...until I heard Ni-Ten-Ichi-Ryu and some others like this one.
Whether its hip-hop, jungle, house/garage, the 90's had such an organic sound that we took for granted. It's crispness is perfection. It's beautiful to have the time to really appreciate the classic sound.
I idolised Photek back in the day. He used to turn up at Metalheadz on a Sunday. Couldn't miss him, he was the ginger ninja who needed more daylight. The Seventh Samurai was his heaviest tune, then he got a big label deal and started making weird downbeat Autechre kinda stuff. He was too far ahead for his own good. Check out Nico on No U Turn for the pinnacle of mid 90s DnB. Neutron is the darkest roller ever. It went downhill soon after that with Jazz Step???!!!. I blame Roni Size and Bukem.

You dont know how many times ive said this to people. Your not a real dj if u cant get a mix in within the first mix and keep the mix in time through the whole first song!! Like you said, only the best spinners can do this.
Man Metalheadz and D'n'B was so sick back in the day, I can't understand how it went from amazing tunes such as this to all that shit that people rave to at the moment...
@MorbidCorpse92 near enough every old school dnb track on youtube has someone moaning about the state of dnb today, theres plenty of amazing new(ish) artists: sabre, alix perez, d bridge, instra:mental and everything on autonomic, spectrasoul, bop, noisia, blu mar ten just to name a few. im not denying that theres alot of shocking dnb atm but the genre as a whole needs to move forward. peace
Gonna separate this comment into 4-5 parts so sorry if its unnecessarily long (and doing this for you tube so ...go figure) ... the key word for these recent artists is that they are GOOD but not... GREAT... I think the problem is the token effort a lot of artist seem to show in their work which people seem too content about because its readily available, accessible and unchallenging to the common ear....( 1 /4)
I'll admit stuff “The rain”, requires a selected taste and acuity to fully appreciate what goes on in the track, but wasn’t it nice that a small vestige of music was available for music lovers in a underground club as a counterpart and relief against ear worms that plaque the charts? Doesn’t it suck that the only way to hear these artists now is on the web than actively go out and find a collective who you can appreciate the music with ?( or now make due with only “decent” artists (2/4)
..... at the moment dnb and other electronic artists attempt to twick their sound so it appeals to a mass audience ( which is good.. and bad....) so nothing irks anybody.. which has the flipside of homogenising their sound to share more and more parallels with mainstream sensibilities.... but isn’t it boring if music becomes a strategy to maintain a stable plethora of fans than a way to and create something unique that makes your hair stand on end?.. (3 /4 )
your right though... the genre does need to move forward, but in a way that betters their predecessors and not just below par which, I am sorry, but new artist DO NOT aspire to do , and cannot do cause that doesn’t result in a stable income.. the scene is still alive.. but as a mere shadow of what it used to be.. and until someone comes along that is willing to push boundaries rather than add to the status quo.. then that’s all it will be..(4/4)
Trends change, artists get harder to discover, but life will move on regardless. The best thing about music is once it's been produced, we have it forever. Just do what I do and continue listening to these classic tunes, but also deep-search Youtube and other sites such as Discogs for artists you may have never heard before. Just because we live in a day where the soul has seemingly disappeared doesn't mean there aren't still examples of artists keeping the torch burning.
If it weren't for Youtube, I would have never discovered artists like Fanu or Seba. It's a great tool, so that makes it even more aggravating when corporations like WMG take down songs out of videos. They should be happy that people are becoming exposed to great tunes. IMO, it creates MORE demand and MORE of a willingness to search out and buy your favorite music.
Im one who can agree with your comment. Without Youtube,i would NEVER Know the world of Electronic Music,as im from a South American country, and would lose the chance to know Beauties from Techno/Jungle/Acid/Drum n Bass and many others.
@eduds6 But you have so much cocaine in South America. Can't you trade in the cocaine for good music or are you just stuck with cocaine? You shouldn't complain. You have very affordable cocaine. You bitch too much.
@eduds6 hehe, thank god for Youtube then yea? I went looking through my old CDs last night and found Photek - Forum and Function. I don't think there's a bad track on it except maybe Santiago, but that one just isn't my style. Best Photek tracks - Knitevision, UFO, The Water Margin, and Rings Around Saturn. Check 'em out, bro

The same thing about Techno and Minimal,2 genres that are losing their quality rapidly and being outshadowed by Barghain.
