It’s hard for me, as an American, to see our nation taking side that almost work against their own citizens. This question may seem very naive, I do apologize if it is. But, do all Americans have to pay to see a doctor ? I'm not even talking about major issues. Say, for example if you had a throat infection. Would you be able to see a doctor for free ? Also, would your medication be discounted if you were earning a low wage ?
@ravenbluesparrow From my understanding, medicine is heavily subsidized so you don't "pay" for most of the stuff. Your insurance company pays if a doctor sees you. You do get a discount through medicare and medicaid if you qualify.
By the way, I would trade my German health insurance for an HMO anytime, especially if I was very sick.
@groam6666 Thanks for responding to my question. I always thought the American healthcare system was very unfair. But, after gathering some info, it doesn't seem to be as bad as I assumed. America is allot more similar to my country than than I thought, I'm Australian. We have national healthcare here. But, most people with enough income choose to purchase insurance. People that can't afford insurance get discounted medication and GP consultations. Its a complex issue I guess.
@ravenbluesparrow I just wanted to add, even if you have insurance you WILL pay a copay, meaning that even if you have expensive insurance you still have to pay to see the doctor. And then they might not cover all of your expenses, depending on what kind of insurance you have they might not cover for treatment at all leaving you help less and trying to sell you house or take out a mortgage. Families can pay $10,000-$15,000/year and can't afford it and still might be denied coverage.

In Europe and most other "advanced" nations.. they feel its their governments responsibility to provide health care for their people.. It is done by either a nationalized system or a non profit private system. Here.. in America we feel people should pay for their healthcare personally.. through private "profit-driven" corporations. I have been waiting 7 YEARS for my doctors to start diagnosing me. (I live in the U.S. with serious spinal/joint issues) I pay $700/month! for this CORRUPT privatized "service" that I don`t get. I used to work for a insurance company. The first words to me from management we regulary expect and deny claims and ecpect 10% of claims to be denied. They fired me for providing my patients with info to get the benefits they were promised.

This question may seem very naive, I do apologize if it is. But, do all Americans have to pay to see a doctor ? I'm not even talking about major issues. Say, for example if you had a throat infection. Would you be able to see a doctor for free ? Also, would your medication be discounted if you were earning a low wage ?

@ravenbluesparrow From my understanding, medicine is heavily subsidized so you don't "pay" for most of the stuff. Your insurance company pays if a doctor sees you. You do get a discount through medicare and medicaid if you qualify.
By the way, I would trade my German health insurance for an HMO anytime, especially if I was very sick.

America is allot more similar to my country than than I thought, I'm Australian. We have national healthcare here. But, most people with enough income choose to purchase insurance. People that can't afford insurance get discounted medication and GP consultations. Its a complex issue I guess.

@ravenbluesparrow I just wanted to add, even if you have insurance you WILL pay a copay, meaning that even if you have expensive insurance you still have to pay to see the doctor. And then they might not cover all of your expenses, depending on what kind of insurance you have they might not cover for treatment at all leaving you help less and trying to sell you house or take out a mortgage. Families can pay $10,000-$15,000/year and can't afford it and still might be denied coverage.
