In order for a cover to be better than the original it has to be completely different (Hendrix's version of Dylan's "All Along the Watchtower" is a good example). This is not better than Queen but I don't think it's meant to be. It's a tribute; Queen, among others, have been cited by Green Day as a musical influence. Bille Joe even has a one line sing-a-long with the crowd at the end, an homage to Freddie's famous trademark. That this crowd knew the response shows Queens lasting fame.
