  • That is TOO good, I can't take it!!!

  • With a single flat pick, Mr. K is getting clean melody, rhythmic chords, bass and a bit of percussion, brushing the strings. I know that Chet became famous for sounding like two guitarists, but this clip of BK sounds like a whole string band!

  • like !

  • What's with that G string?

  • I don't understand how he does this at all, Much less, with that GIANT ring on!

  • ibanez guitar

  • Barney was one of the most inventive jazz guitar players. With that in mind, my guess is that Barny was using that massive ring on hs right hand as a counterbalance to aid in the sweep picking and ultra-fast down-strokes so evident in this video.

  • man that is edge of your seat stuff

  • lui e Joe Pass a parere mio sono inarrivabili!

  • Just can't get enough of this! Youtube is great for finding fantastic performances once hard to find. Thanks for posting this. This just makes me want to shed all the more. Thanks Barney K for your inspiration. RIP.

  • Yeah baby!

  • smokin'

  • porca troia

  • When I was around 14yrs old I saw a Barney Kessel model Gibson at my favorite music store and I thought it was a Cadillac. It made a life long impression on me and I still want one to this day.

  • Great! Try checking out the Joe Pass version, it's as mind blowing as this one. Grtz

  • Barney's swinging here!

  • guitariste exeptionnel

  • what's up with the G string? my guess it that it's roundwound and the rest of the wound strings are flatwound, but don't know if that would make much sense... strange.

  • @polkusin

A lot of Jazz guitar players make the G string roundwound so as to give it a brighter sound. The end result is E-A-D flatwound and G-B-D roundwound. That way the soloing end of the guitar sounds nice and bright and you can still do walking bass lines etc without the string talk of rounds. Hope this answers your Q.

  • @d3m0nknighT thought that was pretty much the point of it :) thanks.

  • @d3m0nknighT

was wondering the same thing myself, thank you. go barney!

  • What command of an instrument with such tasteful playing! Great style and interpretation.

  • incredible completeness and flow... sounds too cool to be true. :)

  • Love the tone from the 70's Ibanez prototype Barney Kessel signature.

Ibanez never put it in production and came with the 2355 a ES-175 copy.

  • Unbelievable, a unique example of... jazz-blues-funky guitar! Amazing

  • WOW!

  • So much spirit.

What a great guitarist; his expression is so concise.

  • Pazzesco. Solo lui poteva suonare gli accordi in questa maniera. GRANDE BARNEY

  • Great... best gitar player

  • incredible

  • Barney getting funky!

  • the riff at :42 is so sick

  • ahhh godddd

  • Look up "Art Tatum Tinys Excercise", I think that riff was inspired of there.

  • Shazam!!!!! Man he smokes!!!!

  • wow, barney kessel is a god of jazz guitar. he makes me want to practice every second of my life until i can sound like him, and at the same time give up on guitar altogether because i know i will never be half as good. wow nice post

  • haha we can't give up! is that recording on youtube? i'd love to check it out

  • @Isaac2c I hear ya man. He makes want to take all my gear to the pawn shop at times.

  • Super,spitze,klasse, genial

  • damn son

  • Barney was a great friend,

Apart from being a guitar genius he was such a nice guy.

    Easy going.

    Intelligent.

    Deep.

    Barry Watson. ( Chromatic Harmonica)

    Westerham, Kent , England.

  • cool...

  • Your friend was probably, arguably, as far as this debutant here is concerned, the most accomplished jazz guitarist to ever have walked the face of the Earth. His right hand should be a national monument.

...really?! Is it not ?? Oh dear!

    Greetings from sunny Lisbon

  • Man... that funky intro was awesome, but what followed is incredible !!!

  • AMAZING! What gutiar is that

  • Absolutely great!

  • The epitome of the barney! Master of this style, only his style.

  • There's definitely a Barney sound, but at the same time he takes such risks that you're never completely certain he's going to make it--but he always makes it. He plays on a tightrope with no net. And never falls. Amazing.

  • well said, it's so excting

  • @NAFTALI2 well said, so exciting

  • @NAFTALI2 Yeah he seems to really play free...I like this in jazz...isn't that what it's about? a totally rehearsed sound is not exciting to me usually....you might like Scotty Andersons dvd "without a Net"...some excerpts on youtube another player who takes chances....

  • @646879 I heard the first bits of one tune and was ready to pop some of his music onto my Great Guitars Playlist, but the videos aren't fully developed. Someone should post some of his work in entirety.

  • genius!

  • whoa, frighteningly good

  • Wonderfull to see! Do you know where to find the whole concert this song is taken from?

  • great find, thanks for posting! Barney sounds like no other.
