  • i like miricioiu's voice best when she's singing an energizing cabaletta. ;)

  • inascoltabile; un orrore ! Vergogna -5

  • Cool upload, cool Nelly

  • This is such a difficult cabaletta. She took a second prepare for the trills and the conductor and orchestra had already left her behind. She keeps up with the pace very well. She could have done much better 20 years ago and it's a testament to her great technique that she can still sing this good at her age.

  • The real problem here is the orchestra, imho. Miricioiu does her best to remain faithful to the belcanto style, and often succeeds (the trills are remarkably well executed, certainly better than by most other Abigailles), recalling the young Verdi's indebtedness to Donizetti--hearing this, it is hard not to think of the last-act scena from Roberto Devereux. Unfortunately, the crashing chords, plodding bass line and reckless tempo pretty much ruin everything.

  • no, this is perfect for her--it's like telling Caballe that she can't sing coloratura or dramatic. people opine on what they have little or knowledge of and can't sing themselves. the voice is perfect and she is one amazing soprano

  • I think she sounded great

  • Certainly does not have the voice to sing this. It is not a soubrette aria.

  • Miricioiu is certainly not a soubrette but a belcanto specialist. This aria certainly is belcanto, however, we are too used to screaming versions rather than singing. Nelly has such a wide repertoire that it is interesting to hear her sing roles one perhaps does not immediately associate with her. xxx, well done Nelly

  • Big fault to let her sing the role... Sorry!

  • bravaaaaaaaaaaaaa

  • I think many judgements here are too harsh. The sound is very poor and only picks up certain elements of the voice. This was a big risk for Nelly who had been seriously ill prior to this performance. It took a lot of courage. I personally prefer a more fragile approach to the unsubtle barnstorming of Gulghina etc. This isn't perfect but it has a human dimension that makes the slightly ridiculous character more believable...but that's only my opinion!

  • excellent conducting !!!!

  • congrats!

  • I agree...really is the worsest Abigaille I never saw.

  • O Dio mio!!!! Ma chi è questa pazza? Glielo hanno insegnato a cantare? Hahahahahaha! E' qualcosa di disgustoso, di orribile, di allucinante! Dio ce ne scampi e liberi! Verdi... perdonala!

  • oooooooooooooooh fedeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeel di teeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeee men fooooooooooooooooorte....

  • She is brilliant. Love her.

  • This so brutally sung its painful to listen to. (And I rarely diss any singer for trying)

She's all over the place, flat, sloppy, thin of voice, incorrect embellishments...it just doesn't end. I liked Miss Miriciou, so this is very disappointing.

    The finest Abigailles in order without discussion;

    1) Callas Naples

    2) Soulitis studio

    3) Dimitrova Verona

    Next of class

    Deutekom

    Bumbry

Unfortunately Miss Sass did not try the role on for size.

  • Well, I thought Nelly did an excellent job, but then beauty is always in the ear of the beholder.

Did anyone ever hear Callas live? She sounds so bad on recordings (to me, anyway), I wonder if she sounded better in the theater.

  • "My favourite Abigailles" were/are 1., Cristina Deutekom; 2., Ghena Dimitrova; 3., Elena Souliotis; 4., Maria Guleghina.

(I don´t like Nelly Miricioiu in THIS role, sorry!)

  • Her coloratura is nice. I love Guleghina, but she's sloppy. At her best, Dimitrova owned this role, and the Callas 1949 performance on disc is unparalleled.

  • There is not much left of the "original Miricioiu-voice"! She sounds horrible!!! :-(

  • Yeah, but she's 55 in this video. I personally can forgive her. Not everyone preserves the voice like Leontyne did.

  • abigaielle is a wonderful role.very few can rise to the challenge of it and i mean the spirit of it rather than beckmessering over the notes. nelli is wrong for the part but its well prepared. only the wonderful elena suleotis had the temperament for this audacious role. shame chi chi la rue doesn't have the voice for it.

  • I think the timbre of her voice is stunning. Reminds me alot of Callas but without the wobble on the top. Yes, perhaps a little on the light side for this role and the run down not perfect but what an exciting sound she makes and wonderful style.

  • I agree. Very well done for a relatively light soprano with a beautiful bel canto style.

  • She is very good, my favorite soprano.

  • Disgraceful!!!

  • She's hideous in this. Doesn't have the top, nor the bottom (notice she doesn't go all the way down the way it's written). Dimitrova is the only one you could sing this. Does anyone think Sutherland could have sung this???

  • Dimitrova had surely dramatic potential in this but sort of shouted through the party. As did Scotto. Callas loved to skip this caballetta because of problems.

The one soprano that could really sing it was Cristina Deutekom. There is a good live recording of hers in this role.

  • "Callas loved to skip this cabaletta (one l) because of problems".... don't be so ridiculous! Listen properly!

  • Sorry for the extra L. Must have been thinking of Caballé.

But Callas indeed often skipped the cabaletta live on stage. Sorry for the ones who thinks every thing of her was sacred.....

  • Nobody here is sacred. Callas sang the entire role only once, in 1949. Have a listen if you think she had any problem with the cabaletta, mate. She recorded the whole scene for EMI in 1958. Apart from that she only sang the "Anch'io dischiuso un giorno" in concert, omitting the cabaletta, which was common practice at the time. For example how many baritones sang "No, non udrai rimproveri" those days?

  • what do you mean she doesn't go all the way down?? all the notes are there - of course this is note suited for her voice, but all the notes ARE there.

  • Listen again. At 2:48 she takes it an octave up instead of going down where we can't hear her. She's hideous.

  • the second part of the aria (when sung) is always sung with ornamentations that the singer sees fit (see also Guleghina). I though you were refering to the 2 octave descent at 2:02 - 2:07. Anyway, you have to see Nelly live to really appreciate her. She doesn't have a very big voice, she sings in her particular way, but she's very committed. I saw her in Lecouvreur - very moving. And also, her belcanto repertoir is fabulous - see Devereux, Borgia, Stuarda.

  • Thanks for the recommendations, I'll listen with an "open mind." I've been criticized for being too mean with my comments: it's just that I was SUCH a Sutherland fan throughout her career that it's hard to listen to anyone else. Thanks again.

  • no didnt have the lower notes let alone the temperament. there are very few who can do this role. its too interesting.

  • Not good at all. It seems no one can actually sing this cabaletta. Even when Dimitrova had a good day it was still a bit nervewrecking to listen to. They should let Damrau sing it accompanied by a piano or something.

  • The orchestra is overpowering her. I still don't believe that she is a dramatic coloratura. Her voice is much too light and thin. Lyric coloratura at best.

  • i like her, but not in this role, the orchestra is too dominant! Guleghina is better in this role

  • so good to hear this sung like a dramatic coloratura and not like a dramatic in overdrive! Brava Nelly!

  • there's shades of caballe in her voice... or is it just me?

  • I don't hear that at all - Caballe's voice was much more substantial, beautiful and evenly produced. Miricioiu is not in the same league.

  • Cannot hold a candle to the great Dimitrova in this bit. Voice is much too light!

  • ABSOLUTELY RIGHT !!

  • terrible! there is nothing of the character of Abigaille in this woman's singing and interpretation. Also she is out of tune and flat A LOT!!!The middle voice has no porjection nor richness needed for the role. High notes wooble a bit. Sorry!

  • She is very good but cannot be compared to the great Dimitrova in this role.

  • Totally Agree

  • Not the right voice for this!

She is Romanian..I am romanian too. we are practically brothers :P so I can understand almost everything you say :)

    ciao.

  • Always a joy to hear and "see" (a bit from a distance this time...) my favorite soprano. Thanks!
