The Wicked witch! Awesome!—How much longer after wizard of Oz was this? Just posted a Maxwell House Coffee coupon video on our channel, interesting that she was the spokesperson for them
@askforadeal - This was nearly 40 years later, but Hamilton actually did commercials for MH between 1974 and 1979, as I recall...in fact, her very first one is posted elsewhere on YT.
I remember these tv ads as a kid; and could not believe that Cora...this sweet old lady in the Vermont General Store for Maxwell House was the same Wicked Witch of the West from OZ. Upon reaching the age of learning & college; I read about Ms. Hamilton and the rest of our friends from the 1939 OZ pic. Her ashes were scattered upon Cape Island, Maine; Not a bad place to be, imo. A legendary actress of immortality; sterling lady as sound as a dollar. Peace to you & beyond.
@jaytlr9 Thank you for the pleasant return of thoughts. Margaret was a one of a kind gem, imo. By the way...blooper alert for this ad for Maxwell House. The lady Ms H portrays is Cora...at about 11 seconds into it, if I'm not mistaken, Percy refers to her character Cora as Clara! *grin* "Oh Clara..." I played it six times or better, poor Percy flubbed his line I think. Still a wonderful ad from the those years, with a great lady. Peace and joy to you, Jay.
Her son comes to Wamego, KS from time to time to speak at the Wizard of Oz museum and have lunch with the visitors. Super nice guy, and he tells great stories about his mama! He looks like her, too.
Wouldn't it have been cool to see Margaret Hamilton of "Maxwell House" duke it out with Joe DiMaggio of "Mr Coffee" fame? Instead of sexy models wrestling in mud...how about "Joltin Joe" and the Wicked Witch of the West??? That I would PAY to see! :-)
I heard she spilled a cup of maxwell house on the set and melted in front of the entire crew. All that was left was her housedress, sweater, and her broom of course!
I was named after my father's elderly spinster aunt, Cora. I later appreciated it's uniqueness, but never associated my name with a pretty young girl. Wouldn't you know, the coffee ad comes out, and the Wicked Witch is named Cora. : ( On the other hand, I love Margaret Hamilton. What a terrific character actor she was.
I remember the original run of these commercials, when she played Cora in the Maxwell ads. Her little country store had three rows stocked with Maxwell House Coffee. I guess the farmers in that town got a lot done when they weren't urinating.
I remember these commercials but I never realized I was watching the wicked witch of the West, the woman that terrified tens of millions of us boomers. If you listen to her interviewed on the blu ray version of The Wizard Of Oz she was really a nice person with great sense of humor.
@fredzepp1 - She def was...in fact, Judy Garland recalled years later that she had a hard time acting scared during filming b/c she was such a warm, friendly person off-camera.
Hamilton was a "Born-Again Christian" in real life. That was one of her motivations, for appearing on Mr. Roger's Neighborhood; to explain her character. Rogers was a Christian preacher in real life.
@kkrichie Lol, I know right? I think she actually is saying prissy or something though. It's weird though; I thought she said that too when I first saw it. I broke out laughing!
Fun fact, Teddy Roosevelt drank a gallon of Maxwell House coffee every day.

She's not the type of nanny or grandmother children will love. Her sharp wits and strict temper and attitude are too much.
