Yes. There is a grass strip on the southwest corner of the island. I'd estimate it to be 1500-2000 feet long...but your should double-check that (I flew helos in there, so I never researched how long it was. Also...you'll want to check with Puerto Rico Dept of Natural Resources first. They regulate visitors. You need a permit ahead of time.
Okay. I went to Puerto Rico in August, but it was too windy to fly at all. I hate how there are only 2 places on the island that will let me rent a plane (Isla Grande and Arecibo). Also, is there some website or email that I need to send to the Dept of Natural Resources?
Is the name of that boat the Orca II? While I was flying helicopters in Puerto Rico, I also chartered your uncle's boat, I think, for 2 trips. Is he based out of Boqueron? Tell me his name and I'll know for sure!
Wow...I'm impressed you know it's a Dolphin from just the interior shots. I am a Coast Guard pilot. I was lucky enought to fly the HH65 for about 11 years. From '99 to '01, I was assigned to the Coast Guard Air Station in Aguadilla, Puerto Rico. We flew many sorties into the Mona Pass, partly to look out for migrants who were looking to enter Puerto Rico from the Dominican Republic. Hope you get to hop aboard a Eurocopter aircraft one day...if not the 365, then maybe the A-Star.
A am seriously jealous...I work around the Dauphins up here in Maryland...as a pilot I see them from time to time and as a cop I see em up and close...was the flight levers that clued me in though...The goal is to build up the r-22 and Jetranger time to get a job flying a dauphin or something big after I retire in 10 years from law enforcement...!
Interesting. We may have crossed paths before. I just finished a 5 year tour at the Coast Gaurd Air Station in Atlantic City. During my final 2 years there, we intensified flights through the Baltimore-Washington area a lot. You sound like you might be MSP? Those levers you refer to are gone, now that the Coast Guard Dolphin has been upgraded to full FADEC (a computer meters the fuel now).
We may have some point in the air or ground...I actually work for the county police in Baltimore..My examiner for my private and subsequent instrument ratings is also the pilot for MSP...on trooper 1 out of Martins State..So is that why I would see you guys flying down I-95 from Balto yo Washington? I live right next to 95 and I know its like heli route 12 or something?...Thats neat you were up there in Atlantic City
You'd see a lot of Coast Guard 65's coming down I-95 (yes, it's route 12) because they often take that route to get into Reagan National. In September of 2006, the Coast Guard took over (from CBP) the ADIZ intercept mission for relatively slow moving, general aviation traffic. Pilots stand duty down there for a spell, then go back to Atlantic City. Major maintenance is still done in ACY, hence all the shuttling back and forth.
Is there any way for a private pilot like me to fly a Cessna 172 from Mayaguez to Mona?

"Orca" is the other guy that takes people there. My uncles's boat is the "Torpedo" from Puerto Real (next to Boqueron bay).
