The speculation is why we have high prices. Even drilling more oil in Alaska would only lower the price by a few cents, and at not for at least a decade.
The supply and demand of oil isn't much different than what it was four years ago. We need to regulate the speculation market (yes, more government) to bring prices down to normal.
As it is, OPEC nations can bid higher and higher, artificially inflating the speculation market, and therefore prices.

Even if the government did ok drilling in ANWR, it wouldn't effect prices for decades and demand is so high it won't relieve prices by more than a few cents. It's not worth it. We'll get more out of investing in alternate fuels, cold fusion research, etc.

Ok my bad kashbme, we're on the same page here. I used to have a company van and boy it was great when "they" paid the fuel bill. I was driving from Dayton to Cincinnati every day for two years in my own vehicle and it was costing me a "weeks pay" to drive that every month...and that was a year ago!
I'm willing to put 10 or 12 derricks in my backyard here. I'd be a "gozillion aire".

For electricity, Fucking dirt-poor dirt farmers in rural communities were running large inefficient generators 24 hours a day, 365 days a year.
Iraq buys from its neighbors or uses its own supply, either way its roughly the equivalent of 25 cents a liter for the local. These were people that couldnt afford antibiotics for their children, but could burn gas 24-7/365

I have worked for one and presently work for the other. There are alot of similiarities between the two. I believe you are the one who is not familiar with both structures. The speculation is why we have high prices. Even drilling more oil in Alaska would only lower the price by a few cents, and at not for at least a decade.
The supply and demand of oil isn't much different than what it was four years ago. We need to regulate the speculation market (yes, more government) to bring prices down to normal.
As it is, OPEC nations can bid higher and higher, artificially inflating the speculation market, and therefore prices.

you're kidding right? demand has risen exponentially since China and India have finally begun switching from bikes and scooters to cars. look at the cost of iron ore, a commodity not open to speculative purchasing. it's risen nearly as fast as oil. no one with any real understanding of the problem blames speculators. people just want to believe prices will go back down. they won't. not any significant amount anyway, and not for long.

there are 5 ways we can bring down oil prices. 1. CARPOOL. if you get 5 folks to a car, usually driven by 1, you get 4 less cars on our highways. 2. you get the govt. to spend money on MASS TRANSIT. if you make public transportation affordable, attractive, and comfortable, many people would give up their cars. 3. get the govt. to EXPAND AMTRAK to 48 states and call it the national rail system.

I think it's ridiculous that people think we can just waltz up there and pull all 75 billion barrels out at once. Even if the government did ok drilling in ANWR, it wouldn't effect prices for decades and demand is so high it won't relieve prices by more than a few cents. It's not worth it. We'll get more out of investing in alternate fuels, cold fusion research, etc.

America has 3%, thats THREE PERCENT, of the world Oil supply within its borders. America USES 25% thats 1/4, ONE QUARTER, of the yearly supply of Oil for the world. Drilling is not the solution, innovation is. If a developing nation like Brazil can become energy independent through innovation and alternative fuels, then the GREATEST NATION ON EARTH can do the same. Republicans just want to make more gas.
