Hehe--Pava once said, when questioned about his appetite for women, that "sex was always good for you whether before or after a performance makes no difference, or even during the performance on the only table on the stage!"---hummmmm--wonder where he got THAT idea!---lol
@jfichter69 All opera singers sing without microphones in opera theaters over the orchestra, so I wouldn't worry about it; Wagnerian dramatic voices are even stronger. Re:your question - this is a movie based on opera Rigoletto by Verdi, director is Jean-Pierre Ponelle and amazon has a DVD. Also, a new movie based on this opera is free on PBS GP web page- google "PBS Great Performances Rigoletto from Mantua watch" (not as good vocally as this one, but still beautiful).
my favorite Il Duca aria after "Questa O Quella", "La donna e mobile" and "Possente amor mi chiama"
btw, I live in Las Vegas, Nevada and we have a LOAD of "Bella figlia dell'amore" out here. I always though a casino would be a great staging of Rigoletto with the Duke as the owner, Rigoletto as the house comic, Count Ceprano as a pit boss, Countess Ceprano as his cocktail waitress wife and Sparafucile as a local Mafia hit man.

such a wonderful experience after going through so many classical pieces still being able to come across a long missing one (sorry i never touched on rigoletto before) like this impressive quartet out of verdi's unimaginable genius. i guess this is even rare among all verdi's works, which also reminds me of the statement in the movie 'Amadeus' that it is only possible through music to have multiple human voices in complete harmony. pavarotti is just stunning, as well as the soprano behind.
what sound touches our hearts more than our voices, eventhough I know NOT what they sing---other musical sounds that pleases our ears because they are its replica and/or its extension.

A, maravilloso...
My favorite song from Rigoletto. I saw it live. I wish I could have seen Pavarotti, but alas, he died when I was seven :( Much before I got into singing Opera. I can't help but sing along!!! It's so B.E.A.U.T.I.F.U.L.!!! I wish men actually sang women love songs to woo us... I would be his right then and there XD

Rigoletta was the first opera i ever saw, I thought it would be a bit of a "curates egg" for me but I was entranced throughout. I've seen quite a few since but this one always remains special for having been the little beauty that opened a new world to me. Cracking stuff.
this is how it starts: Bella figlia dell'amore, Schiavo son dei vezzi tuoi; Con un detto, un detto, sol tu puoi Le mie pene, le mie pene, consolar. Vieni e senti del mio core Il frequente palpitar. (Fairest daughter of love, I am a slave to your charms; with but a single word you could relieve my every pain. Come, touch my bosom and feel how my heart is racing.)
@EpicUltraKingSmizzy It's not going to ruin it, believe me, you'd appreciate the nuances of expression more. Google for "Rigoletto synopsis", the very first hit would tell you the plot of the opera. You can also google for "Rigoletto libretto English" - this can give you all the words of the full opera translated ("libretto" means complete text of opera) and scroll down to "Quartet", but just the synopsis is enough.
@jfichter69 There is no such thing as "operatic metal bands". Opera and metal are two different genres; also different singing technique. Opera requires both glorious voice and years of training and hard work, and even then it's very difficult to succeed because the competition is tough. All the so-called "operatic" pop/metal/popera performers would never be able to even get a chorus job in opera, they'll never even be heard in an opera house where there are no microphones.

@MsZoologist1 duke of mantua is trying to get laid by the innkeeper/assassin's sister, rigolleto's doughter gilda watches in horror, as rigoletto explains to her that being said is pointless. spoiler alert, the assasin kills her instead of the duke of mantua

OMG this was phenomenal Pavarotti at his BEST! Verdi was the master for me when ti comes to opera, but where in hell is Gruberova's high E-flat at the end? So anti-climactic for her to take it down...and she has the note in her range!
@htshoward -- The end of this quartet as written has no high note at the end of this quartet, and if one were actually to take the ending an octave up, I don't believe it wouldn't be an E flat but a D that would be sung. In truth the quartet is more effective as written, since it is not a flashy piece, but a dramatic quartet weaving four story lines together brilliantly.
@htshoward I confess, I was. It gets a bit "heavy" around these You Tube opera scenes so I got silly on everyone. I did appreciate your comments, however. Would love to hear you sing. Thanks folks.

@sopranosd Thank you. I will sleep better tonight.

@htshoward OK, now you're just being silly.

@htshoward I confess, I was. It gets a bit "heavy" around these You Tube opera scenes so I got silly on everyone. I did appreciate your comments, however. Would love to hear you sing. Thanks folks.

@htshoward
This is as originally written - no high note. Gruberova does not need to show off... she is wonderful in any part of her astonishing range.

@ajbweiner I was not suggesting she needed to show off. Of course she is astonishing. I was stated a personal preference.
