Sgt Pepper is a great album. Very innovative and out there. But Pet Sounds is all of that PLUS we can identify with it. It goes right to the heart and that is why it's the greatest album of all time.

@zeenasi Speaking of Carl, I plan to visit his grave site which is nestled away in a small cemetery near UCLA. A very spiritual person with a sweet voice.
@mikea731 Absolutely. Listen to Panda Bear's album "Person Pitch". The resemblance is even greater. I think that's kind of the point to a certain extent.
I love this album. The first concept album of the sixties where the sum of the tracks form a greater whole. Beautiful Brian Wilson innovative melodies and he also had such a great voice back then. What a treasure - heck we were spoiled in the 60's. What has happened to innovative melodic music. It seems that the likes of the B. Boys and the Beatles will remain the pinnacle of pop music.I love to see how many of today's young are rejecting the crap that passes for music and are becoming fans.
@Zooney1 What do you mean what happened? People are more interested in other musical qualities than melody. Why is that a bad thing? Rhythm in pop music has never been more complex. I don't really like pop music that much anyways, but there is great music from all eras of pop if you just open your ears and mind.
I think bands have it tough these days due to the quality of the music from previous eras. Pete Townsend often makes this remark. The territory has been fully staked out. Sure rhythms may be more complex - its great what computers and overdubbing can do but it is funny how a computer hasn't written a good tune or song.
@Zooney1 Yes, "bands" have a hard time because you are correct, the quality from the past is so great....but that's even more incentive for the musicians to travel down different roads and not live in the past! When has a computer written a tune or song? PEOPLE write songs and computers are just tools. You sound like someone who would say "nobody writes as good as mozart anymore so new classical suffers" but the truth is nobody chooses to write like him because that's not "our" music. CONT..
@Zooney1 "its great what computers and overdubbing can do but it is funny how a computer hasn't written a good tune or song." What are you trying to say? SOOOO much great music has been written on computers, both classical and pop. I actually take offense to that since it is the most simple minded and misleading thing I've heard in a while. But if u are just saying that computers don't write music, then that's just an absurd statement, like saying "No pencil have ever written a great tune".
What I am saying is that despite all the technical advances in recording equipment and technology the basic beauty and crux of a song - the melody, harmonies and the lyrics are still the product of creative individuals and that computers themselves can not match a talented individual at the art of song writing. This contrasts for instance to a different field such as the game of chess where computers can beat humans.
@Zooney1 Despite your clarification you still don't see my main point, which is that lots of new music isn't trying to be be harmonically or melodically interesting...and that's okay! Why is harmony and melody any better of a musical element than rhythm, texture, motifs, etc.? You have a bias for the popular music that you grew up with. Not to mention, you can always find lyrical content of high quality, you just choose not to see it and/or your tastes cloud your judgment.
I guess for me rhythm, texture etc are not as central to music as melody, harmony and chord progression. I find most modern pop music utterly tedious due to the trite melody/harmony content. Sure rhythms can be complex and that can be mildly interesting but is is usually done with computers so to me it sounds boring and lacks soul. Now in contrast Stuart Copeland and the Police I think was innovative and refreshing and heavily rhythm based. Crisp, open - wonderful stuff.
@Zooney1 "I guess for me rhythm, texture etc are not as central to music as melody, harmony and chord progression." That's all fine and good and I see where you're coming from. Lots of new pop music tries to be melodic and harmonic but it just sounds trite, contrived, and shallow. The rhythms in them are only superficial. Maye try listening to Aphex Twin, Buke and Gass, or MF Doom.
@menoziinrevoltado How about you actually start listing reasons why you think this instead of just stating your opinions with no reasons behind them? In fact, why do you keep on watching and commenting on Pet Sounds videos is you don't like it?
@DoGeeseSeeGod24 I NEVER SAID I DIDN'T LIKE IT. ARE YOU STUPID? ARE YOU RETARDED? ARE YOU MENTALLY ILL? WHERE DID YOU READ THAT? They are different. Not better, not worse. That's all, I'm not going to argue. You know you will still compare them. Even if I give you five good reasons not to do it. You are just a moron who likes to be an idiot. Comparing them is the same as comparing: Street Fighter 1 x Mortal Kombat 2 Mortal Kombat 2 x Street Fighter 3 Different... Comparisons are senseless.
@menoziinrevoltado Different albums, but a lot of that has to do with the fact that The Beach Boys were not as popular world wide as The Beatles. I think it is about even. There are throw away songs on Sgt. Pepper's too (Good Morning, Good Morning) and the brilliant songs from each album are about evenly matched.
well, you shouldn't say it like that, all the early hits are also huge songs, and there's much more going on in the backing track and harmonie section even on the early hits, and the second side of summer days and summer nights is i think on the level of pet sounds, especially califronia girls is one of my top 3 beach boys songs, and the other boys also made some great music, like disney girls by bruce or forever by dennis, i really deeply love that melody on forever.

They're both fantastic albums. The complexity of Pet Sounds from a musical point of view makes it a pioneering album, but Sgt. Peppers was a recording revolution. It paved the way for recording. It re-wrote the rulebook. I personally don't think it was their best, but Pet Sounds was the definitive Beach Boys album. It picked up where the Beatles left off, a collection of beautiful music as opposed to Sgt. Peppers which was really a 'concept' album.
there is no comparison between the two albums... sgt peppers is trippy 'shit' written to satisfy the up and coming culture of the day, Pet Sounds is honest, real, beautiful music.
Bullshit. George Martin never said that SPLHCB wasn't near Pet Sounds - he didn't even say that Pet Sounds was better - but he did say that Sgt. Pepper's was an attempt to create a album as good as Pet Sounds. And they certainly did.
Oh, sorry that's what I meant, I guess I typed it wrong. Well anyway one is not better then the other I have both and I think they're both amazing albums
That's probably my favorite one from Pet Sounds. I love the chord sequence (maj7 chords!), the key change. The solo guitar. For me this song is a good example of BB' transformation. There's that sneering Mike's voice, the same one with which he sang all those ditties, like Fun Fun Fun, but here he sings about the whole different things. The words are serious, introspective. Kind of like that little fun-loving surfer dude from their songs is getting adult and facing difficulties of life
If you want to, you can go check out "Behind The Sounds" on this song. It's part of a series of Pet Sounds songs that go behind the making of the Pet Sounds songs.
In some weird sort of way, I like the album cover. It has been called "cliche" even in the Pet Sounds Session box set, but I always thought it was a really interesting album cover. It is something I would gladly put on my wall.
Yeah it's the Beatles Sgt Pepper and how influenced they were by this cd that got me into listening to it. I guess I underestimated the Beach Boys as just surfing pop tunes. This cd really shows that they are more than that. Brian Wilson is the creative one of the group.
Lots of people thought that when i saw this on best album lists at like #2 or 3 i was shocked and when i heard this album it is a big part of my musical life just like Paul
yeh your right the cover isnt the best but the music alone itself it just outstanding and beautiful everything of the album is perfect yes this album is one of the best 1960's albums of all time.and it really inspired paul mcartney of the beatles
I'm not going to thumb you down or dis you on that claim. However, I think it's one of their best album covers. I don't know how to describe it. It's still life and to me I see the picture as a interpretation at the feeling of the album.
I swear to god this entire album just speaks so deeply to me. From the music, to the lyrics, this album is who I am. This album is me. Brian Wilson has taken what I feel inside my own head and heart and put into musical form.
someone told me they didnt like the beach boys because they found brians voice to be "cloying"...
i looked it up in the dictionary... basically cloying means: to be made sickening by too much of something sweet or originally endearing...
I couldnt agree more brians voice is cloying and i LOVE IT! his voice was unbelievably good to the nth degree back then... how could it not be "cloying" ?
THere is a group of videos called behind the scenes, brian wilson produces pet sounds lp. In many of these songs, Brian recorded two basses: Electric Fender bass, and a stand-up, acoustic bass. Brian also knew exactly how to place the mike for these acoustic instruments, for the rich tone. I agree, the bass on Pet SOunds, is awesome.
Pet Sounds is one of my favorite (top 3) albums of all time... There is NO filler whatsoever!! That is very rare for albums of any era or genre, especially nowadays.
Unfortunately, if I had to choose a 'least favorite' track on the album I'd have to say it's this one...
"That's Not Me" is a quality song IMO but just isn't quite up to par with the others. This is more so because of just how good the other tracks are, not because I'm hating on Mike Love.
Yes, I completely don't get how such an amazing album...could have that song on it. Sloop John B just doesn't fit in tone or quality. I love That's Not Me though.
This was out of all the music that has been recorded in rock/pop history the #1 Album. Period!!! The recording tech. that was used and the layering of sound was light years ahead of itself. Every professional rock band on the planet knows this even if the public does not. When you have someone like Paul McCartney saying this is his and will always be his favorite........
Pappa, they did not know who there really were to us. It is sad when we tend to opt for the easiest way; the way of least resistance guided by mere impulse or a majority, or "mainstream".
Sometimes people have us hold something and suddenly out of no where someone takes a picture, and we had done it. We were the guilty party and face a set of another Joe's circumstances no our own.
The best of ourselves is being true, sadly those who never accepted 'purity' actually reject themselves.
Greatest album of all time album. I always said if it wasn't for 1966's Pet Sounds from The Beach Boys, there would of been no Sergeant Pepper's album from The Beatles.
@ntc12345 true! The Beatles and the Beach Boys were a rivalry so the Beatles wanted to top this and they definitely accomplished that. This is the best boys album for sure. Sgt. Pepper's is definitely the best beatles album (along with Rubber Soul) You know the two groups had HUGE respect for each other.
I wouldn't say that, I mean Pepper is alright, but if any Beatles comes close to this, it's Revolver or Rubber Soul...actually Pepper, amazing as it is, is not as awesome as the other later Beatles work.
Plus, Day in the Life being an amazing song and me also being a huge fan of Within You Without You, I'd rather here Wouldn't it be Nice and God Only Knows.
Whatever though, it's like comparing one diamond to another.
@ntc12345 That is George Martin and Paul McCartney's comment from back then. Why don't you use your own quotes, or give credit to the person who made this one?
Brian is truly thIe best.I cant say there is a song he made that i did not like. There would be a big space in my heart if there were no Beach Boys music.Peace,Desiree

It is something I would gladly put on my wall.

my 2nd fave album. 1st is Sgt. Pepper, but without this there would be no Sgt. Pepper so thanks!!
ishraq7 2 years ago 3

Brian Wilson has taken what I feel inside my own head and heart and put into musical form.

iPL2001 2 years ago 4
He needed Mike to write the ending of "Wouldn't It Be Nice".

Great sounds on this album but has to be one of the worst photo album covers of all time. Looks like a 4 h promo for hitler youth.

Brian Wilson was so far ahead of his time in the mid-'60's that the music industry still has not caught up.
RTSiciliano 2 years ago 3
Add that to Bob Dylan, The Beatles, Pink Floyd, The Velvet Underground and Jimi Hendrix.
All great pioneers in the world of music.

Don't forget other genre ground breakers, Johnny Cash, Simon & Garfunkel, Led Zeppelin, etc. The 60s paved the way for great music.

i dunno maybe
i mean it can be, but i dont think this song reflects cloyness
hahaha i totally agree, his voice is the shit
wish i'da been blessed with one like that
Toro6559 2 years ago 2
someone told me they didnt like the beach boys because they found brians voice to be "cloying"...
i looked it up in the dictionary... basically cloying means: to be made sickening by too much of something sweet or originally endearing...
I couldnt agree more brians voice is cloying and i LOVE IT! his voice was unbelievably good to the nth degree back then... how could it not be "cloying" ?
how could anyone not LOVE the Beach Boys... ?
they are still the BEST!

This is more so because of just how good the other tracks are, not because I'm hating on Mike Love.
bobshenix 3 years ago
My least favorite on the album is Sloop John B
theSuperMetroid 3 years ago 2
Yes, I completely don't get how such an amazing album...could have that song on it. Sloop John B just doesn't fit in tone or quality. I love That's Not Me though.
jadebrush 3 years ago
I love That's Not Me too. Sloop is a good song too, but it just dosent fit in with these other songs.

Wow, this is such an amazing track

Pappa, they did not know who there really were to us. It is sad when we tend to opt for the easiest way; the way of least resistance guided by mere impulse or a majority, or "mainstream".
Sometimes people have us hold something and suddenly out of no where someone takes a picture, and we had done it. We were the guilty party and face a set of another Joe's circumstances no our own.
The best of ourselves is being true, sadly those who never accepted 'purity' actually reject themselves.

Greatest album of all time album. I always said if it wasn't for 1966's Pet Sounds from The Beach Boys, there would of been no Sergeant Pepper's album from The Beatles.
ntc12345 3 years ago 14
@ntc12345 true! The Beatles and the Beach Boys were a rivalry so the Beatles wanted to top this and they definitely accomplished that. This is the best boys album for sure. Sgt. Pepper's is definitely the best beatles album (along with Rubber Soul) You know the two groups had HUGE respect for each other.
dragonsflame35 1 year ago
@dragonsflame35
Whatever though, it's like comparing one diamond to another.
mrfudgeyhead 1 year ago
@ntc12345 That is George Martin and Paul McCartney's comment from back then. Why don't you use your own quotes, or give credit to the person who made this one?
