Actually the lyrics are hardly appropriate as a national "Volkslied". This is very similar to socialist party songs at the times they were struggling to gat a foothold ("international"). My grandfather was a English businessman during 1930's he visited Nazi Germany in the 30's before the war, he said all the foreigners were treated well and you could have free spech and voice your opinion the German people were very nice and polite. But when he visited Russia during the Stalin times all the foreigners were being watched by the Police and u could not go to certain places or say certain things.

@AlexSDU Yes, the lyrics were originally written by Horst Wessel. He was an SA activist who was assassinated before the war. The song, with a few changes to lyrics, was declared a national symbol and the "National Anthem" of the Reich. There is at least one known example of a person being tried and hanged for failing to stand at attention and give the Nazi salute whilst it was being played.

@hellcatz88 I think you're wrong.. the SA was becoming to big (up to 4million 'soldiers') and to powerful.. thats the main reason the SA was diminished in its numbers and replaced by the far more superior ss. @punaboy12 .. the sa wasn't elite, it was a bunch of drunk and overly aggresive guys . the ss were the elite ones, you had the be a specific age (somewhere between 21-25 I believe) and you had to be in good condition.

Röhm (leader of SA) was angry at hitler because there still wasn't a socialistic revolution and rohm spoke about how they could continue without hitler (this was supposedly said in one of rohms angry rants) but Viktor Lutze told Hitler about all of this. Himmler and Goring also sided with Lutze against the SA and this was enough for Hitler to plan the well-known 'night of the long knives'.
