  • what's that name of song you are playing at the beginning?

  • @mefju1212 Shoot To Thril by AC/DC

  • If you want a used one, the faded ones go for about 500, while the standard goes for about 700, so it's not that much of a difference

  • thanks for the comparison both sound great. standard looks more appealing to me but not worth the price increase.

  • I liked the trapezoid inlays, otherwise the faded is awesome.

  • @olegsus83

    could be

  • Very useful comparison.

The sound is like 99% the same but it's apparent - even with YouTube lossy sound - that the 498T has a bit less body and a bit more edge

  • How long have u had this guitar for ive always wanted to buy this been playing for about 2 and a half years now

  • @TheDeadKeepRising

Had it a little while now. Its a nice guitar.

  • hell yeah gone shootin riff at 3:00. Awsome

  • If you can find one,The SG special with the gloss nitro finish is the bargain sleeper..love your comparo, both guitars are very nice..if someone did a blind listening test, they probably would be lucky to notice...though in my experience the 498 sounds brighter in person.. i love the 490's though; they are so medium...

  • Which is better in general? a comparrison would be nice if anyone could find one :) cheers

  • @Ollyprvb

I guess whichever one you like better. Why don't you go to a guitar center or music store and compare them? There's a concept.

  • Is there any difference in body construction that affects the weight of these two? I heard the Special is very light. I don't know if it's light by itself or in comparison to other models, possibly the Standard.

Also it would be a related question: do you notice the neck dive problem with any or both of these? Epi SG are notorious for that.

  • @VinniePaah

Differentgrade/quality of wood.all guitars can vary in weight. Its normal as no wood is same as next.Inever have an issue with neck dive but I suppose it could be present in any guitar or sg guitar

  • I have a random question!!!! And need help!! What will be the best a gibson sg or a LTD EC 1000. although I Love the sg but I would have to sell my DEAN Razorback ro buy ether of em?

  • @kutabare01 Sorry,you got me on that one.I don't know what a LTD EC 1000 is

  • @rlta04 if your playing metal get the ltd

  • @someone0209

    whatever that is

  • @kutabare01 The ESP LTD Ec-1000 like the eclipse from ESP But the cheaper model !

  • @kutabare01 woowoowow are you kidding me!!!! i want a Gibson sg or a LTD EC-1000 too!!!!!!! i have a den but not a razorback!!!!!!

  • another good thing about the faded is theres less maintenance with the paint

  • @LIVE2ROCK2011 What?!

  • not much difference except the price eh?

  • y yo con una misera guitarra vorson mimimij T.T :D

  • Thanks for posting. Are they both stable, like do they stay in tune equally well?

  • Ich denke, die SG Standard hat den besten Ton.

  • sg standard is sharper

  • Hey rita.. just wondering...what convinced you to by a red SG standard and a red SG special? not hating i love collecting gear but.. seems redundant?

  • @BMXplease11

Whats odd is why someone would care what guitars someone they do not know buys and why.I purchased the faded due to money, didn;t have alot to spend.i wanted the Standard but didn't have to money at the time. When I did come into some extra money I purchased the standard which I always wanted.I looked into trading in the faded at the time but the guitar store would give me next to nothing for it,not enough to bother trading it in,so I kept it.Any other purchases need an explanation?

  • @rlta04 BMXplease11 asked you a question in a very polite way and you would reply like that? learn some respect.

  • @sadbutsandman91 BMXplease11 stated that my guitars "I PURCHASE IS REDUNDANT" Someone telling me what I own is redundant is disrespectful. Anyone telling anyone else what is redundant for them to own is respectful. Its nobodys business about what guitars someone else owns and what colors they are or why they own them. Honestly,SOME people are either extremely stupid orjust flat out ignorant.

Worry about what you own and what color guitars your are,not mine

  • @rlta04 Alright. if you want to have that kind of personality go ahead. its not effecting me. just you.

  • @sadbutsandman91

its not affecting me at all.You may be if you keep talking crap, but that be the case ,I'll just block you like the other trolls on you tube

  • @rlta04 go right ahead, i dont care for this channel anyways. it doesnt interest me in the least bit.

  • @sadbutsandman91

    right on-done

  • @rlta04 That tough guy style makes you seem SO COOL! I salute you for showing a viewer of yours so much disrespect! He asked a normal question politely and you got pissed at him. Way to go! Now go make some friends.

    (Obv. I'm sarcastic)

  • @sadbutsandman91 then dont go away mad just go away.Im buying that axe and ill be the happiest fr around

  • The Special sounds clearly a bit muddier than the Standard

  • is the sg standard lighter or is the sg special faded lighter?

  • @kgfenderbender

    Lighter as in weight?

If you mean weight, each guitar can vary depending upon the piece/s of wood used and tree taken from.In my case the standard is much heavier than the faded ,by quite a bit. If you meant shade as in color, the faded is much lighter cherry stain

  • @rlta04 i meant weight!!! but thanks for the extra information! :D

  • @rlta04 @rlta04 i meant weight!!! but thanks for the extra information! :D

  • @rlta04 i meant weight but thnx for the extra info!! ;)

  • @rlta04 ive got the faded too, ive played the standards at various guitar shops and found most of the standards are a couple pounds heavier than the faded. are the dimensions (body/neck thickness, etc) the same? i haven't ever held a faded and standard side by side...

also, this vid has been extremely helpful to me. ive been thinking of putting 498s into my faded, then putting the 490s into my chinese epi lp. heh, then i could move the epi humbucker to my mexican strat! Oh the possibilities!!

  • @kgfenderbender youre a fender bender too

  • @kgfenderbender

    you're a fender bender too

  • is the sg standard lighter or is the sg special faded lighter?

  • am i the only one who thinks the special sounds better?

  • Both the Standard and Special come loaded with tons of AC/DC riffs

  • @StrongHeartLives HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA

so choice....soooo true.....come on now angus isnt the only badass to play onea these shedevils guys....

    ROCK ON strong heart

  • Both kinda sharp and edgy, not much bass going on with both of em.

  • ACDC!!! \m/

  • sorry but the standard has got more volume and power...cant you hear???

  • They are the same pickups but I believe the Standard's are wax-potted, if so making them a a little more noise resistant and quieter

  • Looks like a special to me.

  • you know you can always change the pickups.

  • Here SG special(not faded) compared with SG standard

    Difference are as follow :

    1. Neck (50s vs 60s) 50s thicker than 60s

    2. Binding for standard but not for special

    3. pickups of course (hotter for standard , softer and classier for special)

    4. Finish (of course u may argue that the finish makes the difference that u can notice)

    5. Price =.=

As for quality , it really sounds so alike to me if same pickups are used .

  • Hi, What song do you play at 3:30?

    Thanks,

    and nice vid!

  • great comparison . the standart sounds better has a richer tone.

  • Oh yeah and I own a faded too. Was planning to swap out the 490s for Burstbuckers but now that I'm used to them I'm in love with them. And the faded just FEELS so good to play. Prefer it over my Les Paul.

  • Mate I'm disappointed! You call this an internet comparison? You didnt ramble on for 5 minutes about your view of guitars and life in general then give us some showpony appregio crap that gave us absolutely no feel for the instrument nor any idea how they compare! Instead you just gave us solid and consistent comparisons using both chords and single notes so we could hear the difference! ;)

  • To be frank the recording quality of the demo is too low to really be able to pick significant differences. If you'd stuck a SM57 in front of the speakers and used a set up that didn't make the mic peak out continually objective conclusions could be made. I appreciate the attempt but I can't make any real calls. If you can't take that criticism listen to my demos. I know - too much talking and my playing often sucks but the sound quality is good enough to go on.

  • @kombik98 yea, the aurdio could be recoded much better/differently,but it just isn't here. They both are plyed in same exact setup, just the the recording equipment was not the best like you say

  • @kombik98

Yes, the recording quality shoots down the comparison. I have a Standard American and used also own a faded and the difference was apparent. But the faded had it's own thing going for it. Could be a matter of taste to a degree.

  • the sound is like 1% different to me anyways -.-`

But I like the faded look better ,,

with out the glossy part , the more you scratch it the more bad ass it gets!!!!!!

  • The sound is like 1% different to me -.- I own the Faded and I love it so much :D

  • identical

  • SG Standard all the way to me the faded sounds a little harsh (has alot of treble or something) compared to the tone of the standard which has a nice balanced sound to it both are great guitars though great demo

  • SG STANDART RULES..!!

  • Great job showing the comparisons!!

  • I like the paint of the faded better, but prefer the inlays and binding on the standard.

  • Nice video. . no talking! Nice! I took the video off my screen and listened without seeing the two to see if I could tell them apart easily. . interesting results as I was still able to hear a difference in the Standard being a bit thicker in sound.

  • Nice video. . no talking! Nice!

  • standard has the same wood, and same pickups of the faded...with the standard you get the paint, motherofpearl inlays, binding ,pickup covers, different knobs..and cost more than a faded...i personally like the "natural look"of the faded.....

  • @kingdjin

     you are incorrect

  • @rlta04 which part of that statement was incorrect? just curious. what i wanna know is which one plays better, the standard or the special. i'm think of getting a special (non-faded), and sticking some pickup covers on there.

  • @41224jason

different pickups, some differences in the way body is,number of ieces of wood, etc, see description

  • @rlta04 how is kindjin wrong? they are made from the same wood and definitely are the same pickups

  • @kingdjin They hasnt the same pikups... ¬¬ (490R-490T Sepcial faded) (490 - 498 Standard)

  • @kingdjin They dont have the same bridge pickup

  • @kingdjin ..You are a dumbass...

  • One of the biggest differences between these two guitars is the feel of the neck. The binding on the Standard makes it a lot more comfortable to play, imho.

  • the standard sounds a little better

  • Love the skull on the Marshall head

  • their both realy great guitars. but i think the standard got more brighter tone.

  • @gibsonsggeni i strongly agree

  • @gibsonsggeni I think they actually bother to check the pots they put into standards. My special had 2 300k and 2 100k pots when it should be 2 500k and 2 300k. 500k pots are a lot brighter. Not a lot of difference other than that. The sound is about 90% down to the amp

  • @marcsibley1 gibson put 300k volume pots and 100k tone pots into all their guitars normally, and have done since 1970s, as far as i'm aware. 500k pots are definitely noticably brighter, i have a Burny SG copy with them where i like to have the tone control rolled back a fair amount because there's a bit too much top end on the bridge pickup.

  • Standard sounds much better if you ask me

  • Fucking special had three again THREE pic ups these posers are playing S.G. standards.

  • im thinking of getting the gibson sg special faded, do u recomment it?

    pls reply .....thanks

  • Why was i under the impression that the SG Special had P-90 pickups?

  • @Anitrop

    classic

  • @rlta04 Asshole. Simple question from the guy

  • @Anitrop old SG specials had P-90's

  • Is Standard lighter than Special?

Does anybody here know the weight difference?

    Thanks.

  • @TheFILIPHENOM

weights will vary from each individul guitar to guitar, even of the same exact brand, model ,etc, due simply to the wood used. Each piece of wood used for each guitar may weigh considerably more or less than the same guitar ,same model, etc, just because thats how wood is.There is no certain weight of any of these.Either one could weigh more or less than the other.

  • is it a sound difference between the special and the standard?

  • @XxmaximilianxX1

    Some ,yes

  • Creative Bundle?

  • @XxmaximilianxX1

    Don't understand?

    Coul you elaburate?

  • Standard is way better.

  • I like this. I own a 1968 original Gibson SG with the pearl inlays and original everything. But I first bought a 1990 Gibson SG. The sound is noticeable. When I first wanted an SG, I wanted the Special, but my Mom did research and found out that they were fake or epiphone quality and she said she would spend the extra money to find me an original so it will be with me forever. I love my Gibson SG. But I wish it had the lightning bolt pearl inlays.

  • @4EverLed

True stuff Now days its easier to find the lightning bolt model to purchase.

I really like the lightning bolt inlays too

  • @rlta04 But I'm 14 and I'm busy with High School. I can't afford 2 grand on guitar right now. My 2 SG's were used and their value were under estimated. Every year they are worth more money since they are vintage. I was thinking about getting the Angus Young signature guitar since it had them but that will take some time to save.

  • Went back in forth between the riff played on 2:55 and 3:30 side by side with two windows open muting one or the other & I seriously could barely find a difference between the two pickups. I'd say the 498t (standard) could be a tiny bit more full sounding or controlled than the 490t (special) it but really didn't seem any hotter.

Really hard to tell through a camera mic.

Like to see this test again through a good mic and some studio software.

Perhaps we have been duped by the Gibson corp?

  • @trollocaust

your probably right about the camera mic.Its doesn't capture the tone well. There a distinct difference to be heard ,but doesn't come thru well with the camera mic and the you tube quality as well.

  • whats the second song you play

  • The standard sounds way better...

  • I didn't know that Angus Young from AC/DC doesn't use his Signature pups in his SG anymore. He uses Seymour Duncan. I sent them an email and they told me which model he uses but I forgot. He still has an endorsement with Gibson I guess. I guess that is why they still sell them with his name on them.

  • I like the Standard better. Never liked a dull finish much. I wish I could run across a Toni Iommi Model with the cross inlays. Epiphone tried but the crosses don't come down all the way like Gibsons does. When I played an SG STD at GC I had to turn the treble controll way down on the guitar. Very bright and crisp, especially compared to my Gibson LP Traditional Plus. I love the look of the tuners also but they just don't stay in tune compared to a set of Grovers.

  • whats the song at 9.21 ?

    thx for the awesome vid

  • the standard is a little better, both aesthetically and sonically

  • I think they both have a beautiful sound, i'm picking up a faded soon. thanks for making this video!!

  • I think they both have a beautiful sound, i'm picking up a faded soon

  • I went by my local shop and tried out both for myself. I tried the standard first, and was blown away with sound, build quality, and easy of play. I sat there with it for a good hour. Then I tried the faded... For 2 minutes.. And put it back on the rack. The difference when it's in your hands is just astronomical.

  • @FennecFoxity Thats the sad thing. The quality was awful when I tried it. Strings tension was awful, action was awful and even after some tweaking of the bridge and etc, it just couldn't hold up. I've played Epiphones that sounded better, played better, and had a better setup straight out of the box. All they did was make an inferior product and slap a Gibson name on it.

  • The Faded is brighter.

  • what are u playing at 8.19 ?

  • the standard is a little more beastly than the faded..all the same great guitar! i can't wait.. :D

  • the standard is a little more beastly than the faded..all the same great guitar! i can't wait.. :)

  • The Standard, hands down, I have one, are you running it through a 50 watt plexi? Pedals? Thanks for posting...... this kind of thing is a massive help to buyers

  • @spacemanGoldie your welcome man.Thats the main reason I posted it.Its similiar to a plexi.Its a 1972 model 1987x 50 watt

  • It's all subjective. I have both also, and to me the Standard has more of a crisp attack to the notes, while the Faded is a warmer, more rounded "blunter" sound. I love 'em both!

@Rita04: Thank you for providing a tool that I have used many times over the past few years. I really have appreciated these samples.

  • i dont get the difference besides the finish on the standard and the inlays. When i go to guitar center there the faded for 700 and the standard is $1200 whats the difference\

  • @younggunna774 e I've listed the differences in the video description as well as it has been covered here over.I am not going to type it all again. Look it up

  • um...how r we supposed to know which one sounds better? the video's audio quality kinda messes them both up...

  • @PrivateRyanGuitar It is what it is I guess. Go to music store and try them I suppose.you'll figure it out

  • as soon as he plugs in that Standard, my ears start to say "oh yeah, much better"

  • It seems like the standard has a bit more of a "rage" over it. I think the special faded sounds a bit... well... faded, compared to the standard. but that's just my opinion.

  • there is a very little diference

  • The standard sounds better.. It's better. .

  • faded all the way for me

  • dude same neck ?

  • @surasakwongchai1

basically yes.both thick style neck however evry neck is very slightly different as they are hand made to an extent

  • SG STANDARD WHOOOO WAY BETTER!!!! MIGHT GET HER SOON U CAN JUST TELL BY THE LOOKS!! as soon as he played the first chord on the standard u got that rich beauty classic gibson tone other that the special is more clean although some tuning might have been alittle more accurate for the special although very good review

  • man i got a standard and put 2 57´s classic pick ups on it.....it sounds great.....very vintage...i can post a video ....its cool

  • it seems more power and medium-high in the Standard...More rich sounds...I prefer it (and own :-))

  • Ya unless my ears deceive me the Standard has a better high end and more clarity. I still say PRS is better :)

  • Which one would suit the music I'm playing better - Standard or Faded? Or would they at all? To know what I'm playing - please see my channel (hard to describe ;) ).

    Thank you! :)

  • Can anyone help me? I have a 2007 sg standard in White? Were they a limited run or something? I haven't really seen any more of them! Thanks! John.

  • I used to own a SG Faded but I ended up selling it, which I came to regret very much...However in a few days I'm picking up a second hand SG Standard because I've always wanted one.

  • i dont like it when people say the sg faded isnt a true gibson it makes me feel like i dont have a gibson but im learning to not care because to me its awsome and not have a high gloss finish means that the guitar can breath and let out its true tone

  • sg standard iz the best!

  • i think the coverd pickups have a rounder sound the the uncoverd ones

  • Comment removed

  • @kc47u

    yea

  • I'm gettin a standard in 8 days

  • Obviously the terminations and the pickups in both guitars are different, I don't think that the neck binding and trapezoids would make a difference, The pickups make the difference in my opinion and thats easyly fixable

  • i got a Standard SG yesterday it sounds beautiful! i down traded from a Taylor solid-body because the playability sucked and now i cant stop playing my SG XD

  • I love to play shoot to thrill also on my SG. I got the Standard a couple last Sunday because my birthday was on monday. My dad played the other SG's they had at guitar center and said the Standard was definately the best.

  • what are your amp settings??

  • The SG Standart has a higher attack. It has this special "BITE" if you know what I mean. On the other Hand the Sg special has a warmer sound.

But howerver im a ACDC FAN i like both ^^

  • Standard sounds...less sharp. I like it over the Faded. Gonna get the Standard.

  • Basedon everything I see here i'm going to have to go Standard cuz not only sound great it has looks that kill!!

  • Which out of the two do you perfer? I perfer the standard myself.

  • @Marshallsg definately

  • @Marshallsg I dont even consider 'faded' to be a real Gibson, so either a normal sg special or standard. I'd take the standard every day of my life over the special.

  • Thank you this comparison.

But you show the difference between 490t bridge pickup and 498t bridge pickup.

How do neck pickups sound ? (490r vs 490r) This comparison is necessary for demonstrating the reel difference of sound between two guitars.

  • @FausseMonnaie yes,I did not use the neck pickups.I do most of my playing thru the bridge I guess.Maybe if I get to it some day I will do the neck pickup comparison, but no time soon

  • standard all the way

  • Just a correction for you rlta04, i'm sure the special faded has 410R and 490T, the special has 490R and 490T, and like you mentioned the standard has 490R and 498T

  • @duracellaltoids Ok,you lost me

    whats the correction?

Did I have a typo and write 410r instead of 490r someplace?

  • @rlta04 Sorry to bother you but i was wondering if you knew how you can get the definition of the chords on a guitar like this without it getting drounded out? Like for when you play the intro to For Those About to Rock. I can't get the chords to be so defined like i can hear on the album! it sucks!!!

  • @rlta04 It's all getting confusing now lol, i was trying to say that the SG Special Faded which you're playing here has 410R and 490T pickups, not the 490R and 490T like you mention in your description. There is however another SG called the SG Special which doesn't have a faded finish, that's the one that contains the 490R and 490T pickups, sorry for any unwanted hastle

  • @duracellaltoids Its getting more confusing. The special faded has a 490r in the neck and the 490t in the bridge,as does the special. The special is the same as the special faded, other than the finish

  • The wood also gives a ''fast'' feeling, gives a very fast attack and decay, very fast and ''soft'' , meaning slim feeling to play so to speak, very heavy wooden type and has a nice sound, gives very clear notes. Along with Rosewood, the wood doesnt have to be painted cause the wood types already got so much oil and resin contained naturally. Both wood types are popular choices for fingerboards.

  • i dunno what it is about sg's, theres nothing like especially good about them to my ears, unless its acdc tone kinda thing they sound quite thin, harsh trebly sound and lack depth and that ballsy low mids sound i dearly love.

  • The Special is no match towards the Standard.

Btw, forget the Special and take a look at the Epiphone SG custom GX prophecy. A killer axe.

  • looks excatly like mine

  • so the special faded is very better like an Epiphone ? no ?

  • I agree the Standard sounds a little better (looks nicer too). I wonder if it sounds better just because it is louder / hotter though? More output is more distortion in this case.

I have a Les Paul Studio and like to turn the volume to about 7-8 for playing clean. I keep the bridge pickup @10 for distortion stuff.

Now i wonder if the different LP studios sound different as well (faded vs. glossy) though as someone else pointed out each is a little different piece of wood.

  • @piccicacca actually open coils are brighter then covered coils..

  • The standard is better of course. But have any of you ever played the faded? That thing is amazing. I was expecting a little bit better than epiphone quality but that thing sounded great.

  • @lllULTIMATEMASTERlll It definately is better than the epiphone

  • @rlta04 oh i know man. Gibsons, greatest guitars in the world.

  • @lllULTIMATEMASTERlll true words, once you get the faded you're gonna want the standard in six months :DDD (ihave faded and i wanna standard :D)
