Any American would feel the same when going to Sudan. Not knowing how things are there any more than they know how it is here. I would love to go and experience the culture there. No one is stupid here. No reason for anyone to throw insults anywhere. I wish I could have been a part of showing them around America and teaching them things. Not everyone is mean here.
i love this video because it's a really nice learning experience both for the group of boys from Sudan as well as for the Americans they come in contact with
these group seems fun to hang out with. they're very great thinkers and all their question is OMG!!!! THEY SKIPPED GREAT LINE ON 1:40!!!! cmon man when one of the Sudanese tried the potato chip for first time he said " it's ready " aww please put this on :)
Me and my friends met Daniel last year. He looked through my math textbook and got really excited because he loves education. Then before he left, he gave us a twenty dollar bill and told us to use it to help someone in need. Life changing <3
This was a wonderful, moving documentary. I just wanted to give them all hugs. These are examples of people who come to America and make it a better place.
Its so true man. We live in the most advanced country in the world and we all live like strangers. Nobody talking to eachother. Its funny how that lady said "do you have alot of freedom here you didnt have" it didnt look like it at all.
"which is what she most likeley thought" You don't know that, you heard only a clip of the conversation. She was asking IF they had more freedom, not declaring.
"she might ahve been thinking that America is the only country with freedom and that Europe is a country"
You see, this is ironic, you are angry because of the assumptions the woman is making, but you actually don't know if she is, your making assumptions about her making assumptions. Your being a hypocrite.
@VinnieDain424 I don't really understand how that is an unreasonable question? Many people flee various countries in Africa because of oppressive dictatorships or genocide ect... Why would that question cause you to loose respect for americans? What's wrong with it?
@VinnieDain424 "Do you have a lot of freedom here?" is an understandable question if the woman thought they were fleeing political oppression. I don't think it makes her, or Americans in general, rude or ignorant.
Wouldn't it have been less psychologically stressful for the sponsoring charity to send the Lost Boys to a rural area of the US, perhaps be sponsored by a farm family or farm work-study program while they learned the culture? I don't know the logistics of something like this, I'd be really curious to find out on a policy level why the program was implemented this way.
I agree with everyone that this is a shame that they are treated this way. The matter of the fact is we don't trust people, especially men if they're in big groups small groups, alone in the dark. Anywhere. We don't have a feeling of safety because we constantlyhear things on the news about someone being murdered, mugged, raped, etc. We can't trust people anymore, that's the sad part. It's sad that we judge anyone we don't know as having the capability of hurting us.
at the end it's funny how they showed that children are the future. lets show them some good morals so they don't grow up to be like asses like that women in the pool..
It really changes my perspective of people from such unstable countries. They seem more educated than half the people that I know, and definitely, infinitely more resourceful.
I'm not an American, but the anti-US comments here is just laughable. The culture in the US is just different, it's not a bad thing. Look at Sudan, they're famous for the genocides committed there, but nobody here is talking about Sudan being a dangerous country. It's all "Murika iz balls lol ingnurunt loiolol my cuntry iz bettur".
@areyu93 im pretty sure they were just like that becuase of the TV cameras and all that.. kids dont normally go to random people in groups and interrogate them lol
@VinnieDain424 Would you have preferred the lady just ignored them? She may not be a State Department expert on the exact political situation in every country around the world, but at least shes trying to be friendly!
Come to Canada. Plenty of people from Sudan went to my high school, they are all great people. We will help you adapt to life in our country and live great lives :)
The description says National Geographic, and that's bullcrap. These are clips from one of the best documentaries you will ever see, called God Grew Tired Of Us.
One of these guys achieved, in four years, to get a masters degree in business and organize a nationwide cultural institution for people from Sudan. All this after growing up in a country with no electricity and a ghastly civil war.
In four years he did more than most people do in their lifetime.
@1971ojoalparche1971 I had discovered this little movie on national geographic website. After I had searched this topic, I discovered that this is only a part of the movie released in 2006. Now I changed the description. Hope that you can see the difference.
Glad to know that these guys feel the same frustration I do when visiting the States. It's cool to watch how some people react though, some good, some not so good. Culturally, I think it's important that we all learn to get along well with each other as to bridge the ties that bind us. Despite cultural differences, there is much more that we have in common than we share in differences. Unfortunately, people tend to forget this.
i'm not ashamed to be an american. yes the cultural differences are great. yes we could improve. but you should only be ashamed if you do not want improvement. if you are working to become a friendly helpful product of the world then i don't see a problem. educate yourself. enjoy life. hold a hand. America is not a horrible. PEOPLE are horrible. you have to try.
@CurtisDoverY0 America (assuming you went U.S.A) is made up of and controlled by people. You can't really call a place a country without people governing and living in it. Therefore your argument sort of contradicts itself. And I agree that you should not be ashamed to be an American but the prejudice and stereotypes here are very alarming to me. But every country has its own problems I guess. Sudan has its poverty and the US has its arrogance.
@locherer agreed agreed. and you're right tou cant call a place a country without people governing it. what i meant to say is that people become "ashamed" to be citizens due to the problems the country has. Like you said, U.S. has it's ignorance, but NOT EVERY american is ignorant. i guess what i was trying to get at is the commenters below me shouldnt so readily give up hope in their country when they could be the CHANGE it needs. :)
lol americans are such horrible people im ashamed to be one too. Think our country has to get its shit together. Look people with 1/3 of what we have, have soo much better of a quality of life and meaning of life im sure. My life is like the game of monopoly to a perfect T. I hate that game !!! arghhh
I'm ashamed because Americans tend to be disrespectful, judgmental and rude. Now, I know not ALL Americans are exactly like the ones depicted here, but it's not very far off.
In the documentary, an American called the cops on them because he/she felt threatened by a group of Sudanese men who were simply minding their own business. How ridiculous is that? A person so prejudice towards dark-skinned people that he/she actually called the cops on them.
You didn't even know the difference between prejudice and racism.
You're not seeing beyond the whole "large numbers" issue because you choose not to. Anyways, I have to admit that the video did not provide enough information on the issue to allow me to prove my point.
@ParadoxAnonymous TROLL! A mythological creature from Norwegian folklore who lives in the woods and eat people. Not too bright so it is easily fooled.
@A55ma57er -yeah, where I come from in Norway, there are trolls both in the woods and in the mountains. I am really scared of them. Dad used to warn me, that my uncle wife is a real troll, and it shows in the way she is behaving. She is treating my uncle real bad, sometimes.
Bless them all. :)
