  • i was on acid when i first saw manfred mann play this song.

  • Legendary. :')

  • bring it all back, coz my names Pat and I carry a sack to the Greto Garbo homes...

  • In me little snapshot album:George Formby has some great things 2 answer 4.

  • I still think it is Paul Jones...the film he made with Jean Shrimpton was called Privilege, still lousy acting th o...

  • Love the little nod to 'Ode to Joy' with the flute riff.

  • brilliant song...

  • yep...love the 60s pop !

  • quirky sixties at its best, Paul Jones before he went into acting@!?>.....top of the pops?

  • @MothersHour I'm pretty sure that's Mike D'abo, not Paul Jones.

  • @BlackMonk66

I'd bet my whatsit that the mod guy singing is Paul Jones, the first lead singer of Manfred Mann. Anyone remember the atrocious film that he starred in with Jean Shrimpton, after he left MM. I think it was called,..... Tribute or xxxxxxxxxx, God, cant remember, but PJ was some sort of a prophet who was idolized by the youth of the time creating riots and unrest ect.... 2 gorgeous faces of the UK sixties, but talk about wooden and stiff performances!!

  • @MothersHour The film was Privilege.

I don't know Jones' or D'abo's faces enough to recognize either, but that's definitely D'abo's voice and he was the singer on the record. I'd be surprised if they got Paul Jones to come back to lipsync to the song, but stranger things have happened.

Watching it again, Paul Jones is in this clip. When he sings the line about "my friend Paul." it cuts to a photo of him.

  • @MothersHour I remember that film.Terrible it was too

  • @BlackMonk66 It's Paul Jones

  • @joycejnn I did a bit more research, and it's definitely D'abo. Paul Jones left the band in 1966. This is from 1968 and it's the same lead vocalist as in the videos of other songs from the D'abo era-which I should have checked before I wrote the last comment-"Ha Ha Said the Clown" and "The Mighty Quinn."

  • @BlackMonk66Ah I see there is a photo of Paul Jones when they sing my friend Paul.D'abo really looks like him.Could be his twin.

  • @BlackMonk66 Completely different voice than Paul Jones as well.I need to pay more attention.Isn't this a Peter,Paul and Mary song ? and they did a film about the place.

  • @joycejnn They do look a lot alike. Not so much now-they're both in The Manfreds-but they did then. When I checked to see if D'abo was still in the group, I found out two things. One, he wrote Build Me Up, Buttercup, which I probably knew and forgot, and two, he has a band called "the Mighty Quintet" which is the worst pun I've heard in a while, which I admire. Don't know about PP&M, not my cup of tea.

  • @BlackMonk66 I think Peter , out of PP&M, was involved in making a film about "The Greta Garbo Home", called You are what you Eat.They're not my cup of tea either and "The Mighty Quintet" is an awful pun but I do like some of the Manfred Man stuff.

  • @joycejnn It turns out the song is on that soundtrack, but not by PPM, by the writer, John Simon.

I just checked out some Manfreds videos. Paul Jones kept his voice pretty well. Mike D'abo not as much, but clear, non-bluesy tenors don't age as well. Not that he's bad, he just doesn't have the same sound. I'd go see them if they played here. Don't think that'll happen soon, though.

  • quirky sixties at its best.....top of the pops?

  • Does anyone know what year this great song was made?

  • @rogershearman 1968 :)

  • Not heard that in years and I mean YEARS - cool

  • bloody brill

  • eby gum this takes u back

  • One of my favorite cheeses from 1968. Amazing how so many people don't remember this

  • My Name Is Jack? Hmm D'Abo? Hmm? My friend Paul runs fast. Double hmm - allegedly. No offence anyone.

  • great song my 4 yr old son loves this song and sings to it all the time as he thiks the song is named after him love the sixties

  • grim, not sure myself,so why did i post..no idea

  • great....

  • Dieser Song ist einfach a Amazing!!!!!!!!!!

  • Classic song, amazing and hilariously camp performance by singer Mike D'arbo, brilliant, haha said the clown, oh yeah and if you didn't know that's Klaus Voorman on bass.

  • I remember both this and Ha Ha Said The Clown from Junior Choice in the late 70's with Ed Stewart, really brings back some memories even though I wasn't around when it first came out.

  • never heard this song in 59 years what the hell have i been missing

  • I KNOW, IM 30 I LIKE IT AND I DONT KNOW WHY

  • Fandabbydozzy. Takes me so well back to a great holiday in Jersey around the same time Bergerac was being filmed.

  • Was Manfred Mann the one playing the piano?

  • One of my favorite songs!

  • Didnt the Bass Player Klaus? draw the cover art for The Beatles Album Revolver.

  • Klaus Voorman...? Good question. I think he might have

  • this is my new favorite song! long live the 60s!

  • Between Tom McGuinness and Manfred Mann I can't decide who is the best looker!

They must have been the forerunners of Geek Chic.

  • A fave 60's song.

    Something of a theme tune.

Reminds my of my work place the Uni of Herts.

  • Goofy, fun song. Love it.

  • Was there ever such a thing as the "Greta Garbo" Home for Wayward Boys and Girls?

  • Well if there wasn't there should have been. Lord knows there was great need of just such a thing in the 60's. Maybe they'd have done more than turn out the louts they are.

  • @girlblue73 The Greta Garbo home was a grand hotel that had fallen in to a state o disrepair and was then occupied by hippiesand druggies in the summer of love.

  • Mike D'Abo gives possibly the campest performance from a non-gay man in history here. Great pop song though.

  • Thank God we have no steps for him to run up and down on!

  • Great song, and great to see the Manfreds having fun on stage. Thanks for posting!

  • this song stays in my head

  • Great song.

I have a new grandson called Jack

  • GREAT POST I HAVE IT IN MY FAVS SOMEWHERE hey garyco great share always nice to hear THANKS MY GREAT AUSSIE FRIEND

  • Great song...thanks, its appreciated to hear again after so long forgotton.

  • Wow, Roman Polanski on bass

  • I think this song was used in a film from c. 1969 called You Are What You Eat. I only ever heard it played on one station & I loved it! That station was in Portland, Oregon and not only did they play unusual songs like this, but after midnight you could request complete albums. I've still got tapes somewhere I made of things like the Super-sessions albums of Stevie Winward, Mike Bloomfield, etc. I have no idea what the call letters were, but it was one of the best stations I ever listened to!

  • great song, so sad with all the noise of today.

  • Great! It took a long time to finally hear this again. There were one or two other songs from this same time that get air play (and I can't think of them right now) but this one has been elusive. Thanx.
