My father Arny Stone Directed this "Classic" spot. There must have been a bunch of us kids at this shoot because I have pictures from that day as well and I was about 10 years old at the time.
I was there at the shoot, my dad, Dick Keith, wrote the commercial. Bill did takes all day and made several shots. He was always supposed to make it. At the end of the day, near 10 pm, there was enough film for one last shot and this was it. You cn actually hear us laughing and applauding. Filmed in the library of the Lotus Club in NYC
@Lapcooler Actually my mother, Shirley Riley-Davis wrote the commercial who worked with your dad on the spot. I was there at that shoot as well and it's one of the best memories of my childhood. I even have a picture of your dad and the entire creative team at the Clio awards from the 70's. It was a great era!
I had heard an urban legend about this commercial that claimed Russell was supposed to miss a shot and then say "I can miss, but you can't with long Distance". But after making another basket, Russell ad-libbed "I can't miss, and neither can you with Long Distance". That take ended up being used.
Classic. There's another where he is seated and makes a shot and yells at the end, "I can't miss" But the expression here is funny too. I think he probably had to have several takes to make that hook and say the lines together since there was no editing done. Plus he made it with the right and he is left handed, so when it rolled in...Aaaaaaagg. Thanks for posting.

Why does Bill Russell have a basketball hoop in his living room?

I would have never thought that Bill would have done a commercial... I thought he's never been very personable?
