  • Really love this idea and your suggestions!! I live in Texas and we were most definitely affected by Hurricane Katrina and then by Ike. I'm thinking about writing a blog this afternoon for those people who are staying at home and might lose electricity. Most of your suggestions will be applicable for both! Kudos for a great video once again!!

  • Wonderful video!!!!!!!!!!!!!! I learned sooo much! I thought I had a great BOB, I realize now I didn't, but I will now! You MAY have saved my life!

    The blessings of Yeshua.

  • I always had in having the material at hand to make a travois would be a good idea if 1 would be forced to move supplies any distance. A wheeled handcart would be better, but more difficult to stow to keep hand in a vehicle The "flashlight" I use most is the single bright LED 1 on my key chain

  • "and theres also a thermometer on there", "HAHAHAHAHAHAHA"

  • wonderfullllll

  • hmmmmmm ill stick to nutnfancys USK thumbs up if your a TMPer

  • mmmmm

  • Good Stuff, but I wouldn't carry a 30lbs backpack.

  • Nuclear radiation will kill you, not just from the air, but from the environment. Neutron radiation can not be filtered out from a mask, it permeates the air and environment. You may not die, but you will feel the effects, and it will be painful.

  • Review the Katadyn Survivor

Only filter that can pump fresh water from ANY contaminated water source. Including the ocean.

  • I dont you mom was very interested...

  • where he get that flashlight

  • @netpervader The flashlights can be purchased from any outdoor specialty store, hunting store, surplus store, etc, such as REI, Campmor, Cabellas, and Eastern Mountain Sports.

  • What he apparently doesn't know is that with those painters air masks, you need to keep the whole mask, or at least the filtering canisters sealed, they filter even when you aren't breathing...

Like "Clearlyme2u" said, no fire no water. some things he has I wouldn't bother with, and that takes me to my nest point, PACK FOR YOUR AREA,

also, most of the time, emergency situations that you would need a pack like this for normally lasts more than 72 hours!

  • @chopperboi89 but when a canister is just sitting there, there is only air flow from osmosis, so it really does not suck up much stuff except when you are breathing through it. I always stock an extra set of new sealed canisters in case, and when smells start coming through the canisters,I know it is time for a new set.

  • this video covered mostly brands, but still good

  • that gas mask isn't good enough

  • @maxinpains like I said, it is a cost effective solution for common problems. Sure, a gas mask is best if under chemical or nuclear attack, which we all hope will never happen. I do have a set of gas masks, but never use them. I use the painters masks many times a year for various toxic solvent , smoke, and mold conditions.

  • @steindesign1 that's great. I have those mask too.

  • @maxinpains The mask was not repented as a gas mask

  • What is the deal with that fake chart showing temperatures rising? England and Ireland are having the coldest winters in a hundred years. And every scientist and historian knows temperatues were much hotter in the middle ages. Man is not big enough to affect the climate, we are ants thinking we are killing the world with our footsteps

  • @johnmonk66 Not a fake chart. A survey of over 900 peer reviewed scientific papers showed not a single one disputed that the climate was warming, though only 3 out of 4 attributed it to man. The rest showed data about the climate change, without saying whether thy felt it was attributed to man or not. The climate change deniers state opinion as fact, without any scientific data or peer reviewed papers as back up evidence.

  • @steindesign1 You really don't get it, do you? If a scientist reminds us the world warms globaly every 100,000 years he gets squat, if he says it's your fault, governments give him money to study his bullshit theory. People have become millionaires spouting those lies.

  • You need self defence, where is the gun??????/

  • He talks about guns in his book. He only skims the surface in this video.

  • 3 mile island was not that bad they made a mountain out of a molehill.

  • 28 min wooooo i wish we canmake our videos that long

  • Peak Moment has been posting shows since 2006. Apparently they "grandfathered" in our shows when they limited shows to 10 minutes awhile back.

  • Tea tree oil... Anyone know anything about that? Sounds good I haven't heard of it yet.

  • Has some anti-fungal, anti-inflammatory properties. A friend uses it against toxic mold.

  • 26:30 Lady: "And what I'm really, really noticing is that...I mean you're also gonna bring your clothing, you're also gonna bring some cash, you're also gonna bring..you know......you're ...Eye glasses."

    Man: "Pharmaceutical medicine."

    Lady: "Right"

    Somewhat unexpected.

  • @globalwarming93 She said "...things that are personal..." pharmaceuticals is something that an individual may need

  • @globalwarming93 They where speaking of any PRESCRIPTION medication you need.. real important for diabetics & those who need medication for seizure control, to name only a couple of examples.

  • I have a surgical kit, sutures and such. Don't forget the booze for pain killers. As for gas mask, last year got Isreali gas masks. I keep one in my desk at work. If a fire and I smell smoke...tuck it under my arm...if caught in stairwell...I have it. Survivalism is going mainstream. I tell my kid I'm just a Boy Scout at heart. Also get wool blankets. KIdnapping will be big when the economy crashes. Better have shit to trade to get your child back. Girls are sold into sex trade!

  • what the hell is this?

  • 1:37 What the hell was that shoulder movement for? lol

  • Can you tell me what quality of filter I got when I purchased they Katadyn Hiker Pro? Would it be any good for use on the "duck pond" or "Katrina flood waters" you mentioned?

  • Katadyn is a quality manufacturer. This filter is good for duck ponds and scummy water, as it filters out bacteria and has a carbon core to take out organic chemicals plus nasty tastes and odors. Only down side is that it is not field serviceable with a cleanable ceramic core, like some of the other Katadyne and MSR filters.

  • The carbon filters for the respirator need to be originally sealed, If they are sitting out in the open they absorb everything that they come in contact with. The unsealed carbon filter can become useless over time. A new sealed carbon filter will perform as it should

  • a lot of his gear is pretty big

  • Lol that woman is so interested in them, trying to grab em out of the guy's hands. :D

  • Wow ! Where to start??? 1. Clarify & B O I L your water. Filtering water is NOT enough. 2. Perhaps I missed it but I saw no...NO fire source. While MUCH of this information is good RESEARCH RESEARCH RESEARCH for yourself. Remember the Rule of 3s 3 minutes without air 3 Days without water 3 Weeks without food. Only 3 seconds without your smarts. No Fire=No Water I'm betting this is Mom interviewing Dad with Junior on the camera. MOST info here is good. Learn More !
  • Hi clearlyme2u, Thanks for your important additions and reminders.

Wrong bet. It's the Peak Moment host Janaia interviewing the book author Mat Stein with Peak Moment videographer Robyn Mallgren on the camera. You don't get good lighting like that from Junior.

But thanks for the support and adding to our info!

  • Then I stand corrected.

    Good video though.

  • Iodine takes care of the non boiling of water.

  • @clearlyme2u Yes you missed the small camp stove and cook kit.

  • If I have to I could do it....hahaha.....Only if you're trained. You can't just read the instructions and expect yourself to be able to sew stitches

  • My daughter, who was untrained, stitched up a friend in a situation where reporting to a medical facility may have resulted in his arrest. Not recommended, but the wound healed perfectly! In the old days, hunters and soldiers stitched them selves, or friends, on a regular basis to save lives.

  • OMG! PEAK OIL? PEAK POPULATION? LOL. Could put every man woman in child with a quarter acre in Australia and still have room to boot. If you dont produce co2 then how will plants live? If you do not use water then how can it evaporate into the sky so it can rain? LOL...was this sponsored by Al Gore or F.E.M.A.? LOL ! What a JOKE!

  • who ever c ame up with the 72 hour time line?

  • MRE's are the best you can eat them cold or but em in hot water

  • knife?

  • I know in theory you can survive 30 days without food , but I don't think in an emergency situation going 30 days w/o food is practical. You're going to need stamina to evacuate. Think about it. What would your stamina be like after five days?

  • 7:22 = bad idea. I can make a wood stove out of a bean can that could boil a pot of water in 7 - 12 minutes. Yes sir..

  • good stuff.. could you care to make a video of it?

  • or you can learn to make fire with a fire steel and just have a few btls of water pure tabs and ur good

  • people, don't forget to bring weapons for everyone in your family (self defense, hunting, etc) or else someone might come along and take your survival kit

  • Yeah , I have been thinking about that. hafta find some effective self defense. Not suire what to do though.

  • Wool is a great material.

--If you are exposed to fire, it won't melt to your skin like acrylic. In fact, it is highly fire retardant.

--If you are exposed to cold water, wool retains about 80% of it's insulation (I've read 80% somewhere)

--Itchy? Not Merino wool. More expensive? Yes.

    Wool is underrated.

  • Matt , have you actually used the mylar space blanket? Does it really work?

  • they work but if possible use something else they are very loud and delicate

  • yes thats true. but there are also permanent space blankets which are 18 $ at a camping store near me, and they last forever but arnt loud and silver. they are thicker and orange

  • What if the magnetic pole shift happens as Eienstein said it would? Will a compass work? What about if many volcanoes erupt, will the painters mask suffice in dealing with the ashes? What about the water if it is contaminated by the ashes and becomes acitic etc... ???

Will the water filter work then?

I am not sure what is to come but, I really want to be prepared for anything and be self sufficient for my daughter and myself.

  • You can't plan for everything, but you can be flexible enough to deal with everything. My "pit-of-the-stomach" exercise helps you to make decisions when the rational mind does not have adequate information to make a good decision. We all have "inner compass" that can guide us intuitively when we do not know all the answers. During a pole shift, a compass will not work, but after a pole shift, a compass will work though you may need to use the North Star to calibrate your compass.

  • Get a filter that will filter the water thats stored in your 30 or 50 gallon water heater

Water is the most important, trust me

  • your backpack must be huge, I gotta say its all good info but I would not want to carry all that stuff. Being more select we your gear could lighten up the stuff you bring.

  • As I mentioned in the video, some items are for my kit that I throw in the car, and smaller more compact items are things I would choose to put in my back pack. I have spent months in the back country, so I am quite aware of what is needed when I am carrying it all on my back, but I also have things that I stock in my trailer for when I have the luxury or gasoline powered transportation.

  • @beast12101

I pick and choose if it has to go onto my back. For instance, I have a large "river guide's" first aid kit that goes in a blue tub in my truck, if I am able to take my truck, but if it goes on my back, I take the compact palm sized first aid kit with a stretchy ace bandage and a roll of 1 1/2" cloth first aid tape, and the big kit stays at home in the blue tub.

  • All you ever need is a canteen with the canteen cup, a lighter, a Ka-bar and maybe a shot gun. Cool video though, especially for the uninformed and unprepared.

  • Ok , hopefully this question will post this time. lol are clothes that are polyster/cotton blend suitable for wet weather or do they need to be 100% polyester?

  • Cotton absorbs and holds water, so it won't keep you dry when needed. Polyester doesn't absorb, so it'll keep you dry. I think it mostly depends on what you want to use the garment for -- what the need or situation is. Mat's suggestion is to stay warm and dry -- thus no cotton, or little cotton.

  • peakmoment , what about clothing that is polyester/ cotton blend? Would that work mokay if wet or should there be no cotton at all?

  • Would a painting respirator really cut it for a nuclear disaster? Granted, it's better than nothing, but there's no protection from eyes, and you'd have to make sure it passed all the chemical tests.

Still, a few good ideas to add. Thanks.

  • I go into detail on this in the new edition of my book. Sure, a full blown body suit and gas mask is best, but in small scale disasters, like a terrorist act or a power plant melt down, the painters mask and water filter will keep about 99.9% of the contamination from entering the body. Lots of other considerations I don't have room for here. Best to get out of Dodge fast, as soon as the air clears. In a power plant problem, it gets worse over time, so get out of town fast to minimize exposure.

  • man screw that food he has i get MRE'S a hell lot better...

  • BORING CRAP

  • Agreed! That is what the folks on Kobe Japan and New Orleans thought. Much more fun to focus on other things.

  • yeah, when I seen those people standing on their roofs I thought, do they have any water how long have they been there and how long are they going to be there

  • 28 mins long boring

  • Excellent summary. We're reviewing our 72 hour kit and adding some of your suggested items to it.

  • good ideas,I would be broke after buying all that stuff.lol

  • Why not buy things bit by bit? We're starting with the water filter. Keep an eye out at yard sales and eBay, too.

  • That's a very good tip. And exactly what I did as well; buy a few items every month, and you'll have your survival kit in less than a year. Also, I'd like to say this is an excelent video! Keep 'm coming 5/5

  • We have been buying items over the past couple years a little at a time. L*w*s has the masks for around 30-40 bucks, every couple weeks buy one. That's better than having nothing at all when you need it and before you know it your kit will be complete. I appreciate this video so much, Aqua mira is next on my list.

  • A must have is the lettermen or Multi tool. 5 years ago Hiker Aron Ralston, used a Multi tool to amputate his own arm and free himself from a boulder. So for me it's a must have.

  • wouldnt a mobile phone have been better for him, hahahah

  • haha so true XDDDD

  • Looks like Christmas morning. I put a glock in my kit.

  • Great stuff, thank you!
