My story for this one is that I was stood up by a bird in Dublin. Feeling slightly sorry for myself I wandered into the Harp Bar and was lucky to see live the most exciting match I've ever seen, the pub atmosphere was electric!!
a great French team w/ REAL Frenchmen. Now all they have are average Black and Arab players who wudnt have even made the bench in this Mighty Les Bleus of the 80's

this harald shumacher is a monster he should have been sent off and batiston could have scored without being almost killed by that monste.the french played for the joy of game; the german took it as a battle; they fioghted; to hell with them.
But it is sure that nowadays the "crime" of Shumacher vs Battiston give to him a Red Card and the match would have been won by this wonderfull French Team sure
France was fantastic that day, but they made one mistake that turned vital for them - they didn't go on defense at 3:1. they still went ahead, and paid for that. Respect to Germany - except the keeper! - that they didn't give up! no many would find courage enough to equalize against such team in just 22 minutes. The Germans did! But let's be objective - Italy would win against France either. They simply were better than all others, even better than Brazil.
for all the people who are still bitching around because of this match,1st the keepers back in this time were privileged(look at brazilians keeper at the 1/4Final'86) 2nd battiston shot the ball before schumacher collided with him and he missed the goal 3rd france scored the 1-1 only by a penalty 3rd italy would had won the same in the final because they became better match after match and won clearly, even the german team was exhausted after the 1/2Final.just accept the past!......
France were robbed First up Schmacher should have been Sent Off Maybe sent to Jail for his assult on poor Patrick Battiston if Schumacher had have done the same thing in the street he would be serving time. Secondly he blatently moved off the line before nearly every one of the french spot kicks in the shootout were taken!
This was one of those matches that you never forget. An absolute classic and this for me is still the best French side I have ever seen and should have got to the final. It would have been great if it was Brazil v France in the Final in 1982 as these were the two best teams by far in the tournament.
1982 WC - Italy - Brazil and France - Germany were 2 amazing games.. Shumacher should have sent off and France-Italy final would have been very entertaining one
You know fellas. I heard this match on the radio of a very old car, very good the battery was some charged. My TV was faulty and I was imagining all these actions. I can see now what I did not see 28 years ago. Thanks alexZr74.
@ShimshonHaGibbor Lol, that was an attempted murder, not just a foul. But France wasn't supposed to be a champion that year, but rather 1998, that's why we didn't saw Brazil play in that final.
@Crisstti It was a set-up game, a pact. Germany was third in the standing before their third game (eliminated) Austria was first and Algeria second. The Austrians made a deal with their Germanic cousins to let them win easily so they can eliminate Algeria and both go through to the next round.
@Crisstti According to the World. Even the spectators at the stadium were angry and booing...You can watch the match on YT. In fact, this is the reason why the third match of each groups are all played simultaneously in big competitions. The rules were changed because of that game.
They were booing because it must have been a boring game. Nothing you wrote proves in any way there was any kind of pact. No reason to think that it was anything more than Germany and Austria not wanting to take chances they didn't need to take. Of course, that is a danger in those situations, as FIFA noticed then and thus the rule change.
@Crisstti You fuckin cunt ! There's been articles and books about this event. Make your fuckin research instead of whining like a little bitch, you ignorant twat ! Hijo de puta.
@ShimshonHaGibbor Sure, that is why when I asked about a source, you said "the world". I very much doubt you base your biased opinion on any kind of reliable source at all. In fact, that you're recurring to insults shows your lack of arguments. You actually have a rather unhealthy anger about the whole issue. And unjustified. What is it, are you from Algeria?. I don't think Algeria were somehow wronged there. They had they're chances. Should have gotten more points.
@Crisstti No I'm not from Algeria. The reason I insulted you was because your denying something that is very obvious ! LOL It's like black on white. Algeria have beaten the German team (a big shocker). This is the most plausible interpretation.
@ShimshonHaGibbor Simply that you think it's the most plausible interpretation doesn't mean at all that it's a fact, much less an abvious fact. Upsets happen in football. It doesn't mean that they're fixed games. Plus, Germany had a pretty poor World Cup that year, and lost in the first knock out match.
@ShimshonHaGibbor You are the big investigator who has covered up the conspiracy. Germany was leading 1-0 and for both teams there was no more to do so they didn't do more.
I agree: Schumacher's foul was a total disgrace and he should have been sent off and banned. But here's something that, it seems, English football pundits just do not understand: Good goalkeepers have to be a little bit mad.
an incredible game. Who else but the Germans could come back having conceeded two goals in extra time? love the british announcers bias: French play for 'justice'. The goals by the germans in extra time were far more artistic and flowing than any of the french goals but you wouldn't know it if you just heard the British audio.
no pity, the germans had as much a right to win it as the french.games are won by strategy and concentration and not by emotions as in the germans had it and the french didnt
@CharlieSmigz Svhuhmacher Jumped for the ball, was with his legs targeting battiston, he turned in order to make less hurtfull. of course: a red card, and a long ban, agree. but i do not think it was with the attempt to hurt him. i think this foul became a myth. schumacher of course after the match made some stupid comments. BUT; HE APOLOGIZED AND BOTH BECAME FRIENDS. BATTISTON EVEN INVITED HIM TO HIS MARRIAGE. so if both sportsmen can forgive each other, why can't the fans ?
@mahvachcheidani a country that is responsible for millions of algerians and africans and vietnamese killed should be silent when it comes to nazism. Just thing about your fascist war crimes in the former french colony and then SHUT THE FUCK UP !
and when it comes to football, the equipe tricolore is a joke compared to our MANNSCHAFT
NO he jumped directly to kick batiston not the ball; this is proved; he never apologized and even if he did he should have been sent off and the french would have easily won; problem with you kind of guys is you take sport as battle as a fight; the beauty of it doesn't mean for you nothing you don't care; in this same way the beautiful hungary was beaten but unjustly by your NAZI germany
