i have 1 piece of advice about the cracking on the inside what i do about the tuning is i dont tune it immediately i havent tuned very many ocarinas but what i do is i make the holes in the air dry clay after it dries ya i know it doesnt sound like it would work but with a normal drill bit you can slowly use your hands to drill throught the clay it just leaves dust and no cracking works for me!
OcarinaTycoon's way of making the fipple method is a godsend! I first came through it via dunster's website but I liked OcarinaTycoon's vid because it showed clearly what needed to be done. Now that I have watched his video, I can understand Dunster's instructions better.
:p I guess I should clarify, it may not be new to others but at the time it was new to me!
I kinda found this way out for myself, quite some time before i joined the group! haha you can tell because I was still calling the voicing hole a fipple!
Yep, I also started experimenting with it, because I also thought that lining up a separate mouthpiece was lot`s of work. This method works nice for me too... it takes some practice, but it works quite nice.
Agreed! I found lining up a separate mouthpiece took more time and work. Once you had it aligned, it was difficult to keep it in the same position while fusing the pieces together. You obviously know, even the slightest change in that position could create drastic changes to the sound quality, which was almost guaranteed to happen in that process. So having eliminated that entire step helped avoid that situation and let you concentrate on the voicing hole.
I agree. I found it is much easier to make a separate mouth piece than to produce the mouthpiece in the ocarina itself. At first I thought this method was going to be tough, but when I saw it and tried it for myself, it is very simple (just takes practice though ^_^)
Im so impressed by that little thing!!! Its awesome!! Hope you let me the honor of getting one of your final real clay ones one day when your ready? Awesome work man! See if a Straw can help you cut out the fipple hole easier? I just got some proper clay in need more air drying clay and I'll start trying to make them too
I considered a straw as a punch substitute but I figured the straw wouldn't be big enough or strong enough. Maybe a jumbo slurpee straw....
And for sure! I've been interested in getting them out there into the world, selling and trading. I hope to one day have a reputable name in the ocarina community!
Hey, that doesn't sound bad at all. That's pretty similar to the way Robert Ogawa makes his ocs. Cool!
That was great how you managed to get your tuning, it sounds nicely in-tune with itself. Good job, man, keep going and you may earn yourself a reputation like Mr. Songbird :-D
Hmm... also, the brand of air-drying clay that I use is Amaco. I was able to obtain ten pounds of it for less than ten bucks, so that's a lot of clay that I could use for ocs for a while. I guess I can make another one this week, since I have nothing else going on, and plus I'm slowly getting back into making and playing them again as well :-)
Yeah that brands most likely better than what I'm using for air drying. I'm just grabbing a few packs at the dollar store. $1.13 for 500 g.
It's "Crafto" brand and it really is junk to work with. I'm suprised this ocarina held up.
One thing though. I don't know how to play it so I tried a few tabs and it sounds wrong. Way off. But it is in tune to go up scale right? Would you say it sounds tuned right? and the fingering patteren is proper?
10lbs for under 10 bucks definitely isn't a bad deal!
OcarinaTycoon, sorry for asking, but at my local craft store I think they sell the same clay you use. Its Amaco Air Dry Clay and it comes in white or terracotta. Its like 10 pounds for $7.50. Is this good clay to start working with?
It's a good clay, but don't get me wrong, because it dries a lot faster than ceramic clay does. If you are working on your speed, then have at it. (I paid the same for the same amount of clay). I suppose it would be safe to say that it is a good starting clay...
Hey man thanks! I consider that a huge compliment coming from you seeing as you're the guy I learned from originally.
Thinking about how I could build my speed ( I was spending 10+ hours per ocarina ) and improve the sound quality too, this came to mind but I think I originally saw something similar along time ago, so maybe it was something of his that was in the back of my head?
But hey, thanks tons! I'll have to check out Robert Ogawa too!
Yeah that's what I've been saying. I have a couple of ideas and after trying them all out I'll start feeling which feels best for me! & For everyone else who wants one of my ocarinas ;)

Such method has worked for me several times.

@Chichiri520 Everyone has they're own way of doing it :) Whatever works best for that one person right?
I think that once you've tried out a couple ways of doing it you're likely to find the odd little thing that you do to make it easier for yourself.
Glad to hear you're having success! It's a lot of fun and I'm hoping to start making them again sometime soon!

I was surprised how well a straw works if you twist it it cuts through smoothly.
I hope you reach that status too!!!! Keep it up!!
