I was directed to your fasion chanel by smokeypinkleapord and then found this channel. I love fashion and makeup, but i was also delighted to find that you had videos about Harry Potter and Doctor Who!
people can definitley be fashion and beauty gurus and love 'nerdy' stuff like doctor who at the same time! i really love what you're doing here so keep up the good work =)
I had no idea that this stigma even existed. I'm wicked excited to see what sort of videos you make though. I find most gurus I watch are pretty down to earth, but I think you're idea of sort of... hybdrizing the idea of fashion and beauty and intellectualism is a really good one. Good luck, Robyn!
Yes yes yes! As a guy, I've felt that "nerdy-only" stigma for a while and have thought about taking my longboarding videos many times. Longboarding simply isn't what people consider "nerdy". I love that you're doing this.
It's a good idea that you're bringing this issue up, I suppose there will always a stigma against anybody that dresses differently according to their social groups, including nerds. I will definitely be watching your fashion guru channel!
I created this little channel for book talks for my students. I had to change my comment settings where I could approve them before they showed up because I got a few horrible - foul messages regarding my nerdiness and about people hating books. Well, if trying to sell reading to kids as a positive activity makes me a nerd then so be it... but I hate the overall message being sent.
I think it was about two years ago that Blair aka Juicystar07 called herself a "makeup nerd" or a "makeup geek." I think that beauty gurus ARE nerds for makeup! We all like different things and there's no use for judgin'.
I like this, mostly because when Ingrid won NextUp there was so much hate flying around, and people saying horrible things about how she didnt deserve it and whatnaught. It was so stupid, because as far as I have seen, she is incredibly nice. I don tknow anyone personally so I cant be talking too much but still, I jsut think that everyone should be nice to each other.
I know exactly what you mean, I'm a massive geek and nerd but get massive weird looks when I talk about my music people go O.o Heavy metal is not what they expect from a nerd XD
I know that there are a lot of beauty gurus who are closeted nerds because they are afraid that their audience will not like their videos if they find out that they like Harry Potter.
I'm a nerdfighter, and I love watching guru videos. I'm not that into fashion. I wear a t-shirt and jeans basically every day because that's what I enjoy wearing, but I've always found guru videos fun to watch. I'm not that into beauty and fashion, but every so often, I do enjoy putting on make up or dressing up a bit. Not that often, but sometimes. I have no problem with gurus. I know of some that are also nerds. Many of them seem like incredibly awesome people, and they make awesome videos.
Thank you for talking about this! I am one of those girls who identifies as a nerd and a fasinista. I love my heels and other things as much as I love doctor who and reading. I am comfortable with this even when others think I am not nerdy enough or up to date enough in fasion. :)
Yea, I don't really understand the stigma against beauty gurus either. Being able to do make-up/hair/fashion is definitely an art form I respect, even if I don't choose to spend much time perfecting that art form myself. The only time it bothers me is when people who do choose to spend their time on that look down on me for not choosing to do so. Basically, I'll respect them if they respect me.
I think you're totally right. I'm a total nerd but I love watching beauty videos. So man y of the girls I watch are such lovely, confident, beautiful and genuine girls who don't hide themselves or their personalities, I think it's such a shame that there's so much discrimination against them.
@filibusterfirework74 Same here! I found out about Ingrid (missglamorazzi) because of Luke Conard and she's adorable, I love her vlogs. I ended up subscribing not only to her vlogging channel, but also to her beauty channel.
I think what it really is, is the fact that the fashion and beauty industry tend to show a construed and warped image of women and how they should look like and so that makes the entire topic of beauty and fashion as a shallow thing. I like looking fashionable (even though it does not happen often seeing that I'm lazy) but just like a stereotype follows nerds being that they are socially awkward, people that are into fashion are stereotyped as being shallow.
Thank you so much! I really hate stigmas of any kind, and though I personally am not a huge fan of clothes shopping or fashion, I'm fascinated by this incredibly fundamental aspect of human culture. I'm actually already subscribed to Whisperings&Stars, because I've always wondered about 'the other side', as you say, and I trust you to be intelligent and interesting.
I especially love your point about bravery in guru videos - it's important to remember.
I love that you have a beauty guru channel! I have never really watched beauty videos before but I have started to in the last couple weeks and I find myself liking them more than I thought I would! :)
Thoughts: the make-up industry tests on animals and most make-up products contain toxic, cancer-causing agents. We put harmful chemicals on our skin every day and wonder why we have epidemic incidences of cancer in the U.S. And, haul vlogs are disgusting
We need to break through the stereotype of what beauty and fashion is. I personally don't wear make-up and I am beautiful and I have amazing confidence. I wear and buy clothes that are functional and make me happy. i have no idea of fashion trends and to me, that is an irrelevant endeavor. BE YOURSELF! BE HAPPY!!!!
Nerdfighteria is about accepting everyone. I don't know how it has turned into being an elitist group where you need to like harry potter or doctor who in order to be one. I hope it doesn't stay like this.
I feel like we (as the youtube community) are in need of some changes and we need some discussion about it. But people are not really willing to discuss. -.-
Guru videos used to be totally disconnected from the "core" youtube community and they usually atracted different type of people.
And I ran out of the maximum number of characters so I guess I'll record a video response instead.
(constructive discussion while limited to 500 chars is not possible) :P
Robyn! You said you have PO Boxes, But you no have a PO Box anymore. Get one!!! I have stuff to send you that I have been collecting since last easter!!!! Love you!!! Phoebe
Thank you so much making this video Robyn. I've always loved watching beauty videos and my friend would made fun of me for it. I know there was a thread on the Your Pants forum talking about beauty channels and there was a select few of us who posted. I think it's terrible that some people think they have to hide their genuine interest in beauty and fashion just to feel accepted. I mean we all have other interests outside of the nerd realm and shouldn't judge someone because of it.
I'm so glad someone's addressing this. It's not just a youtube issue, in the "real world" i've received comments from nerdfighter friends about being "too intelligent" to go to beauty salons or to get excited over a new lipstick! Do our interests have to fit one specific category?! Most gurus i watch do not live upto the typical airhead image they've been given but are lovely caring women sharing a passion with others. Let's remove the stigma and accept everyone :)
So, I'm a butch girl in Nerdfighteria and beauty guru channels don't personally appeal to me, but I don't understand why other more beauty-inclined Nerdfighters aren't more into them. I love your ideas of bringing the communities together -- there are all kinds of beauty out there, and there's nothing un-nerdfighter-like about fashion or makeup or other beauty guru subjects. Of all the YouTube communities, I feel like Nerdfighteria should be the one to embrace beauty in all its forms :)
I am excited for this! I only really follow one guru, who I LOVE for not just talking about make up, but about being girls and the self esteem and social issues that come with it. I am really looking forward to seeing what kind of awesome videos you'll cone up with.
Well said. I read A LOT of fashion blogs and I'm getting into the makeup gurus. I never really thought that the two needed to be joined, I just thought that they were 2 seperate areas of my personality that I could just keep that way. Though I never hid that in my videos. I wear what I want and I ALWAYS do my makeup before I make a video.
I think there could be an interesting crossover here.
Great video. I think this is a nice idea to broaden the minds and encourage different interests in the nerdfighter community. Nevertheless, you've got me interested.
The 'outer nerdfighteria' phrase was intriguing. I feel like I can't say anything about this because I don't have enough knowledge on the full extent of nerdfighteria to conclude whether subsets like the one mentioned exist within.
Once I saw someone preaching on Rosi for posting Beautiful or Beauty photos on her tumblr, and she obviously said that it was her tumblr and she posted what she wanted. That made me think that every person has a world inside, and like the actual world you can find many things dramatically different between them: deserts, forests, rivers, oceans, fields, cities, farms... labels are wrong, and so are stereotypes. Us nerdfighters should know that better than anyone else. xo Robyn, I <3 your videos
I thought this was a fabulous video. I'm thinking about starting to vlog soon and was actually having a debate with myself about whether I should wear lipstick and high heels like I normally do or would the nerdfighters not take me seriously for it. This vlog reflects my very thoughts on the subject and I'm so happy to have found you today. I am definitely going to subscribe to both of your channels and I'm excited to see what is to come. It's absolutely crazy how our thoughts mirrored today.
As always branching out is a nice thing to do, and helps make friends and broadens a community, but I think Nerdfighteria is amazing for the fact that unlike the rest of the world it doesn't pressure girls into feeling like the aught to look pretty, which I think is a damn good thing. Our society teaches girls that 'pretty' is a price you pay for occupying a space called 'female' and having somewhere where we can get away from that idea is one of the best things about Nerdfighteria.
@frogswhatfrogs it's entirely possible that nerdfighteria works in reverse though. they're not as accepting of girls that -do- want to present themselves a certain way to the world sometimes, as robyn said, it makes people feel ashamed of being interested in that kind of thing because the rest of the community would see them as being vapid. nerdfighteria isn't about pushing away one thing or another. it's about being accepting.
The problem is that teenagers grow up with "rules" for nerds nowadays. They live in a nerd drawer and put all the other people in drawers, too. Even I watch a female beauty guru and I'm a guy who doesn't give a shit about make-up/fashion on girls. But she (@missglamorazzi) is smart, funny and beautiful(I'm still a guy^^). And I want to know something about everything.
It's okay to be superficial about yourself. But can you do without judging others?(idk) Most people aren't self-aware enough.
@firnantok superficial about yourself? i don't think that's worded very nicely. if somebody wants to present themselves to the world in a certain way because it makes them feel more confident to be themself on the inside rather than wanting to shy away all the time, more power to them. it's not superficial.
I agree with you. I consider myself a nerdfighter but I watch America's next top model, I'm subscribed to 2 guru channels, I LIKE shopping. However I probably spend more money on books than clothes in a year.
John Green shows that it is possible to deviate from the typical nerd interests with his affection for sports that he shares on his second twitter and Hanks gaming channel.
I believe that most nerdfighters don’t see you any diffrent because you have a guru channel. Maybee many will not be interested in it, but thats OK.
First of all thank you for making such a video if you feel that nerdfighteria excludes certain people or activities. I think of the nerdfighters as a very open and including community that does not rely on segregating others but builds on a common mindset.
I don’t consider myself a typical nerdfighter but I’m still a nerdfighter. We should keep in mind that nerdfighters can be very different from each other. (cont.)
A LOT of the fashion gurus are in fact those popular cheerleaders that bash nerds like us, and only in Nerdfighteria is it more socially accepted to make videos about Dr Who and Harry Potter than about makeup and clothes. The real world, sadly, doesn't look anything like that.
I think the problem is that relatively few fashion/makeup vloggers actually talk about confidence and things like that. I do watch guru videos every now and then, mainly for tips about hair, but what I often come across is that people either fill their channels with haul videos (which are REALLY boring in my opinion, and just a hidden way of bragging about stuff you've bought) or are focused on really expensive products that you can't afford anyway.
That is bullshit, having more guts to make videos about fashion rather than doctor who? What is more socially accepted in the world? Dressing up like a Dalek or dressing up like every other" hipster" gal or guy?
Maybe within Nerdfighteria more people can relate to DW but that is the limit to the preference of nerdiness in society
I'm all for building bridges and people making things that they are passionate about.. But don't try to turn a minority community (to the world) into a big bad.
@allison2811 wow okay. i disagree. who do you think watches original content more on youtube, "big bad"s or nerdfighters?
nerdfighters, naturally.
and ones like you have immediate distaste towards people that like to do things with their appearance, dismissing them as vapid when that's usually not true at all.
it's a terrible reverse case of the whole judging a book by its cover.
people are less likely to see someone doing a guru video as a person and more as a shell- that's why it takes guts.
I Don't dismiss people as vapid, I never said I did, you make the assumption because I defended nerds.
I support people making things they are passionate about.
But in the "real world" fashion is a more acceptable hobbie/interest, and Youtube/Nerdfighteria is a safe haven for people whose common interests aren't what is popular in society. It's one of the only places where nerdiness is prevalent and acceptable.
I Don't believe that you can't like fashion if your a nerd
Really? I don't know about you but, where I come from, I get way more funny looks for wearing Doctor Who or Harry potter propaganda than if I wore something from American Eagle. When I turn on the tv, or go to the home page of Yahoo, I see articles and hear people talking about fashion, Not philosophy behind HP or Steven Moffat's plot-twists. I'm speaking from real experiences of my own and people I know. I'm not making ignorant assumptions about a society that I have spent the last 19 years in.
@theloyalbadger Also, let me reiterate Again. I'm not thinking less of people because of their interest in fashion, I'm saying it is more common than "nerdy" interest.
I think this is a good idea cause I think it can also help those lost in the sea of channels find gurus that have real posive messages. I loved how to videos even if style is not my thing, so let us know if you need help with any thing.
OMG Thanks to you I just found out that I'm a nerdfighter. I don't know whether to be scared or relieved! Ironically enough, I care about how I look when I leave my place of residence and apparently it shows so much that friends, men and women alike (more women than men) as me for fashion advice. Does that make me a fashion guru too?
I enjoyed this! I think a lot of nerd girls (or in this case Nerdfighter girls) watch makeup tutorials and fashion videos but are a little ashamed of it because everyone sees makeup gurus as vapid or superficial. In reality, Elle Fowler, one of the biggest gurus on YouTube does book reviews on her vlog channel and missglamorazzi is an architecture student. There's more to them than just the fashion. This has actually kind of inspired me to start dabbling in guru-type videos...maybe. :-P
I feel like polarization in any community is extremely dangerous because 1, it pressures you into conforming only to the attributes deemed exclusive to that community, and 2, it suggests that members of a community are entitled to feelings of superiority. People tend to become so proud of being in one community that they refuse to accept that membership in multiple communities is rarely as contradictory as they assume. I was a proud nerd AND cheerleader in high school and I loved them both.
I didn't know that this was a thing to be honest. I've always been a nerd & I've always worn make-up and wanted to apply it with skill. I've always had a sort of retro/vintage fashion. I actually think it goes against what it means to be a nerdfighter to hand out this sort of harassment to anyone. If you get bullied at school by the sort of girls who might make a guru channel, all you are proving is that you are as small minded as they are.
It makes me think of Ingrid (missglamorazzi). She was basically just a makeup tutorial person but ever since she has been hanging out at Echo Base I've seen her super nerdy side too. I think it can be a good mix. :)
Thank you for making this video. This is a topic that isn't talked about. Thanks!

firnantok 4 months ago

DFTBA and sorry for the long post.

HelloMsAnny 4 months ago
I think the problem is that relatively few fashion/makeup vloggers actually talk about confidence and things like that. I do watch guru videos every now and then, mainly for tips about hair, but what I often come across is that people either fill their channels with haul videos (which are REALLY boring in my opinion, and just a hidden way of bragging about stuff you've bought) or are focused on really expensive products that you can't afford anyway.
HelloMsAnny 4 months ago
I fully agree with you on the not feeling like a Nerdfighter but I do know A LOT of them.
Great video Robyn. You fight that reverb and you win!
princeword 4 months ago
That is bullshit, having more guts to make videos about fashion rather than doctor who? What is more socially accepted in the world? Dressing up like a Dalek or dressing up like every other" hipster" gal or guy?
Maybe within Nerdfighteria more people can relate to DW but that is the limit to the preference of nerdiness in society
I'm all for building bridges and people making things that they are passionate about.. But don't try to turn a minority community (to the world) into a big bad.
allison2811 4 months ago
@allison2811 wow okay. i disagree. who do you think watches original content more on youtube, "big bad"s or nerdfighters?
nerdfighters, naturally.
and ones like you have immediate distaste towards people that like to do things with their appearance, dismissing them as vapid when that's usually not true at all.
it's a terrible reverse case of the whole judging a book by its cover.
people are less likely to see someone doing a guru video as a person and more as a shell- that's why it takes guts.
theloyalbadger 4 months ago
I Don't dismiss people as vapid, I never said I did, you make the assumption because I defended nerds.
I support people making things they are passionate about.
But in the "real world" fashion is a more acceptable hobbie/interest, and Youtube/Nerdfighteria is a safe haven for people whose common interests aren't what is popular in society. It's one of the only places where nerdiness is prevalent and acceptable.
I Don't believe that you can't like fashion if your a nerd
allison2811 4 months ago
Nerdfighteria isn't a bad thing, regardless if Individuals of that community are intolerant.
It just that in the grand scheme, fashion channels less likely to be criticized by the public than a channel about Doctor Who.
allison2811 4 months ago
@allison2811 i think you think a lot less of the general public than they deserve.
theloyalbadger 4 months ago
I'm not making ignorant assumptions about a society that I have spent the last 19 years in.
allison2811 4 months ago
@theloyalbadger Also, let me reiterate Again. I'm not thinking less of people because of their interest in fashion, I'm saying it is more common than "nerdy" interest.
allison2811 4 months ago
I think this is a good idea cause I think it can also help those lost in the sea of channels find gurus that have real posive messages. I loved how to videos even if style is not my thing, so let us know if you need help with any thing.

I couldn't agree more, I have had people tell me that I'm not a "proper nerd" because I like make up.
Effectively make up is another form of creativity, so I don't see why people have a problem with gurus.

I was a proud nerd AND cheerleader in high school and I loved them both.

... if you bash someone who is a guru.

InkyPages 4 months ago
It makes me think of Ingrid (missglamorazzi). She was basically just a makeup tutorial person but ever since she has been hanging out at Echo Base I've seen her super nerdy side too. I think it can be a good mix. :)
