I played this 8-track tape 30 some odd years ago, and still kicks ass, I own the cassette version, and will never get tired of playing it. Crank this shit full blast!
This is the best version of this song because 1)-obviously it's the original 2)-Got the best drumming 3)-the phaser in the middle of the song is killer 4) It's got the most polished production sound of all the versions and 5) Its balls-heavy for 1974....
I remember getting desolation blvd from my cousin when I was 13. I was a revelation. Not a bad song and all just fuckin amazing! Mega underrated band.
It's funny you mention Saxon, they do an awesome cover of this off the Crusader album. Coincidentally that cover got me into Saxon, since it was the first thing I heard by them, but I'd never heard the Sweet until I found out that it was a cover song by them. So, indirectly, the Sweet got me into Saxon, but Saxon got me into Sweet. It's like a Rock'n'Roll paradox.
I haven't checked, but if these motherfuckers aren't in the RR Hall of Fame, somebody needs to get shot. My dad turned me onto them (I'm 19), and I have rocked out to them for three years.
you can hear where Iron Maiden got there sound from lol Sweet influenced so many of the 80's 90's spandex bands it's unreal but still never get the credit they deserve
To clear this all up. Set Me Free was on the Sweet Fanny Adams lp which was released in the UK in 1974. The Sweets follow up lp was Desolation Boulevard released in the Uk 1975,,,,,BUT The USA version of Desolation Boulevard had a different track listing and Set Me Free was on there along with a few other tracks from Sweet Fanny Adams,,,but what ever,,,its a great song
@2112PDS it's so true, but not a clear-up tho. this is what chiromanic has being trying to make people understand using a clear language that even kids would understand. for some reason some people can't grasp the complexity of this info. :o)
@ollieahokas its on that album. thats the one i have and thats the one its on. whats with this? people telling me so and so is not so and so? maybe its on another album also? reissues? different releases in different countries? geee zusss fkn chrrrrist!
@ntheAttic Dude, you're missing the point. You're being urged to correct the wrong info because your info on origination is untrue!! This song IS from Sweet Fanny Adams, NOT Desolation Boulevard. The album you have is a DB reissue that BORROWED a song from ANOTHER album, it's not on the original DB . If I released a compilation including Set Me Free, some people may hear the song for the first time on my compilation. But it would still be untrue to claim that the song was from my compilation!
@Chiromanic im not intentionally misleading anyone. the album i have is desolation boul, im not a biographer of the band. im just uploading songs i like from albums i have. i appreciate people telling me when the song was originally released and on what album in which country,, but hey im not trying to bullshit anyone.
Set Me Free originates from Sweet Fanny Adams, NOT Des. Boulevard, even though it reappeared on a re-edition a year after the first release!! The song was just borrowed from Sweet Fanny Adams. You should correct this and change the album cover.
This song is actually from Sweet Fanny Adams and not Desolation Boulevard. The song appears as a bonus track on a US reissue but doesn't belong on the album per se.
@blorgensteen Yes you're right except it appeared on a later print of the album from 1975 (Capitol Records). My point was only that the song is FROM Sweet Fanny Adams, even if it was later used on a fifth edition of Desolation Boulevard.
@blorgensteen Yes tracking the real home of a song can be tricky with all these reissues and bonus track constellations. I hope the uploader of this video reads my comment so he can correct the error! :)
@WarcraftGuideCenter Yes I know what you mean, and I have felt the same way about other album reissues that meant more to me than the later found originals. I guess first impression lasts! :-) Here in Europe we were lucky enough to grow up with the original albums, which is rather like reading a book without shuffled pages.
This song totally kicks ass, Heathen (80s thrash metal band) did a great cover to this killer song, I definitely agree that Sweet should've been as huge as KISS, I always thought Sweet was superior to KISS myself
Yes originally it was the opening track on SWEET FANNY ADAMS but in the USA it appeared on their revamped DESOLATION BOULEVARD which actually was more SWEET FANNY ADAMS than DB.
da tanto non ho sentito questa rock band Sweet, cercavo ma non ho mai trovata, pero questi giorni mi sono rioscito. Be cosa dire mi e stata piaciuta 35 anni fa Sweet
i just want to say Sweet is so much better than Kiss. Sure Kiss have some good songs but they don't deserve to be that popular while Sweet is in shadow.

THIS ONE was my favorite, listen to the studio manipulation of the drums, and everything else, it is pure rock&metal, 4real this is early speed-metal --- this song, - not any of their other ones, although some come close....but this one...is so ahead of its time,,, and I was so fortunate to have had a older sister, that had a boyfriend that turned me on to this band when I was 13 back in 1975!!!!

All Albums from Sweet FA via Desolution Boulevard to Level Headed and Off the Record are fantastic well played albums
Sweet is one of the most underrated band around - They truly deserved better
Their vocal arrangements are better than Quees (who by the way stole a lot from Sweet)
Listen to the drum play of Mike on this number - very impressive
Listen to the guitar of Andy - many styles
Listen to the bass of Steve - only way he can play so fast is that he uses his fingers and not a plectra

Can see what you mean about Judas Priest, but the song this reminded me of was Sabbath's Neon Knights with Dio.
Either way, this stuff shows that The Sweet were far from just a manufactured glam act. They were a seminal band in the history of metal too.
