I think this performance is better than Vivaldi would ever have heard in his time. The advancements that have been made both in the production of recorders and in the technique of the players themselves provide for a truely amazing performance. Petri's interpretation here illustrates not only virtuostic technique, but also a depth of feeling that 'notes on a page' cannot fulfill.
It sounds so boring. :( watch giovanni antonis interpretation its full of life and you can FEEL the music !!!! its not as monoton as Michalea Petris version..THIS IS NO INTERPRETATION!
I fell in love with the second movement of this before I even knew what it was. It remains pretty much the most beautiful piece of music I've ever heard. Brava.
@armoniella Per the standard tradition of the period, most editions have the solo instrument playing the appropriate tutti part during the beginning before the solo part enters. In this case, she chooses to enter after the orchestra introduction is over

Lovely performance. How many times has Michala Petri played this piece over the years? Yet it's still fresh, intense and exciting. At the other extreme from Vivaldi, check out the new clip of her world premiere performance of Richard Harvey's Recorder Concerto. Truly modern music in a 300-year-old tradition.
Wow, that may be one of the best versions I've ever heard.
A lot of instruments are meant to be tweaked as time goes on, or for different movements in the same keys. Most of them play a little sharp or flat depending on what the piece calls for -- not like a piano or a harp, where you play equal temperament period. So sometimes they tug on the thing to "tweak" the tuning too, like a violinist sharping a high note slightly to make it sound a bit brighter.
This is remarkably beautiful. I grew up listening to her music and to "find" her again makes me remember all I had missed for all these years. This ought to be her signature piece if it isn't already. I don't know of anyone who plays it as beautifully as her. It literally brings tears to my eyes every time I hear it.
A remarkable musician no doubt, but I fail to see see the suggestion of feeling in music over mere notes when compared to Antonini. I should say his performance is one of vigor and character whereas this is comparably sweet and plain. To speak of 'music' versus 'notes' as fgkfriz seems rather backward to me.
beautiful and amazing. I checked this out after having heard giovanni antonini's same piece on youtube, but michaela's is much smoother. Listening to her music i see drops sliding gently down smooth glass (but with a ver positive feeling). You don't hear single notes, you hear music.
@fgkfriz I may be wrong, but it appears that the 2nd recorder is smaller than the 1st. I would assume that the particular movement is pitched higher for the instrument, so it is possible that a smaller recorder would meet those demands more effectively.
@fgkfriz My guess is she changed because her first one got "watery", or whatever the correct english word for that is. Suppose it had 18 C in the concert hall, that means the recorder has 18 C (or thereabout) and now she´s breathing in, her breath haven 36 C. A small film of water builds itself in the wind channel, and as this goes on, the music just stops.
Or you have a second recorder, switch, let the old one dry, switch, and so on. Every recorderplyer, myshelf very much included does this.
my music teacher told me 2 check out this video i have 2 get my red, white, and blue belt !

Real PERFECT PERFORMANCE, nothing to say, who could? Really do not understand who can have voted 4 dislikes... no comment.
I think Vivaldi would be very proud of this performance, probably exactly performed with the intent for which he composed this concert

why does she start after the orchestra? I've seen the score, and recorder part starts with the orchestra's one.

Why does she change recorder at one point?
fgkfriz 2 years ago 17
She probably changed recorder to make sure that it would not clog right in the middle of the concert. Recorders tend to do that...

I implore you to listen to Stefan Tremmings version. It is absolutely awful and I am so glad that British recorderists do not play like that!!

@fgkfriz I think she changes recorders because the first have is in C Major and the Second half is in the relative minor!
