  • Oh for heavens sakes guys, its a dumb camera mic and a practice amp. Jeez, do you people not know the difference????? Do you really think that Petrucci has changed his tones to this quality? The guitar is obviously rock solid if this man plays it, he knows when any aspect of his sound changes, and knows exactly what element contributed to that change. Even a cable, as he once said, he will know what changed the sound just by how it sounds. You folks make me laugh, and shake my head.

  • Compared to his on-stage tone, for back stage showing off a new model, you have to admit - it's not that bad...

  • it's a small practice amp that's why the tone sucks...it's only reasonable he's backstage for god's sake!!!

  • the tones bad because its sped up...

  • the tone's bad because i think its not mic and directly into the cam

  • the tone is horrible

  • He plays at the mark 5. Mark 4 is really better!

  • @buvarpen92 He's not using the Mark V here. He's using a Mesa Express 5:25 combo.

  • it sounds like a fucking harvest fly!!!

  • Comment removed

  • probably sounds like crap because he was probably using a crappy small practice amp to warm up before the show

  • me No like hahhaha ...... the first JP model was a great guitar also the tone is really bad...... i ´d reather the one with the scoop shape ..also i dnt know but it looks like ,john is trying to make an ibanez shape with a Music man head stock ..

    whatever he´s frikin´ gud...

  • 1:07 "I had been playing a basswood guitar with a maple neck FOREVER, and I was just ready for change". He just admitted he is God. He lives FOREVER.

  • On the background is Paul Gilbert))

  • He didn't want his wrist hitting any wood...

  • his tone sounds like an Eric Johnson type tone

  • Since when were Formula one cars easy ti drive?

  • How much better does a BFR sounds than a normal one? It seems like we can't really tell from this video.

  • hes playin through 2 10 watt marshalls

  • listen to it fuckin scream though

  • WOW YOU SUCK

  • is there a big difference between family reserve and normal jp's`?

  • Why is it called bfr? What does it stand for?

  • BFR stands for Ball Family Reserve, it's a little more "exclusive" version of the guitar.

  • @snemul I prefer to think of it as an abbreviation of BEEFER

  • @stonedparyah Clever ;)

  • it means Ball Family reserve. These are the reserve models the handbuilt out of the best parts.

  • fatter ? PURE MUSCLES MAN...

  • That opening lick was quite Cliffs of Dover, no?

  • @Ollievarium no.

  • jajajaj cliff of dover j ajajaajjaja

  • Questo s'è totalmente dimenticato come si suona la chitarra.

  • Per come ha suonato in questo video devo purtroppo concordare con te. I bei vecchi tempi della Ibanez sono quelli che sono, e io l'ho sempre detto.

  • Io sento Hell's Kitchen, Scarred, o i vecchi live tipo Tokio, ecc... e dico come cavolo è possibile una tale involuzione melodica.

  • my role model

  • Nice guitar!

  • petrucci---> GOD

  • Whata piece of shitty amp. :x

  • that was the worst tone ever!!

  • fucken tone!

  • great guitar, great playing, shitty amp.

  • still have the old one and love it

  • holy shit .......do i heard scit scat wah in the background..FUCK "YEAH

  • this is absolutely not his normal tone

he has one of the greatest tone of history

  • @jack0eagle not even for that guitar. The EQ must not be authentic.

  • No wonder there's and F1 in the name of the guitar model. It's Petrucci, you know.

  • I have a trans black BFR Petrucci, its the best guitar I've ever played.

  • wow...thats so not his tone...probably an shitti backstage amp for this short demonstration...

one week ago when i met him during his guitar clinic he said that the uses mesa boogie mark IV...and they sounde god damn sweet...

  • I think he's upgraded to the Mark V now.

  • yeah right...i missspelled...he used mark V

  • This video is 2 and a half years old.

  • Does anoyone honestly think with those pickups, the huge amount of distortion, and the delay, that in anyway the wood makes any difference? It absolutely does not- at least what's perceptable to the human ear. You could mount thosepups on 2 by 4s and it would sound the same.

  • I like Petrucci but I can't stand his tone

  • jp is not jezus like its john the baptist. everybody makes allways that mistake. For the rest he is a (guitar) god!

  • TØRRkjeks! men en dyktig en=)

  • I'm getting one of these in a few months =D

  • I guess he chooses to play at 6 million bpm sometimes, but when he does, small villages in asia are annihilated.

  • love this guitar JP is awesome and jesus like :) dunno if thats a statement of his guitar playing

  • Gytarok, Your Mom is a whore ;)

  • yea

  • the sounds is because the mic volume on the camera is up too high, therefore the sound is clipping and creating that annoying sound

  • that's what I thought, too

  • i dont like the sound in this video, but i've got a JP6 and i love it so i bet this JP6 BFR F1 is the mutts nuts

  • Its not the guitar, no matter how bad an amp is it will never sound good. So its his amp that he is using

  • I don't like the sound.

  • that's because he's playing on a measly little amp.

  • Never mind. I don't belive that's the only amp he had. He is a pro. right?. I like his work, that's the reason why I don't like the sound only.

  • just a practice amp. theyre for dressing rooms, not the stage.

  • Look: he could do that in studio or anywhere he can get a great sound. On this clip it's anoying.

  • i see what you're saying, and i agree. but he doesn't have mesa's in his changing room at a venue. plus it could also be the camera. bottom line: the sound is annoying.

  • That guitar is insanely awesome

  • 5:25

    damage control riff

    JP god!!

    xd

  • 3:50 ....these two center coils

    KILLZONE MODE

  • big body guitar for his big fucking metal arms!

  • Interesting changes. Mahogany neck & 'tone block' in the body, Maple top - dual humbucker with the new pp pot. Sound like he made it more like a Les Paul than before. But that's just my observation.

  • What the hell is wrong with his tone in this video? You'd think for a guitar demo they'd have gone for something nicer than that hahah.

    Good playing as always anyhow

  • what do you expect? you can see it's filmed by a road tech or someone with a camcorder and he's probably playing through a 15watt practice amp or something.

  • i think hes just in a practice room backstage and usually most musicans just have something to make noise backstage where when he or any guitar player is on stage they have their main rig and their signature sound

  • I believe there's nothing special wrong with the tone itself. If you listen carefully, you hera a strong digital noise thoroughout the video, which may be coming from a poor camera, awful digitalisation or hard video compression, etc. This is exactly the reason that all basses say good-bye and high-mids are boosted like hell. Oh, and on the other hand, as you hear, this is a basswood guitar, and tehy are known to have less basses and more mids...

  • Too much highs to my taste, anyway, great coil selector system

  • haha paul playing in the background

  • That's a pretty shit tone... really good playing though. Gotta love John

  • agree

  • I'ts the bad quality of recording man.

  • I have rosewood neck in my guitar and I must admit that it's the cheapest shit ever

  • This guitar is fabulous! I love the body and the changes they did to make it more comfortable. The DiMarzios makes the high tones sing and the lower growl.

John Petrucci has had a lot of recent experience playing the D Sonic on his 6-string guitars. The D Sonic combination of clean and heavy that works so well with high-gain amps for both chords and soloing makes a great choice for a 7 or 6-string bridge pickup. The body shape makes it easy to reach the high notes and the headstock is genius.

  • F1 *shreds* you caught me off guard Mr Petrucci

  • the body is now bigger cause he was getting bigger!

y'know so as to be in proportion! ;)

  • I can't wait for adam02 to do a parody of this...

  • haha. i can't wait for the chaos in progress dvd material of adam02.

  • DREAM THEATER

  • RULE!!

  • HARD!

  • Comment removed

  • was this guitar also painted by michael angelo?????

  • Yeah but not that guitar noob.. the one who like painted jesus on the ceiling and stuff

  • I agree this tone is pretty much shit for him but I know what it usually sounds like so not judging off this vid.

  • love his playing, hate his tone.

  • that was a pretty stupid thing to say. obviously this isn't his normal tone. either you're deaf or this is the first time you'v heard him play

  • that was a pretty stupid thing to say, obviously you're a fanboy or you would realize the tone he had in this video sounded horrible whether it's because of the camera or what it was shit.

  • so i guess it didnt matter when i said "this isn't his normal tone" never said it was good, but that it wasn't normal for him

  • BEST GUITAR PLAYER EVER!!!

  • He really is.

  • In Norway, this guitar costs at its lowest 6000$! O_o

  • Actually, in the US, you can get it for around $2600. But are you talking US Dollars or some other type?

  • Nope, im talkin about US dollars dude... In Norwegian kroner this guitar costs about 42000 kr.

  • much more expensive in Norway:(

In dollars you've have to come out with like 5000-6000 if you buy it in the stores..

Therefore we buy from the US:P

  • his tone sounds so thin and crappy! kinda like the guy under me said.

  • cheap way of getting a petrucci sound is a mesa triaxis pre running 600 bucks. then run through a tc gmajor multi effector 300 bucks, bada bing

  • sounds like a cool guitar.

He should have played it through a "real" amp though.

I'm guessing he plays on a small 15 watt, cause it sounds so thin.

  • The body is bigger cause my biceps are bigger and with de old JP model, i couldn´t play...my bicep mute the strings

  • haha, nice one:D

  • I chuckled.

Hi, this is John Petrucci, and my new guitar BFR F1. Let's see..

    *FUCKING FAST GUITARSHRED EIFNEOIFNFNSGNOGENIGNGAENONG*

    Heh, buy it ;)

  • foda essa pegada....

  • I don't know why JP doesn't just play a PRS Custom 24 already?! PRS would make a killing with a "PRS JP" signature model.

  • that would be great having one of the world's finest guitarists play the world's finest instrument.

  • for those who didnt understand what hes trying to say, ill try to translate:

"hey guys, this is my new guitar....bla...bla...bla... BUY IT, BUY MY NEW GUITAR"

but i forgive him because he is amazing guitar player and because i just love DREAM THEATER.

  • Yeah, definitely.

  • Wow, what a repulsive tone.

  • It's really odd seeing big guys like JP and Paul Gilbert playing insane guitar riffs with small guitars. :p

  • you can hear gilbert in the background!!!! sweet !!!

  • No wonder john needs a bigger guitar body, i mean look @ the size of him!! Hes clearly getting bigger. lol

    Btw, which bridge is that??

  • Why don't he use a full mahogany body....

  • it'd be too hard to swing at someones head lol

  • that's why, so he won't swing that kind of masterpiece to someone's head. I don't think petrucci swings guitars to others.

it is better for him to play his guitar rather than to use it to hit someone.

Would be even better if he give that for me for free lol.

  • My guess is that he was searching for a certain tone and look for this newer version of his signature model. I'm sure he researched different woods and this was what gave him the tone and looks he was looking for.

  • One thing, if he use straight full mahogany for his guitar, he will get a neck-thru construction that will give him way much more sustain. It's what i'm thinking of. Full maple would also work :-) haha

  • I have the pickup that he has in this guitar in my Washburn MG30. It's a Dimarzio D Sonic. That pickup is just the best if mounted like John has it in his with the bar forward. With the bar towards the bridge sounds really dark to me.

  • daaaaamn

  • i have a first edition john petrucci BFR its a serious guitar,id like one of those guitars too

  • Basswood is pretty inferior IMO...it's cheap cuz it's readily available and companies love it as it's easy on the routers. I prefer mahogany and alder tonewoods

  • inferior how? Basswood is prefered by many guitarists because its tonal quality is pretty flat. Not overly bright or dark. sits right in the middle.

Its no 'inferior' to alder or mahogany, just cheaper.

  • "IMO" meaning IN MY OPINION. Furthermore I'm not the only guitarist who doesn't like basswood. It's not a bad wood, I just don't like using it for anything other than shred as it naturally accentuates midrange frequencies, and has a weak low end.

Petrucci can get away with it though, but then again, he has a big expensive rig.

  • i got that guitar..

  • How do you like it? I have the pickup that he has in it. Love the D Sonic!!!!

  • what did he have as the neck pick up?

    a dimarzio what?

  • Its a slightly modified Air norton.

  • amazing guitar... to me the best in the world...

  • the secret is the time machine jajajaja

  • muy buena.John Petrucci is GOD

  • sounds like Paul Gilbert in the background... Awesome.

  • Holy crap, I have the 7 string BFR and I didn't even know about the push pull pot.

  • how much is this guitar, with piezo and everything?

  • 3400 I believe, list is 4200 though

  • I'll just stick to my squier strat... 150 $

    LOL!

  • Nice improvements. I never liked the "scoop" on the body. I still prefer a maple neck though...

  • he SHREDS!!

  • HOLY MOTHER OF PEARL! THAT TONE IS SO FUCKING SWEET!!! i have the same pickups minus the piezo and its on a ibanez so if i change my strings to fresh ernie balls can i get this tone? im using a peavey bandit 112 amp

  • Strings don't make such a drastic change in tone. A good set of strings and the right gauge for what you feel is best can help you play a bit better and sound slightly better but I wouldn't say that a different set of strings will give you a whole new tone. Also, what makes of your tone is subjective, the guitar you use, the woods and pickups in it, the tone from your fingers, the tone from your amps etc. very subjective, but if you like the tone here he is using his practice rig I believe.

  • His practice rig is posted on his website under gear, its the small rack with a Mesa Boogie express combo and whatnot.

  • Can you please tell me what his practice rig is?

  • Like I said, just go to Petrucci's website and go to the gear section, the small rack with the Mesa Express in it is his normal practicing rig, however he may not have it here since its the G3 tour and not a DT tour. But just go to his website so you can check out pics of everything.

  • get a boogie mark 4 and since you have the same pickups you will have 95% of his tone.

  • really? sweet. how much would one of those cost? but isnt he also using an express 5:25? how much are those? Im only 16 so im trying to find out if the cost is so much that i will have to find a job. lol

  • Can I ask a question about your comment? You say that if 92arifE11 gets the same amp and pickups as Petrucci, he will have 95% of his tone. How will he have his "tone" instead of just the same equipment? Not an attack, just a question. Thanks.

  • the tone is simply produced by an amp and a guitar, set aside the effect units for the moment. If you have the same equipment and the same settings then you get the same tone, as simple as that. the rest 5% is the dynamics and details that each player adds to his tone so it would take a lot of practice to adopt Petrucci's style of playing and technique to get to that 5% remaining but the rest 95 is pretty much easy to get if money is not an issue.

  • Thanks for the great and thorough explanation. Although, unless you get a chance to get an up close look at his setup, you're not going to know his settings. Does he alternate different settings depending on songs and venues they are playing at?

  • Every guitarist has to change his settings during souncheck at every differrent venue due to the fact that the sound interacts with the enviroment around the amp and the characteristics change. However he never changes settings during a gig, he uses the same basic lead settings and clean sounds but on different amps, the road king and a lone star. Its not hard to get to his tone provided you have his equipment. You start at a flat eq, everything at noon, and you change accordingly

  • Man,thanks alot for your replys. I am truly learning ALOT from you. I love this kind of intelligent interaction. Most people get insulting and childish when someone tries to exchange ideas and opinions. Thanks again. I do hope we can exchange thoughts and ideas more often.

  • No prob brother, anytime. PM me if you need any piece of advice and stuff...

  • Tone comes from the hands. EVH can plug into any amp, with any guitar, and he'll always sound like EVH.

  • that's not tone, that's style...

  • As DizzyZack said, tone is in the hands, effects just color it. EVH, Vai, Satriani, Petrucci, Gilbert, and Buckethead have all used different guitars, amps, etc. and their tones sound almost exactly as they do now.

  • what that top switch for pizo or something?

  • yup :3

  • good playing but his tone is way too trebly

  • he's playing through some little practice amp i'm sure.

  • i'am agree with you

  • That's the fifth switch in that guitar and it's only been around for about 2 hours:P

  • He is amazing at what he does.

    Do you not appreciate talent?

  • yes, because this is the only kind of music petrucci plays.

thank you for assuming that a single demonstration encompasses this artist's entire scope of talent. Petrucci effortlessly combines feeling with technical shred. Saying that a guitarist should rely on either one is almost as retarded as declaring Gilmour superior to Petrucci.

  • This is the necessary response that I was too hung over to think of myself. thanks for posting it to the idiot comment made above.

  • ahh you are soo annoying

  • cliche much?

  • i want that ..................... BAD
