The loneliness of a middle distance runner is someone waking up from their unhappy soul to go towards the happiness that is only by that train. He stops the race and looks around, i've left the stage you've seen it now. the train to happiness that we had to pay the guard(corporate America) to let us go through. this song is about america. The railway ticket says we could get to happiness but it takes people getting on that train that the buisnessman tries to sale to us that we don't care about.

@Carena722 I don't think it's quite so literal as that with a business man selling a railway ticket... He makes use of multiple metaphors, not necessarily strung together to form a narrative. Also, they're Scottish, not American, so I doubt it has anything to do with corporate America.

@haiiro999 I know that they're Scottish and pretty much all their music is based metaphorically. but you can bend their metaphor in this song to relate to America is all I'm saying.
