Hearing this and Cherry People’s version back to back, CP’s seems overproduced; this has a certain crispness and clarity that really comes through. I have always thought this song could be in a Broadway show, the lyrics and structure seem to suggest it. Wonder if Michael Brown were composing in an earlier decade, would he have been scoring theatrical productions? Different than pop music, but even more demanding - tunes must be memorable and have a great hook - his greatest strength.
Heard Pretty Ballerina on a cable tv music station. I was shocked that I had not heard it before since it was such a lovely song. I went on youtube and found more songs and just wanted to say that it was a great music find for me.
This song was a minor hit in 1968 by a group from the Washington, DC, called the Cherry People. I didn't know until many years later that the song was originally done by the Left Banke. I have to confess that I prefer the Cherry People's version.
This is AWESOME!! Why in the world did The Left Banke think it was a good idea for Bert Sommer not to sing lead on every song?! He's SO GOOD!!

This version is way better than the minor hit cover by The Cherry People.
