If your knees hurt afterwards, you're doing something wrong. Change it up next time. If it still hurts, give it up. Your body will thank you when you're 40.
They're doing it wrong in the video, im taking the NLS course right now and ure feet should always be turning counter-clock wise so that you catch maximun tread.
At the 15th second of the video, the video is playing backwards (rewinding), which is very confusing and misleading if one tries to find out how the legs move.

Egg beater is bloody hard. I learned to swim less than a year ago and the last time I went swimming I tried this. Needless to say it all went to hell! The tips in this video clear things up quite a bit. Will try cycling backwards next time I'm in the pool!
@CopperheadTM i learned to use eggbeater a few moths ago i just learned to swim i figured f-it learn the eggbeater, what helped me alot is i took a noddle a floating thing put it under my arms it was just enough to keep my head above the water i would do the eggbeater to get myself a bit higher out of the water. i did that tell i got the proper form, once i was able to do it for 30 min i threw away the noodle and worked at it on my own.
My water polo team captain is helping me with this. She said it took her a month to get it right. So I'm like: but. but. that's like, half the season! xD
failed my water rescue course b/c of this. :(

What makes this method of treading water better than just doing flutter kicks in a vertical position, while sculling with both hands?
Does this require less energy?

@Oldskool97 You just need to do it way faster. It is tiring at the first weeks but youll get used to it.
And also if you know the attack position ( Your hips up and egg beating slowly) you can pop up.
You do this by bring your knees to your chest. Scissor kicking, and pushing down with your hands.

for 15 minutes of treading, definitely. there are other techniques in case your out on the ocean, but i hope you won't be needing those.
