the false starts meant bailey couldn't start as well because he didn't want to risk disqualification, his time would have been better probably around 9.79 maybe lower
@omatosigns, I doubt that. Bailey was not on a warning (everyone was allowed two bites at the cherry back then, remember) so there's no way he'd have been deliberately sitting in the blocks. He just wasn't a great starter, and never had been. His start here was average, but for him it was the norm. See how he won gold at the '95 World Championships, or how he NEARLY chased down Greene in Athens in 1997. Great sprinter was Bailey, but I'm not quite sure he had a sub 9.80 in him.
Man, Linford had shaken hands with just about every sprinter in that race during his post race lap, and ran straight past Mike Marsh. One Olympic Champion to the next and that's how Linford does him. Mike Marsh is so underappreciated.
I used to love going to Donovan Baileys house with my family when I was little used to be bestfriends with his daughter their house was amazing. Their theatre room <3
@flenny Yes you are right that he was born in Jamaica but all of his training was in Canada by Canadian trainers and no one can deny that! Just a thought! have a good day!
AMAZING times between 9.84 and 9.90 back in 1964 bob hayes ran 10.05 in tokyo on a peice of shit wet chewed up DIRT track, in a prelim he ripped off a 9.91 with the wind just over legal but again on same crap dirt track and before the age of 22. if hayes would have been able to run on the synthetic track and the altitude of mexico city 68' he would have run an UNGODLY time, hell even at altitude on this modern track
@Dami3n06 thats not right. false start means if u start faster than a human normally can react. the tolerance for that is 0.1secs set by the iaaf. but one start actullay was right and called back. the 3rd false stard made by ato boldon so i believe he normally had won the race
I was 11 years old when this happened, and I remember watching this on TV with my family. When Donovan had that terrible start I remember thinking "oh no...." and then he just blasted to the front and won. I was jumping around all over the place screaming.
It was such an amazing moment as a Canadian to watch him win.
Would have been nice to see Christie finish that race, imagine if he had finished and won, he would have been 36. 30 freaking 6. And oh, he did react at the B of the Bang.
The Jamaicans and the Americans are like gazelles. It would have been nice to watch the 4 fastest BORN Jamaicans race with the 4 fastest Americans from their era. Jamaica 1) Usain Bolt- O. Champ 08 2) Linford Christie -O. Champ 92 3) Asafa Powell 4) Donovan Bailey - O. Champ 96 America 1) Carl Lewis -O. Champ - 84, 88 2) Tyson Gay 3) Justin Gatlin -O. Cham 04 4) Maurice Greene -O. Champ 00 Notable: Leroy Burrell, Shawn Crawford
@NotAnAmericanIdiot2 lol gatlin isnt even in the top 20 of the fastest americans andthe fastest 3 jamaicans are bolt powell carter and someone else mybe bailey i dont know. the fastest 3 americans are gay lewis greene and burrel.
THis was wonderful,i woke up at 3am to see it(and recorded it with my first VHS recorder)...3 false starts, worst start ever and still won in a world record time...amazing
who's the commentator that wished Fredericks would win on behalf of the DQ'ed Christie? she should get a real job.. that really made a whole lot of sense....good summary by buddy at the end though, as to have records broken in a race where 100ths of a second decide a few spots, the wr still fell after numerous false starts. Sorry LINDFORD you have to start when ever the gun goes off, not before.
I was all of 7 years old when this race was run and I can still remember sitting on my couch with my family and watching Donovan Bailey winning, it was such a great moment, one most Canadians will remember forever
best form since carl lewis, d bailey..would have liked to see him and bolt go at it as both have scary top speeds..of course those times mean nothing today but at this level you tend to run according to the competition, so yes, if you put bailey in top form today against bolt i think that would be something to see..
Agreed! This would have to come first, followed by the hockey win of '02 and the hockey win of this Olympiad. The men's relay of '96 has to be there somewhere. I'm sure I'm obviously not doing justice to any Canadian Olympic feats that came well in the past (I think Harry Jerome was a great olympian, among many others), but the ones I've stated are my own personal favourites!
@ElJoeyJojo -- This is a solo performance, not a team sport. The 100m Olympic final has a LOT more pressure than an OT hockey game. Not to minimize Crosby's goal, but this was much more significant. And it was a World Record, come from behind victory. And the 3 False Starts as well, and He won this on American soil!
The Day Canada Dominated the Track Fields! Well done Bailey, Canada is still Proud of him! truly a memorabel moment, especially the suspenseful beginning!!
At the time, it was the most tense 100-metre final ever seen. I remember Linford being disqualified, leaving, then changing his mind to watch the race instead.
One of the staff thought he was about to create a disturbance. She kept on saying to him "Linford, don't! Linford, no!" to which he replied "I juss wonna wotch the wayce!". All on camera.
@sondog42 call me crazy if you want but im fuckin sure bailey was capable to run a LOW 9.7 here in atlanta!!!!! of course without the false start, the christie "drama", and especially if donovan had a much better start!!! the track was insanely fast(almost fast like the beijing track),great sprinting weather,etc.. fredericks would run a sub 9.8 too in my opinion!!!
the image of his victory celebration with mouth open and arms at the sides are memorable. Although I am a huge Bolt fan, this races seem to have more 'soul' to it because everyone seems to have a chance. Nowadays, it is Bolt against the clock
Another Jamaican export again.Jamaica's loss canada's gain.Ben johnson(jamaican) well jamaica's loss, canada's disgrace(cannot have it both ways).Christie(jamaican), Ato boldon(mother is jamaican) and michael green. There were 3 1/2 jamaicans in this race.
