  • This the kind of singer and song that makes me glad I was born male.

    THAT'S A WOMAN!

  • She also played the character - Nurse Dixie McCall - on the television show Emergency! (in the '70's). Even tho' I was only 10 or 11 at the time, I found her speaking voice to be quite fascinating. I never new she was a "torch" singer until about 10 years ago!

  • The greatest female crooner of all time! How a cheesy kid like buble dared to cover this song?

  • Now your'e talking Buble is nowhere. Julie has made this her own.

  • Who on earth is playing that jazz guitar? It's quite different from the regular single - really adds to the soulful breathy vocals. So sad! Excellent posting.

  • @StonyRC

It's Dennis Budimir, the guitar player of the Bobby Troup Quintet. On the regular single the guitar was played by Barney Kessel.

  • What was the movie, where this song was ? i Remember, i saw the movies years ago...

  • The Girl Can't Help It

  • I've been listening to this great song since Julie first sang it. No one sings it better ! She was the greatest chanteuse of her day !

  • I love her version of this. Eat your heart out Susan Boyle... cuz you'll never hit the nail on the head with this song.

  • @teddygirlalice Are you for real? First of all Susan is not the type of person who wants to get anywhere riding on the coat tails of another singer. Eat your own heart out tga, because its 'a a thought that would never occur to S. B,

  • Nice. I love Streisand's take on this too...completely different interpretation. Sign of a great song when many artists can do his/her own take on it.

  • @billyboylb I so agree with you. In my opinion, Julie London really owns this song, but I hope the day never comes that when someone else does it I won't listen. to see what they do with it.

  • Awesome version. Thanks for posting!

  • wow....now that is the way to sing that song!

  • First heard this song way back in 1985. Still gives me the goosebumps. Love Julie's version ever since.

  • Can't thank you enough for this video. Isn't Julie just great? aand so are you!

  • What a wonderful smokey voice. So in tune no matter how delicate the note. thank you for posting.

  • Imagina!!!!!!!

  • I think I prefer this even to Julie's studio version, you can hear every little nuance of her voice and it makes my hair stand on end

  • I'm agree with you, this version is better than the studio version.

  • Fantastic voice.

  • this what im talking about. watch Susan Boyle sing this saying she didn't do justice on it. you can't beat london singing it.

  • grrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrr.........It gives me goose pimples.

    Amazing interpretation.

  • wish i was born in 1960s...then i was killd by her lovelly voice hahahaha

  • Listen to how Julie uses her breath to punctuate her lines at about 1:53 on..........it literally curled my toes.....if she did that in my ear I'd probably fall to the floor in a quivering ecstatic orgasm!!

  • It's amazing how Julie's simple but sexy rendition sounds so much better than the modern "Divas" with all their vocal gymnastics and glory notes!

  • Great voice, & ohh, soo sexy. Julie had it all, & manged to be very modest about her success. We'll not hear the likes of her, ever again. Wolfsky9

  • Totally agree.

She had class and a sexiness that hasn't been equalled by any present day singer of any music style. Her voice...my god, absolutely perfect.

  • My 1st piece (playing the piano, in my youth-days) in the world of cool jazz. Wonderful performance. Brava!

  • She was an incredible vocalist!! Had no idea how gifted, until I stumbled upon an old episode of Emergency and then youtube. 25+ albums? I can still remember my mom performing this song at many venues! Didn't realize until now that both she and Julie had quite an influence over my singing style and ability! Wow, Julie was undeniably hot! Thanks for the post!

  • Only ever saw her perform in THE GIRL CANT HELP IT...these clips are phenomenal...have been listening to her on CD and LOVE her but these performances take you to another level...thanks Vladimir so much for posting these!!!!!!!!!!!

  • So so gorgeous and sexy. She along with the other Julie ( Newmar ) were the queen's of sexy.

  • I agree. Sadly, that's a bygone era in this age of silicone, nip-n-tuck, and hedonism. Back then, ladies who sang & acted for a living had a fuller figure and both the carriage and manner of a lady, even if it was all show. There is so little public decorum these days. Everything is so "in your face".

  • timeless......both the song and Julie's voice

  • Does she remind anyone else of Jessica Rabbit?

  • this is how to sing

  • shes good!

  • She's pretty much the definition of sexy. so damn fine in every single way. btw why do we have lame people like lady gaga now and not babes like this

  • she's definitely queen of the babes. Why do we have lady gaga now and not something like this

  • Just gorgeous and sexy ! I think a lot of the movie stars from her time were sexier too, but no one was like Julie.

  • i love her so much ! thank U

  • What a woman...and quite possibly the best interpretation of any song I've heard...

  • And God created woman - and boy - what a good job he did!

  • This is my absolute favorite rendition of this song. Seconded only by Ella Fitzgerald.

  • wow!!

  • No one--but no one, ever did this like Julie did. This is what Torch singing was all about, & she was the queen . What a total babe she was. Wolfsky9

  • such a soft voice..

    love it :]

  • Senasacional...Demais... Thank you..

  • Very best!

  • Thank you so much! Excellent video!

From this play list I'd say you generally have great taste :)

  • She's spectacular. No one, I mean NO ONE can sing this like her, I've seen/heard dozens of covers and nobody puts as much sultry emotion in this as she does.

  • Makes me sad, But i can't stop listening....

  • that gave me goose bumps but then it always has...........wonderfull

  • C'est merveilleux de voir Julie London chanter cet air ! Merci 1000 fois !

  • One of my favorite songs!

    She is wonderful!

  • beautiful song, splendid woman she was,sad memories (sorry for my english)ciao...

  • did she realise how great she was?

still got it .........after many others trying this song

  • Awesome. nice version . voice sooooo coool...

  • Great blues song---Julie London style

  • Fantastic I used to lust after her when I was a hormonal 13 year old particularly because of that record. And now when I look at the video I can see why, she's gorgeous looking with a gorgeous voice.

    D.

  • wow me too n im a chick

i listen to her record every week

    loove it :D

  • That is one sexy voice!

  • Never tire of listening the the amazing Julie, unique sumblime voice which takes me to another place. Love her!

  • There's such beautiful understatement in this version. She really gets the song across. Stunning.

  • A M A Z I N G ! !

  • I love the accompaniment....I always thought this song was deeper than Ms. London interprets it. I see it more as a Medea revenge piece.

  • Fantastic! This one should prove that she is a one in a kind singer!

  • WOW

  • Dios que voz!

  • Where to start? She owed everything to Liberty Records, which gave her the showcasing Bethlehem hadn't and which respected her talent and her intelligence. She never had much confidence in herself as a singer but Liberty had total faith in her. And it paid off. She made a fortune for the label with a long series of brilliant albums with the best arrangers and producers. Her album covers were unlike anyone else's. She was a genius in her way but never could acknowledge her greatness.

  • Julie's torch song! She was flawless top to toe

  • A unique husky-contralto voice. A big departure from contemporary Diva belters. Diana Krall has a husky-contralto voice too, when she sings on the same pitch. Diana is quite versatile as she sings jazz and play the piano, at one octave higher.

  • Jessrama asked where is this wonderful music today? I could gleefully argue that alot of it is being done today by Canadians: Diana Krall, Molly Johnson (get her newest album!) , Holly Cole, and kd lang (whose album with Tony Bennett is to die for!).

And there are many others who are coming up in the ranks. So the music is there - you just have to know where to look for it.

  • Just fenomenal!!

Thank you por posting this recording!

  • as a sax player its great she is rediscovered for her singing talent by people who may not know........

    one of the gang xx

  • this is absolutely haunting. just flat-out incredible.....

  • All those years as a kid I watched her on Emergency and had no idea she was a singer. Decades later I discover that fact on You Tube. She was simply AWSOME. I just can't hear her voice often enough.

  • Julie is another sad case of an extraordinarily talented Jazz singer that never actually believed it, herself. In spite of strong encouragement and many efforts by influential 'connected' people, to have her pursue a career as a Jazz singer, she wouldn't even try it. because she highly under-rated herself. Briefly, she made a lot of excuses as to why she wanted to stay in focus on her acting career, which never went very far anyway.

  • All I've ever known Julie London for was her role on "Emergency" (I'm 42 years old) . I never knew she had such a fantastic voice and singing career prior to acting. These videos of their gig in Japan are great! Thanks for posting.

  • Sultry, sexy Julie London stands the test of time.

  • Susan Boyle's version is on a par with this. But Julie london is soooooo much more fuckable.

  • Well... I agree with the first part of your statement. ~!

  • Wonderful! Just shows what can be done with ONE camera, Two Guitars and a truly wonderful singer! If only we could move back to this type of production. All that multiple video cuts with multiple cameras is just rubbish!

  • Thank you for posting this! What class! Today's singers should watch this-- they could learn a few lessons!

  • Ooh... I'm dreaming that I'm in a different era...this woman has star quality, the voice AND the looks!

  • I have all my fathers original albums on quality vinyl in storage, many by Julie London but I never listened to them. Always thought she was only a stage act. WOW, was I wrong!??

First class and right up there with Sarah and Ella. Where can we find a beautiful femal singer like this today? Have seen Diana Krall live and up close once, a small pub in Toronto 1996. That is about as close to a real beautiful female jazz singer that we can experience today. -Mark, Artist-Astronomer, Portland Oregon

  • Rare is not adequate to describe this, its historical. Ella Fitzgerald was supposed to sing this in the movie Pete Kelly's Blues, but it was rejected (God only knows why 'cause the decision makers are all dead) . Julie certainly had no problem with it.

  • The character of Ella in the movie was a singer of the 20's, and the producer, maybe in a certain racist manner, asked the composer to substitute the word

"plebeian" in the lyrics, because he was sure the audience would never believe that a black woman would use that word in the 20's. The composer refused to do it, and the song was rejected. In December of the same year (1955), Julie London recorded it, and in 1956 performed it in the movie "The Girl Can't Help It", in timeless renditions.

  • An interesting footnote is that 'Pete Kelly's Blues' starred Jack Webb, who was married to Julie at the time.

  • her voice is so rich and beautiful. very much gifted.

    5/5

  • What a sensual voice!!!

  • agreed with bmwsitgez.

Late Discovery here too. LOoooooooooove the song and the woman looks fabulous.

  • What a woman, what a voice. Perfect. 10/10 100% Total.

  • this is great :)

  • A great lesson of singing: less is more! A real example of good taste! Thanks for this video!

  • Wow thanks

  • Thank you so much for this song!

  • Even her name is magnificent - Julie London.

  • Wow, what a (late) discovery!!!!!! Fabulous, absolutely FABULOUS!!! Many thanks

  • Natural talent - one awesome kind of a voice.

  • Natural talent - one awesome kind of a voice!

  • Wonderful Voice & Feelin!!!!

  • a masterpiece

  • So cool. So sexy. They really don't make them like this any more.

  • The greatest torch singer of all time at her very best. If this song doesn't touch your heart, you must not have one.

  • I was thrilled to see this clip of the greatest torch singer of all time, singing one of her very best songs. They just don't make them any better than her. Thanks so much for sharing this very rare vid.

  • a goddess

  • lovely

  • beautiful!
