As i can see it wasn't chrome so it wasn't the big versions of the PS3s, versions like the 40 gig and the other little versions of the fat you could activate this fan by holding the eject button as you turn the power button on the back to the ON position...
This is actually a good thing. If the fans speed is higher, its moving more air out of the back. If you didn't notice the ps3 gets very hot within 4 min at just bein idle. So it is not broken learn we pc gamers can controll the fan speed of our graphics cards to prevent overheating, yes it may sound like a mini jet but we know its not overheating. I also have a ps3 btw.

my fan procces 4 mins after turning on my ps3 the right fan turns low 12 min later it turns medium 30 mins later the left fan turns medium it sounds loud but not that loud is that normal my ps3 is one year old

well mine had like exactly the opposite problem. i played in the moring, then paused the game, turned the controller off, and i left the ps3 running till lunchtime.. it was soo hot, and i was curious so i measured the temp, 63.2C!! I dont know how that happened i wasnt playing on it it wasnt doint anything, the fans were going.. oh well i just ignored it and it works fine ever since thank god!
If your warranty is up..it's gonna cost you 150 bucks..you might get yours fixed but most of the time you'll get a refurbished system with a 90 day warranty..I think if you still had the warranty when you have a problem..the original warranty is still good along with the extra 90 day one you get with a replacement system..I could be wrong though

like a mosquito sound seriously i aint lying, put ur ear close to ur ps3 after u switch it off from the back and listen to the ps3 it will make a mosquito humming sound for around 30 sec (you have to put ur ear heaps close to ur ps3 front)
You should not play with a Ps3 that is making that much noise, mine did it all the time when i was playing Mgs4 and it just kept switching of when i tried to switch it on. So i had to get a second.

The fan kicking in doesn't mean it's failing. Mine did that and I put it in a more ventilated place and it stopped. All it's doing is making sure it doesn't overheat.
