  • Isn't 192 the sister of Tweetsie RR's 190? Didn't the both come from the Yukon?

  • I LOVE BALDWINS!

  • who is the maker of the train engine? How old is the Train?

  • It was built by the Baldwin Locomotive Works in Eddystone Pn in 1943.

  • for southernRR4501. . they use 5 tons of coal and 9,000 gallons of water a day in one engine a double header would be too much . besides what is the point .double heading was used for heavy loads. never entended for show. it is a waste of coal and water

  • @sctgresham they don't use 5 Tons of coal a day, believe me, there is still half a load of coal in 70's tender at the end of each day, or more! the water thing, I also am pretty positive they only use about 6000 a day.

  • @sctgresham WELL EXCUSE ME FOR BEING A TRUE RAILFAN, WHICH OBVIOUSLY YOUR NOT!!!!

  • oh ok thanks

  • cool were is it?like state,town????????

  • It's in Pigeon Forge Tn.

  • is that at a theme park?

  • Yea it is

  • I would love if they had a railfan weekend. maybe a night photo shoot at the top of the mountain/depot/engine shops???

  • Awesome rail slip at 8:42!!

  • common man blow that whistle!!!!

  • It would be neat if they set up a railroad museum at the top of the mountain and the train would stop up there for a little while if people wanted to go through it, but I guess it would be too much of a hassle. They should do a double header for a nice railfan weekend.

  • I agree, I have always wanted to see a railfan day or weekend at dollywood.

  • yea it would. I have written dollywood about considering doing a railfan weekend and I recieved a letter saying that the park would consider doing one in the future. Also I have heard that they might be running 2 engine sometime in the future if they ever get 71 fixed. So if anybody who would like to see a railfan weekend or any of they other things I mentioned write or call or email dollywood and voice your opinion. I have found that to be the best way to handle things.

  • this is one hell of a steam train, we actually have one like this in Queensland, Australia, Ac16 221a, it was leased to Queensland Government Railway during ww2 and bought after the war

  • Yea I know, they were built on the same plans. I would love to go see it in action some day.

  • The only difference between ours and yours is that ours has spacers between the driving rods and the wheels to make it 36" gauge....I think that's the only difference.

  • Oh by the way, the wheel slip is at 8:41.

  • You Know I used to remember their being midway through an inride show at the old cabin up in the mountains where the engineers would dress up like bootlegers and shake their butts at the officer and the officer would shoot his gun in the air. Why did they ever stop doing that? no replys

  • that wasn't the engineers because i was in the cab almost every weekend and the engine crew was there too

  • Ehh, well your wrong. They did have a show where some of the buildings are set up half way through the ride and it was the train crew. I remember watching it in the 90's

  • well they must have changed the show becuz I remember the train crew doin like 1 show in about 96 and then they changed it

  • I went in 94, so it could have been different then

  • yea probably. I have tried to get them to do it again becuz i know all the workers that work on the train even the crew

  • It would be really nice if they did, but the ride itself is still great anyway :)

  • true that :D

  • I grew up in East TN and have riden these trains for years, but it made it SO much more special when riding on a train with my two grandsons.

  • And the best sounding whistle too!!!

  • Nice wheel slip at 8:42.

  • Didn't DW used to detach their engines from the cars and back the engine alone (tender first) to the rail yard (instead of backing the entire train like they do in this video)? Was there a reason for this? Does anyone know the status of 71? Pictures of restoration, etc?

  • I don't think so, there is no passing track for the engines to back up without the train. I went there in 97 I think and they did the same thing.

  • I guess I wasn't clear. They detached the engine - moved it forward past the switch and reversed the engine to the railyard leaving the cars in the station.

  • Anyone else notice that 192 looks more like a 70 class than a 190 class?

  • They look almost identical to me.

  • I have to agree.I am a loco engineer at Erwin,tn.for Csx.I also worked on the Western Maryland Scenic RR on on the 734,brkman hostler fireman etc.I known the boys at DW for at least 10yrs including Olge who is no longer there.I was there a couple of days ago 70 is down for a tube job and patch on the backhead of the firebox.Hope it will be out next year.Fired a love both of those locos.Have a happy New Year!

  • Thats the way I understand it anyway.

  • Hey Deck! That north end makin' an ole man out of you yet? lol...! Mike Holler at me sometime.

  • I was at Dollywood in May, August, October, and November and #192, Klondike Katie was runnin'. She's really pretty at Christmas time cause she's covered in Christmas lights. Her whistle sounds so beautiful!

  • i was fortinate enough to get to ride in the cab of this engine, and talk to the engineer and firman, not to boast about myself, but it was only because im an engineer on the six flags st louis steam engine, the Tommy G Robertson. The engine crew that day was just awesome. I had a blast there that day!!

  • i rode in it last night

  • You and anyone else who puts their name on a list gets a cab ride, if the right tender is being used.

  • sorry has been awhile since i have been that way by the sign. But a website does say that dollywood owns 72 and is in storage. I just thought that it was the engine by the sign.;)

  • and they are also restoring number 71. if they wanted to they could restore 72 which is the one by the main sign on the highway. it looks to be in pretty good condition last time i seen er'

  • The engine at the main entrance is #107 not #72, it is a standard gauge locomotive and could not run on there track.

  • Dollywood scrapped 72's chassis in 1999, and everything above the chassis was scrapped after the 1969 roundhouse fire. There's nothing left to restore. Any clue why it's taken 30 years to restore 71?

  • but they are making more progress than they have been on 71.

  • about up until like 2004 they used to rotate engines like every other weekend. I would go every weekend literally.

  • Nice engine with a VERY nice whistle.

  • Usually the switch the engines every season, depending on which is in better condition. In the past 5 years, I have seen #70 running once, and that was the year before last. I went twice this year. The first time, the train wasn't even running, because of firebox problems or something like that, and the second time, in July, #192, of course, was running.

  • Personally I was glad to see 192, I had just been at Tweetsie Railfan Weekend 2008 where they celebrated 190's 65th birthday. I live in Florida and I hadn't been there since 04 and that time they were running 70. I will post that footage soon.

  • Wait a second, I WAS THERE SEPT. 8th!

  • Where were you standing at 4:40 and &7:18? I go several times a year, but I've never seen those crossings.

  • i used to get rides in Klondike Katie all the time because i knew the engineer and about everybody that worked on the angines

  • Very good work. I like Klondike Katie (#192), but my favorite is Cinderella (#70). I miss #70 being in service, she was the only one you could take a cab ride.

  • #70 should still be in service. I got 2 cab rides in #192 but none in #70. I went in late May but the whole line was down. I don't know why. I plan on going soon

  • #70 has been down all of the 2008 season for boiler repairs and there is a question as to will she be ready for the 2009 season.

  • all they are doing is replacing a sheet in the firebox. I rode in the cab of 192 last night.

  • I remember when they said it was down for awhile. I'm friends with one of the musicians at Dollywood and he said the train didn't run for awhile.

  • Excellent, great work! Was the park crowded during your visit? Long lines for the rides?

  • No, it wasn't very crowded. Thanks.

  • ya i asked then engnear when the other loco #70 wold be running and they said in about 1-2 years[boiler repars]
