  • They day I was born! ;D

  • The good old days...........

  • Oh, and I almost forgot that the Nashville Predators, Columbus Blue Jackets, and what the heck, Dallas Stars (Texas and hockey don't mix) are also wastes of NHL space. Ties and losers always getting zero points were things that never bothered me and thinks the NHL should bring back! Oh, and dump the instigator rule and bring on more fights and less cheap shots!

  • Let's put it this way, the Atlanta Thrashers, Carolina Hurricanes, Florida Panthers, Phoenix Coyotes, Anaheim Ducks, and the Tampa Bay Lighning are a waste of NHL space (regardless of what cups some of them won since 2004). I loved it when the Blues first whipped out their loud air horn for their goals in 1992, but now it's just cheesy when every team has a "goal horn" today. Oh, and don't get me started on PA announcers that hype up the "Power play!!" Real hockey fans know what one is!

  • bob cole is a brodcasting god....he calls a game better than anyone!

  • I miss playing the Leafs.

What a great rivalry that we've been robbed of. It is a crime against the fans of the NHL that these two teams don't play each other at least 4 times per year.

Instead of moving the Wings east, which will never happen. I propose spliting the conferences like the NFL and MLB do it so it's fair travel for everyone. 2 Conferences. 3 Divisions consisting of West, Central, and East in each conference. Put 3 Original Six teams in one conference, 3 in the other.

  • Corporate Arena names & the UGLY styles of the jerseys are two FAILS in my book. The NHL is not what is used to be, despite what Bettman says

  • The Wings need to be back in the same division as the Leafs.

  • @CMUBrent That would be nice; but the Leafs should still be in the same division with Les Habitants. Perhaps have the Wings, Leafs & Habs in the same division or something. Well...Detroit & Chicago are huge division rivals as well though

  • Y'know what else bothers me? Hockey fans still living in the 1990's; "the game was better back then..." It's STILL great now. "All hype"? It was all-hype BACK THEN too! You complain about advertising, shootouts, rule changes, & on & on...like everything else in life, you evolve with the times. Don't you get that? This ISN'T the 1990's anymore, it's 2010 now. It's the wave of the future. Do you not understand or something?

  • Just blow up the NHL now & start it all over because you have about 10,000,000,000 more things that you hate about hockey, correct? The league should just die off & never come back again, what about that? If you don't have advertising or sponsers, you don't get ANY revenue. Plain & simple. That's why they have the advertising on the boards now. Get over it!

  • In fact,. you guys just plain HATE hockey now. Why not just fold the NHL once & for all, would that suit you now?

  • You guys hate EVERYTHING in hockey now, is that correct?

  • one of the best hockey series ever. but go habs go.

  • Some great players here - Yzerman, Andrechuck, Foligno, and even Ciccarelli. Fun stuff.

  • Remember who won the cup that year, Go HABS Go!!!

  • The crowd was a lion to wake up during this magical time

  • I remember it was my birthday at that time

  • i dont know why mr burke didnt offer a 2 yr contravt to sundin for like a million a season i bet he would had taken it, i remember the tampa bay lighting giving dave underchuck and winning a championship litte things like that get u to be a real contenders for a cup but they r playing 3 grinders in the line up and they wonder why they r not winning

  • This was Game 3, a laugher. But Game 4 was really close, I think it ended 2-1 for the Leafs.

Game 5 was a phenomenal game, with the Leafs coming back from 4-1 in the 3rd to win on Foligno's OT goal.

  • I don't know if it's just the way they used to broadcast the games back then, but it seemed the fans were a lot more into the game back then compared to now... I mean sure the Leafs aren't that great right now, but thinking back to their last good run in the early 00's & it didn't sound like this. Plus Bob Cole wasn't as senile as he is now LOL.

  • real fans cant afford tickets.

  • Lemonhead, you are absolutely right! Great point.

  • are you saying rich people cant be real hockey fans?

  • no but if you watch leafs games the seats closest to the ice are constantly empty. which happen to beyond expensive.... and if u look closesly u can see a lot of them wearing suits when they finally sit down.

  • Man, the NHL was more intense and had more speed back in the old days.

Gary Buttman really screwed up the game today!

  • i was 9 years old then and remember when the leafs dominated..we need a comeback like this in 2009-10

  • Leafs rocked back then

  • this is when hockey ruled now with bettman and too many rules NHL has lots its edge and excitment boring now wendal gilmour love it!

  • i think the maple leafs have a chnce of going to the playoffs and the detroit res wings wining the stanly cup who agrees

  • detroit getting through the playoffs no def, but not a chance for the leafs

  • Who would think in a mere four years the Wings would win the Stanley Cup, and the Leafs?...........not so much.

  • The amazing thing about this series is that it went 7 games. The Wings were a good team, but they didn't have shit for a goalie.

  • I wouldn't say Chevaldae was shit for a goalie. Don't forget the Wings finished with 103 points that season. We just had firepower... Wendel, Dougie, Andreychuck, Anderson...

  • He would be run out of town the next year.

Oh yes, it had to do with the goaltending, without a doubt. They would get their man in '94 in the Chaisson-Vernon trade.

It was apparent that Potvin gave in a seven game series like this (that was decided in overtime) that he was the slim margin of difference.Just as the Penguins won in Game 7 by one goal, it is a slight margin of difference, no blowout, but a victory nonetheless.

Ironic that Detroit had their goalie all along (Osgood)didn't know it.

  • I had a love/hate attitude with Chevy...He always seemed to make the imposible save followed up by a beach ball bouncing by him...Just seemed to have little to no consistency...Was 1 of the last "stand-up" styled netminders whom relied on their positioning, and glove hand.

  • I agree.. well put. but also, he did have a great season with the Wings that year. he did go 7 games after all against the Leafs and finished the season with his team having 103 points.

and as for your words about him, I felt the exact same way with Andrew Raycroft!

  • this was the leafs year to win the cup !! only to be majorly fucked over by that S.O.B fraser ! I still HATE that fuck'n goof to this very day !

  • i dont get that at all. how i detroit in the western conference but when you look at the map Detroit is in the East. how does that work out. that would be like putting the Ducks in the East next year.

  • Detroit is in the West for gate revenue. That's it, there's no other reason why we're in the West.

Gary Bettman was on WXYT 1270 Detroit about a year and a half ago. His BS answer was "Detroit fans wouldnt appreciate being taken away from their rivals, the St. Louis Blue and Colorado Avs."

No Detroit fan thinks of the Blues as a major rival. Nor the Avs anymore.

The Avs were a rivalry because of the names on the back. With the Wings/Leafs its a rivalry because of the names on the front.

  • I agree with your post. way to go.

if I can say one thing, I would also say the Wings are in the West because both Conferences need 15 teams, and unfortunately, Detroit is right at the border. If another team enters the West, you can bet the Wings will be moved to the Eastern Conference.

  • DAMM!

Y Cant The Leafs Play Hockey Like This Anymore? The Goalie Is Amazing!

  • I'm in agreement with others here in that it's BS that the league keeps the Wings in the West.

The Wings/Leafs should meet a minimum of 4 times a year. It's a crime against the great fans of the Wings and Leafs, and fans of the NHL in general, that they don't.

I miss this rivalry. I miss the days where you'd take the train or the 401 between the cities for back-to-backs.

  • so true. i would love to see the leafs play Detroit more often. too bad bettman fucked the nhl up.

  • Yep. True hockey fans HATE that idiot Bettman.

Let Canada lose two teams on his watch. WTF? That's a travesty to go from having 8 out of 21 teams. To 6 out of 30.

But that's what happens when you hire a corporate NBA guy instead of a hockey guy. He was David Stern's protege. It explains everything.

  • The Finals SHOULD have been Leafs/Habs. Winning this series really gave Toronto momentum. Only to get screwed in game #6 against L.A.

  • who do u think would of won?..toronto or montreal?

  • Great Rivalry, and an Awesome Building. This was another tough playoff series to lose, being a Wings fan. I was at game #7, thank goodness I have better memories since to ease my pain. I love watching games that were played at MLG, Olympia Stadium, The Forum, Boston Garden, Chicago Stadium. Saw at least one game in each. Love Bob Cole's announcing too.

  • you said it. i sort of wish i was born in the late seventies so i could have been around to watch all this. Back when it was only two divisions per conference, allowing fierce rivalries to be born... when there not as many rules and penalties so players can stay aggressive... and back when problems could be solved with not cheap shots or bad hits, but with a good ol' rockem sockem ass whoopin. Bettman ruined the NHL. if someone ever replaces him, that person should put it back to the way it was

  • read below first

Remember the Wales and Capmbell Conferences? Naming the divisions and conferences after the founders of this beloved game is a costum other sports should have followed, not vice versa.the beautiful sweaters that made up the Norris and Smythe divisions, along with the Patrick and Adams divisions were so perfect they should still exist...ALONG WITH THE OLD PLAYOFF FORMAT!!! If it aint broke dont fix it!!! hey bettman - this is why they say that stupid quote, i miss that tradition

  • Im from Nassau County, Long Island NY. As of 4/23/93 this was a Norris Division rivalry and im betting it was a damn good one! Around the same time the islanders were playing the caps in the Patrick Divion playoffs, this was around the time i started to get exposed to hockey...i started to watch the islanders cause they were in the playoffs and were fun to watch, then i asked my dad what fan he was and said RANGERS ;| that was that...after'94 it was NYR for life! long story short...

  • just hearing the fans just makes wanna punch bettman! This is hockey!

  • Put Detroit in the "Eastern" Conference already.

  • eunicron: Yeah, they are in the east. But, Detroit just might dominate that conference. The Western Conference is a stronger Conference.

  • i know it was just funny how the announcer said it

  • "detroit leads the series ofcourse" lol what a statement

  • Detroit lost that series

  • The greatest playoff series I ever saw. Next to that, Edmonton/Dallas in 97.

  • Any real hockey fans know this was an awesome series and appreciates it as so regardless of who wins/loses the cup.

  • thee good ol' days

  • Big win tonight Boys good game Go LEAFS Go....

  • I was at this game... and the next. The Leafs were totally deflated by the first two games... and nobody thought they had a prayer. They had been totally outclassed by Detroit.

    And then it turned.

This night was electric... as was the next game that I went to as well. AMAZING!

  • 93 was the last great hockey season.

  • The crowd sounds great in the audio.

  • Comment removed

  • Wow these leafs do Get Sulky!!

  • Gilmour just came into my work not long ago.. it was pretty cool.. i got to make his food :)

  • Felix Potvin was the greatest to watch growing up. I met him at yorkdale mall when I was 9 and I told him that I wanted to be a goalie just like him, and he told me to always focus on school first and signed my hat two cards and my t-shirt. The trip to yorkadale was a surprise from my cousin who double rode me on his bike and he didnt tell me that felix would be there. I was so surprised. A memorable summer day in 93

  • The good ol' days, where there were less penalties, and you could get away with hooking a little bit.

If the NHL continues with new rule changing, hockey is going to go to shit. You touch someone on the hand with your stick, your going to the box, I just mean wtf.

  • Wow Toronto actually playing decent instead of being the shame of the Canadian teams. Wonders never cease.

  • Leafs were good

  • obviously. Leaf fans these days are stupid. Every team goes through good and bad times. They were up to the quarterfinals back in 02.

  • Obviously, you are stupid too. The Leafs got to the semi-finals against Carolina in 2002. Get your stats right.

  • Previous posting directed at: uncleletmeexplainyou

  • Thats what I said bigmanard. A 30 year old man with nothing better to do but argue useless points.

  • hows this 4 an alltime leaf pesk line....tucker, gilmour, and dick duff

  • Those were my boys.

  • The Leafs were maybe good back then... but still Montreal won the cup :P:P:P

  • I bet the Leafs (also the whole NHL) misses guys like Wendel Clark!!! Whoa.

  • the good ole days

  • back then when the leafs were good and there was apassion from the fans and players those were the good old days

  • Wow look at Gilmour fly.

  • when the leafs was good

  • Great hockey memories!

  • See Wendel Clark go after Keith Primeau? Dude was fearless!

  • Damn Gilmour was good...

  • 450 career goals, 964 career assists, 1414 career points. i would think so

  • You know, it's really unfortunate that you don't see hockey like this anymore.... The NHL was the perfect size back in this era, before they expanded the league and tried to put the game in non traditional hockey markets....

I love the Detroit-Toronto rivalry since the fans get into it so much.... It's just too bad the Wings and Leafs barely see each other anymore and you don't see hockey like that anymore...

  • The Wings need to be in the Eastern Conference so they can play the Leafs and Canadiens more often instead of Nashville and Columbus. Unfortunately, that will probably only happen with expansion or an East team moving west.

  • Tim Cheveldae...he was pretty good in the regular season, but just couldn't get the job done in the playoffs. And it didn't help the Wings defense wasn't that great.

  • Is it just me or does the the ole Garden roar louder than the ACC? I watched these games at Cherry's in North Bay and the bar was just electric.

  • I must agree on that one when watching games from the past. I always had a better audio feed from games shown at the Garden than anything at the ACC. Sometimes, I find it ridiculous seeing how dead it is at the ACC: the fans don't get it in the same way it was at the Garden.

  • It was just a better game period back then...its all hype now...Arenas with stupid-ass corporate names, shit-ugly uniforms except for the original 6 teams, advertising all over the ice and boards, hardly any 5 on 5 anymore with all the lame penalties, Eurostyle shoot-outs, boring reg season schedule format, teams placing ahead of others with more points just because they won in a weak, Div, WWF-esque PA announcers, cheap-shot hits from behind..no real rivalries...outrageous ticket prices.

  • well said man...the game was much better back then...much more exciting to watch too. Too many rule changes in hopes of making the game more appealing to americans. Let's face it...americans like their baseball and football better for some reason...leave the game alone already

  • @ldhorricks Geez, you make it sound like the game has gone to hell in a handbasket for God's sake! It's still great to watch. Is there anything you WON'T complain about now? Why not list another 200 things you hate about hockey now, how 'bout it?

  • The ACC is full of suits. It's pathetic. I was at game 7 vs. the Kings at the Gardens and let me tell you, the place was ELECTRIC.

  • I say the Rangers and the North Stars play in 88 and the Garden was amazing. A couple of years ago a friend of mine won tickets to the Av's/Leafs game when the buds weren't that bad and he said that the ACC's atmosphere was more like Rogers Centre than the ole Garden.

  • Rofl..Wow I think this is kinda funny..That was my birthday :)

  • lol, what the heck is Tim Cheveldae doing starting in a playoff game? No offense, Chevy!

  • poor leafs fans. i'm not insulting them. it's just sad to see toronto not even make the finals since 1967 even though they fans are so hockey rabid. so sad. won't happen next year either

  • yay dino!

  • "Great save Potvin!"

  • Thanks for uploading this tjackson76. It brings back a lot of memories.

  • Who is this play-by-play commentator??? I hear him all the time but I have never known his name!!! "Oh Baby!!"

  • bob cole...CBC's head commentator

  • This is Cole in his prime. He could really build the drama and his goal call is the best hockey has ever known.

  • Nice find more of the playoffs 1993 vs kings and 1994 vs canucks please

  • grrrrrrreaaaaat!
