Got to be honest here - I used to have the records as a kid and playing this had me talking the words out loud - I must have listened to the records so many times...
I am so pleased that you put this onto YouTube - Thanks
Yep, it's a Sonovox, NOT a Vocoder. See the 1943 mystery movie, YOU'LL FIND OUT, to hear much more with the Sonovox, and see it work. Also check out a good book on synthesized speech: "How to Wreak A Nice Beach" ("How to Recognize Speech", get it?) by Dave Tompkins.
I STILL HAVE THE REORDS 3 IN A SET THE FIRST TIME A VOCODER WAS USED(VOICE CHANGER) SPOTTED THE RECORDSIN A JUBLE SALE YEARS AGO AND THOUGHT MUST HAVE THEM THINK IT COULD BE USED IN A HAPPY HOUSE TUNE NANAJAN
What memories I have of these records. I'm 66 now and I used to play these when I was about 6 or 7. They were an inspiration to me and I almost had the words on these records memorised. Is it any wonder that I turned out to be a music teacher and concert artist.
Im now in tears ... In the school breaks my grandmother minnie played this for me when I was little. She had to do it when Grandad had gon to bed after his shift at work & we all had to be quiet. I remember sat in front of the coal fire. The turntable was in the front room with a wire going into the back of the wireless in the kitchen/ back room. we had to be so good to listen because the wireless was in the back & we should not wake Grandad. x
@palexandersquires Yep, it would have been done on a sonovox (a primitive version of a talk box) in those days. I believe they also used one earlier than this in Dumbo (Walt Disney) as the talking train.
well as fun as it was to re live this. i must say i found it as disturbing now im 25 as i did when i was 3 or 4. and still freaks me out massively. i would suggest a padded room and straight jacket for any young child unfortunate enough to fall victim to this savage beast.
@catkinstra Excuse me but this was going LONG before 'Stewpot'. I was listening to this with 'Uncle Mac', 'Childrens Favourites when I was a child. I am 65 now!
Awesome of you to upload these, I remember these from my early childhood, my dad had them and played them to me, and I grew up wanting to play the piano.
Thank you for rekindling happy childhood memories. :)
Oh man this gave me and my brother nightmares to!

My grandma brought me this record from the states when I was a very young kid - about 3 or 4 - that was over 40 years ago!

I timed Sparky's Flight of the Bumblebee at 38 seconds. That's w-a-y over half a minute.

I enjoy Children's 78rpms. Such innocent innovative music produced for the young ones, glad they took good care of their records, Thanks !
