I'll always love Sting. I will always love Brel's version OBVIOUSLY because Brel wrote it because of a horrible incident in his life and so it was FAR worse for him to sing it (that to me seems the reason why its SO emotional on Brel's part)

Sting's voice is gorgeous and soothing. Brel's version was just difficult to listen to, I still cry when I hear it.

I think it really is a moot point... Sting might be better on the musical side, because he is actually "crying" this song and makes it quite melodic. But Brel shows something also very heartbreaking : even in despair, he tries not to show his emotions (boys don't cry right?), only the words show how much he suffers. IMO, Brel is way more emotional, but I agree that his version is more a musical poetry than a song...

@eruhgon thanks for the link. I watched it, unfortunately I have to keep on my old opinion. Briel's video is touching. But IMO, songs are to be heard, so one doesn't have to watch the video to understand it. Brel's version to me feels more like presenting a poem rather than singing. Music wise or just the feel of the singing, I think that sting's is better.
