Kurt a couple of tips: Turn on the SAS and the RCS before you start flying. They will make sure that you lift off correctly and straight.

why would you wanna reach escape velocity? u need to achieve orbital velocity

what he needs to do is shoot up until it is close to the end of atmosphere, then he needs to slowly tilt until he is around in 2500 m/s i believe and horizontal, then he can adjust his velocity.

the yellow target that is empty inside his apoapsis, he can control the amount of distance he has on the part of the orbit he launched into. the yellow target with x inside is his periapsis.

To get a good orbit going at ~100 km, you need about 2300 m/s of horizontal velocity. Guess you need to get up there with another fuel tank.

Also, you need to turn the RCS system on with the R key. It's off by default at liftoff.

Ok , so i tryed it for myself.

My first rocket went to the sub-orbit (that's a achievement considering i never used them)

Recently one of my rocket got the first Ap and Pe stages away from the planet , but the fact is that the module was flowing around for 30 real-life minutes befor crashing down in the ocean , you know how boring it is to watch a capsule fly trough space for 30 minutes ?

Kurt! Turn 45 degrees to the west when at 15000 meters. When at 40 thousand meters, complete the tilt to the west and you'll get an orbit.

Your winglets are causing the instability. You don't need them for your simple rocket design. Also, one Advanced SAS unit will work for your entire rocket, don't bother with the SAS. And don't worry about losing speed after dropping your boosters, its normal... you just lost a great deal of thrust.

I'm not boasting but I made it into orbit after my third try. I gradually changed my rocket to tweak its power to weight ratio and had two solid boosters on the second stage to help accelerate into an orbital trajectory 7/10 the way up the apoapsis.

I'm facepalming the entire time. I got into orbit around Kerbin Prime on my first day. Then again, I've been playing Flight simulator since FS2004 came out. Tips:

1: Have ONE Adv. SAS module, at the penultimate stage.

2: Once you get 100KM, cut engines and wait until you reach apoapsis.

3:Then aim horizontally in the desired direction and thrust.

4:Feel free to insult Jeb.

5: I recommend against RCS. I've never needed to use them, it's just deadweight.

Kurt, it helps to fly at an angle through the atmosphere, you will stay in space longer with a ballistic trajectory and you will go faster when in the atmosphere if you fly at an angle instead of trying to fly straight up.

if your in space you can hit space to arm ypur parachute it will deploy when you get to a certain height the at 500 ft or so it will fully deploy.

BTW, one Advanced SAS mounted on the last stage is enough for the whole flight.

And don't try to save on fuel because it slows you down dramatically. Even if you go full throttle the rocket boosters won't explode.

And if you want to orbit, you have to go about 550 m/s and then turn to an angle of 90°. Then just speed up to about 2300 m/s and you'll orbit the "earth".

That AP word is pronounced ah-po-wop-sis and is the slowest point in an orbit. The opposite is a periopsis. It is the fastest point in an orbit. Directly after the apoapsis, the shuttle will start to speed up and get closer to the object it is orbiting and after the periopsis, the shuttle will get slower and farther away from the object. BTW press r to enable RCS thumbs up so he can see and control his shuttle better in the furture

kurt I have made it into orbit few times with a similar design to your first rocket. recomend not putting wings on the boosters and I dont start tilting the rocket untill i get into "orbit" that way you still gain altitude but you can burn sideways to achieve the speed you need to achieve orbit. also you should keep playing this untill you get to the moon! I have tried I am now stuck in an orbit around the sun. D:
