working in a fruit fly genetics lab that's trying to find therapies for neurodegenerative diseases, I can say I'm glad some corporation is willing to create lines of mutant flies for me. even so, while this is a noble endeavor in itself, I can take a step out and say that the only reason my lab received funding in the first place is because we're studying diseases that are common enough that potential treatments we do develop will be highly profitable for drug companies.

Patents only last for 20 years, and are not renewable. They put time into making it, why shouldn't they get exclusive rights for it (for a little while).

That's not how patents work. If you create something based off another patent, then you can patent that. And you don't have to pay the original patent owner anything.
You only have to pay the original patent owner if you produce and/or sell the thing that was patented.
So, assuming your work produced something new, you wouldn't have to pay royalties on anything.

working in a fruit fly genetics lab that's trying to find therapies for neurodegenerative diseases, I can say I'm glad some corporation is willing to create lines of mutant flies for me. even so, while this is a noble endeavor in itself, I can take a step out and say that the only reason my lab received funding in the first place is because we're studying diseases that are common enough that potential treatments we do develop will be highly profitable for drug companies.

It is interesting that most of the interviewed critics of corporations seems to really like the biggest corporation of them all: the State. Unlike the other corporations, the state has crossed the line of using physical force to reach their goals (other corporations tend to hire the state to do this for them, though, but it's still the state that actually does it).

You can't possibly say that you know for a fact that there is no God, just as you can't possibly know for a fact there is. The way I see it, it's a mistake to blindly follow any religion. But something existing beyond what we know, something we can't even comprehend with our tiny, limited brains - why is it so hard to believe? Or, at least, keep an open mind to?

Religions all want to say they're right and all the others are wrong, but if God is what they all say he (or rather, it) is, then the whole point is NOT to get into these arguments and fights and, ultimately, wars over the details... but as you said, to know love and peace with all.

@tannersanta I also think that the struggle between science and religion, secularism and spirtitualism, etc., are utterly futile, seeing as EVERYTHING can be explained by science given the right knowledge and technology.... but that's not the fucking point. If there is a God, then science is simply the method with which we give names and explanations to his (or its) creations. Everyone wants to be right and say the other is wrong, but in truth, I think both most likely are.... Just my opinion ;)

How can anyone even think about patenting DNA?! Did they put it together, invent it in some form? NO - they did not.
The saddest thing about it all is the stupidity of the judges - did they read through the documents, arguments pro et contra? Every kid can tell you DNA is a natural structure...
The next step is a pattern on every human gene. I wonder if children will be sued for stealing those genes?! It's possible - after all, they already patented every other living being on Earth.

This makes me angry. I feel like i want to call up my MP and tell them to speak against this.
That or stand in front of my legislative building with patent numbers on every limb of my body and claim that I'm no longer my own, but that I'm owned. I could do that for awareness.

Patents only last for 20 years, and are not renewable. They put time into making it, why shouldn't they get exclusive rights for it (for a little while).
Now copyrights are ridiculous. Life of the author plus 70 years, or 120 years for corps. Again, that is rediculous.

The problem,though, is that there are companies filing for patents on the genome itself. If your work involves a patented gene, you will have to pay the patent holder royalties for anything your research produces, all without them having lifted a finger.

That's not how patents work. If you create something based off another patent, then you can patent that. And you don't have to pay the original patent owner anything.
You only have to pay the original patent owner if you produce and/or sell the thing that was patented.
So, assuming your work produced something new, you wouldn't have to pay royalties on anything.
