I enjoy bluegrass like this rather than like super country hickish bluegrass. I like the bluegrass that sounds like you're riding a horse around a scary mountain in a thunderstorm. Any suggestions on artists I should look for? I like Sarah Jarosz.
@Mariezee44 Hmmm...Maybe Iron Horse, Cherryholmes, Sam Bush, Bela Fleck, Vassar Clements, or Nickel Creek. It's hard to say. You can make mp3s by using zamzar dot com.
@Mariezee44 Look for Nate Leath, Tatiana Hargreaves (her brother Alex playes with Sarah Jarosz among others), Bruce Molsky, Chris Thile, Michael Daves, Crooked Still, The Duhks and if you want more old timey also Tim Eriksen, Riley Baugus, John Hartford, Tommy Jarrell ...
Emily, the fiddle player, just got her masters degree in elementary teaching. She is now looking for a job. Molly will be a junior this fall, and she is hoping one day to be a physical therapist. I taught fifth grade for many years.
Hi - I loved the way you played it. Not excatly as I do it, but I like it. I have been trying to catch the shuffle in the B part. Is that some variation on b-g-b ?
I really have no idea. I do know that we play it wrong. I don't have a recorded version of the tune, so I just hummed it to Emily as best as I could remember it, and this is the result.
I don't know if Emily has ever heard any other fiddle player play this one. I just "sang" it to her as I remembered it, and this is what came out. We were just using a Sony digital camera, if that's what you mean by program.
Hi, is Emily your daughter? You mention in one of your videos that she has a CD, were is it available? Does Emily have a website? Nice tune, thanks for posting!
I have heard that Charlie Daniels got his idea for the fiddle part for "The Devil Went Down to Georgia" from this song, but I don't know of it's true or not. They are quite similar, though.
Great job on the tune. If you look up "Kummerle" on youtube I'm playing guitar there. Also, I figured blues was more about blue notes (b3,b5,b7) than key signature.
Great fiddlin' and some great guitar backup too. As you already know, traditional Blues is defined by the "12 bar blues progression". I do like the relative minor chords that are in this song.
I agree. I always figured that the word "blues" in this title referred to the minor key and faraway mood, rather than to the particular style of music known as blues.
I will have to post my version of Florida Blues but here's what I think of as "blues". I used someone else's version because I havent loaded one yet. youtube . com/watch?v=XdY6gY5DTZE

Anyone who says this is fake just needs to see some more irish folk. Look up frankie gavin if you're interested. Even I play at this speed sometimes.

Yes. There are many, many violin/fiddle players who can play a lot faster than this.

this song sounds like the intro from 'The Devil Went Down to Georgia'... Maybe it was based on this?
LeSpongebobEditor 2 years ago
Good observation. I believe it was the other way around, though. "Devil..." was based on this song.

the tune is just moved up an octave

Good Job Mr. Greer!
You and your... Daughter? Emily did a wonderful job. The higher notes, however, seemed to be a bit off.
It's okay though! You're amazing!
Both of you, just splendid :)

reminds me of the song, the devil went to george, still pretty good though
davidb2345 3 years ago
That could be because Charlie Daniels stole the main theme from another song. I think it was a symphony.
RCycleRider4Eva 3 years ago 2
Vassar Clements wrote Lonesome Fiddle Blues back in the 1950's, Charlie stole the melody from him. (Now it's called "sampling", not stealing)
mongorich 3 years ago
I think that's right. What Emily does here is probably closer to what Daniels did, because "Devil..." is one of her favorites songs.

We recorded it in our front yard in SW MO.

Cool! That is getting to the western edge of the Carolina Wren's range (Thryothorus ludovicianus). Fine music and great bird.
