As we put clothes on, people didnt force us, it is our taste so we are in charge of what we do. A bellydancer, respresent herself as most by her clothes so it is not the peoples faulth if they stare. I dont like her costume, but her dance is good, its shame.
Someone has to keep me up on the cultural thing over there. I heard from an egyptian friend that belly dancers are kind of regarded as strippers. Is that true? and do those women HAVE to be at weddings over seas? Cause I don't think I want a half naked chick shaking her stuff at my wedding.
It's true they are not regarded by Muslms as "good girls." Still, the dancers who displa the art with respect are highly regarded." I do not think she is half naked. She looks fabulous.
@EmpressMV Exactly right :)) Being Egyptian Muslim myself ...We appreciate their art very much but it's not totally acceptable for conservative Muslim families here .Though , Egyptian girls have the most empressive abilities and talent to present that art but their families forbid that .
@Fardosssa :), Hi. We love the dance here in the U.S. I do understand the need to be conservative. We have laws to protect women from sexual harrassment. Attractive women are always harrassed by men no matter what . I often wish I were Muslim so I could cover myself when I leave my home.
I am a belly dancer of many years and I strive to learn the authentic way an Egyptian dancer performs and expresses the music. I respect the culture of Egypt even though I am born American.
@EmpressMV :) It's refreshing to see so open-minded people about Islam (which is a great and humantarian religion in itself and not just about covering women outside home ....) Arabs- even non-Muslim- had always been conservative and liked to cover up women since a long time & until now ...It's a question of culture & traditon more than a specific religion Whether for Arab Muslim , Christians or even Jews ...and Shokran for your nice comment .
@EmpressMV ~ You don't have to be Muslim to cover. Many women of various cultures wear head scarves. The best belly dancers try to learn the culture as well as the movement. Kudos to you for doing that also.
Hi there i have a friend from egypt i asked him about belly dancers and what they were thought of as and he said....belly dancing isn't is common as it use to be but that people still have them come to weddings to bring good luck and to help the couple get in the mood becuase some marriages are still arranged over there he never said they were regarded as strippers but that women are perferred to be fully dressed Also this "the dance of the middle east "and represents them
Nelly Fouad is a great belly dancer. She is from Alexandria "the city of art" in Egypt. She was one of the best belly dancers in the seventies and she retired in 1985.
