ok good custom but one thing y give $2500 for a Miata With good running gear when you can pick up one with a bad motor and a busting tranny for realy realy cheap now picking one up for about $200 $300 will give you more room for mods lol
i wouldve drop a f22 motor from a s2000...you can buy a used motor with less 20k miles for like $2500..a light weight shell with a very very well balance motor equal endless fun...and that motor will last forever i seen a few s2000 with more than 250k original miles and still goin strong
@thatnigga54 If you are going to buy a F22 or F20, why not just stick with the S2K? The MX-5 accommodates a V8 which is its advantage. Or you could go with an SR20DET.
@supraloverTT08 Iv'e heard it doesnt mess up the weight distribution, I guess you can put in a aluminum block and itll weigh the same as the cast iron stock engine.
that's not even close to true, the car was designed from the factory to accept a v6 and still be balanced. most any v6 weighs the same if only 20 or so pounds less than a ford v8. add aluminum heads and light weight accesorys and your right within the ORIGINAL design specs. add aftermarket suspension and it wil still out handle anything Italian.

@95concours me too i love the fact speed channel gave him the so much freedom in diversity of the projects on his show great seeing him back on tv again even tho trucks will never be the same the guy is my idol hopefully he stays with speed for a while
Very cool v8 kit love your show, check out my 76 ford stepside on you tube it has a 390 out of a wrecked 67 mustang GTmy son helped me build this when he was 13., the bed is home made not fenders though.
what the hell is the name of the company that makes that compact accessories kit??? I think he is saying "zooks products" but I cant find anything on google about that.
ya but to push a 14b into the 400hp range, you'll have to start laying down some serious money. Plus if you have the turbo to do it with then you'll have to deal with lag and not at 2000rpms try more like 3000+. Now dont get me wrong the 14b is a pretty decent motor but a v8 is more fun and reliable in the long run.
problem is, they don't bolt right in and there's no kits that i know of that allow you to do that. the monster miata kit cost around $5k and it bolts almost right in. the tranny fitting is probably the biggest problem.
also, a lot more people know how to work on american small blocks and very few know how to work on the rotaries. the v8 is just a lot more practical.
you sir, are delusional. If you mean a naturally aspirated rotary then yes, without a doubt the v8 would win. But a boosted 13b, 20b.. there is no way. Putting a V8 in a miata will cause understeer around corners. let me be clear. ON A DRAG STRIP the V8 will most likely win, but on a track.. rotary all day.
The v8s aren't actually that much heavier than the I4 that's already in the Miata. Most people that have done the swap report around 50lbs more, which can easily be offset in the rear.
This comment has received too many negative votesshow
@spyderhex I'd slam in a 3 rotor...then we talk. It's just a desgrace to put in a v8 in this car. 3 rotor (If it fits), RB-25DET, SR-20DET or the mazdaspeed engine PERIOD.
@JgHaverty i dont think so. Do a little more research. The mazda 787B had a 2.6L rotary and put out 750hp naturally aspirated. It beat out 7.2L turbocharged V8's.
Rotarys are light, make alot of power per liter. Much better than a V8 since it'll throw off weight distribution and add weight to the car.
@JD0x0 Um... a race bred, purpose built engine is not the same as buying an engine from an rx7. I can grab an LS2 out of a GTO, slap some internals in it, and turbo charge it and smoke that 787B. Easily.
Also, how long do you think that damn motor would last?
@JgHaverty even a renesis RX8 engine. 250hp 1.3L n/a. They actually last quite a while. You need to rebuild them every 60K or so but they are such small simple engines it makes them easier to work on and with only 5 moving parts they tend to be pretty reliable. Also i dont think any (modified) LS2 could smoke a 787B and still run reliably. Although I do really like the LS engines, they are well built i still think a rotary is better suited for a miata. Im waiting for the RX9 rotary to do a swap.
@JD0x0 yeah but when a v8 last 200k and the rotary only last 60k, it makes it hard to but a brand new rotary powered car. not only that but a 250hp rotary gets about the same mpg as a new corvette with 426hp, but either way i like both motors. if it was my choice id put a v8 in the newer miatas because they weigh more, and a wankel in the older miatas because you wouldnt need as much torque to move it.
@coalandnuclear rotarys last more than 60K they just usually need new seals etc. Most piston engines would need gasket work or belt work anyway. It's normal maintaince. Ive seen rotarys last 200K plenty of 13B's Im sure the RENESIS is even more relibable just as the new 1.8L RX9 rotary will be.
@JD0x0 yeah but a 20 dollar belt is cheap and easy, the rotarys tend to be on the expensive side. and as a daily driver id take a ls over a rotary cause of mpg and the fact that you have to rebuid them every 60k as opposed to a v8 which i have with 182k and still has good compression. and rebuilding isnt normal maintenance, id rather change a belt than do a rebuild, at least on my daily driver
@ShReK516 1) You're an idiot. 2) You should do some research. This 400 hp motor will smash pretty much any rotary. 3) Compare an Ls1 engine weight to a 13b-rew weight. 13b -> 388 pounds, ~230whp. LS1 -> 487 pounds ~300whp AND 300wtq. Not to mention, sky is the limit with the power mods, and they are infinitely more reliable.
Do some research. Just because something is "cool" to you, doesnt mean it is better. There is a reason flyin miata uses v8's and not rotaries lol.
@AaronBellDeo so that 400hp motor could smash a 26b rotary? Youre right the LS1 would beat 700+hp 500ft/lbs tq of a 4 rotor. That is naturally aspirated btw. This motor survived the 24hrs LeMans and the technitions said it could race it again after disassembling the engine. The engine got banned because it was too fast and reliable with only 5 moving parts. So I seriously doubt the LS1 is "infinitely" more reliable.
@JgHaverty WRONG. Throw a 4 rotor in and it'd put out 700+hp 500ft/lbs tq, naturally aspirated and still weigh about the same (if not less) than the stock 4 cyl.
@JD0x0 um, how much do you think that engine costs lmao. You are an idiot. I could throw a 2000whp/1700wtq LSx block into the miata as well... You can always go "bigger" you schmuck.
@JgHaverty If you fab the crankshaft and use two 13b engines and combine them (which is what the 26b is pretty much) then it can run you from 6K-10K. Thats about the same you'd have to pay for an LSX with 300-400 hp if you add a turbo or anything done to get anywhere near the numbers you listed then youre easily look at another 10K. If a rotary needs more power just add more rotors. there isnt a 6 rotor engine yet because it would be insanely powerful well over 1000whp still naturally aspirated.
for half the money and one fourth of the labor you could have just turbocharged the miata and it would have been just as fast, and when u build the miata motor they can make 400+ HP. the stock miata motor can handle 280HP with stock internals. plus it would be lighter, then u would have money to make it handle better. and still it wouldnt add up to the money needed to do this. monster miatas in my opinion are fading and are overrated . this car couldve been so much better for the money.
yeah, that's what i thought first but think about it you get a v8 320+ hp and tq stock. there still so much potential to work on it, and reliable. (well might not be as reliable as stock motor lol)
yes, but they didnt use a stock motor but it does have forged internals. but really how reliable is that power with an american engine,on top of that a ford. but the stock 1.8 easily makes 260HP reliably. this is because the stock motor has kind of low comp, but also it has thick rods and a forged crank stock. so my money is still on the 1.8. plus the stock motor u can slowly build as the v8 has to be completely swapped and everything b4 u can even drive it.
see v8 people for some reason are worried about low end power even though u never use it. the miata only revs to 7000 rpm's so a 14b would be perfect and, oh yea lag until 2000 RPM's.
except most people that do work to v8's and actually want to make HP they could use in a car like the miata get the tuned kits where you make your power up to 6k which is plenty.
late model car, late model engine, CARBURATOR????????? I know he wants to keep in simple, but leave that crap for nascar. Fuel injection is the way to go. No matter how much hp you can get with that carb, you will get it with fuel injection, but without the drama!
Anyone that complains about gas mileage when they dropped a 5.0 motor in a Miata deserves to get hit. He went from a little 4 cylinder to a v8 I don't think he really cares about gas mileage...
Guys,we are talking about a real muscle v8 engine. If you know about that type of engines you should know that needs plenty of gas but what you give is what you take. Can't have 400+ hp and need almost no gas!!!
nice setup. Could the miata be making a come back? who knows...but i know this.... who the hell wouldn't want to drive this once a v8 goes into it..????huh??? if you say no then your nuts. A small car like that will fuckin fly...... sweet
lol, ive seen 100's of versions of this, but ive found the most common to be GM 350 crates, but ive only seen a few 302's and they had no where near 400hp and still hauled MAJOR ass
This comment has received too many negative votesshow
this is a dumb project, it would be better to tune and supercharge the 1.8 liter that way it wont mess up the weight distribution and will be just as fast
anyone know what company he was using 2 put the tbird rear diff in i saw that episode on tv and was thinkin bout doing one myself ive got the rear diff in the back yard
yes i am gonna use a junkyard quality alt.. cause i have like 5 of em layin around lol why spend all ur money on fancy stuff that doenst work any better love how his budget hot rod has a 10k engine doh!
i hate gearz now because i was watching the banshee since it started and they say the final episode was suppose to be on today and its not. i hear they do that alot..
no emissions equipment, cats, and to make it actually emissions legal (correct me if i'm wrong guys) you have to use a motor from the same auto company and it can only be of the same year of the cars VIN or newer.
depends on the state. in indiana, the crappy state i live in, they really dont check for anything. in places like california, i think you can do all sorts of crazy swaps, but it has to pass the smog test, and for some reason have the same transmission the engine originally came with.
Crap? Highly anticipated first show of this season, the BANDIT? The DIY network just did a complete build on one one month before. V-8 bar stool? Yea right, who the hell cares? How to put carpet in a two seat car? Stay out of that truck school, I don't care how a Kenworth oil pump works! Don't take us to drag races, If I want to watch that I'll turn on ESPN-2. I just want him to keep his ass IN THE SHOP building neat shit, and when is he guna finish Sgt.Rock?
because a completely redone and custom car could cost upwards of $60,000. this project was meant to stay under $20,000 (whether it actually was or not, i don't know), so it is much cheaper than other projects and this car will keep up with anything else out there. plus you could skimp on some things if you were doing this project yourself
Ha, the engine in the MX5 is a cast iron block and ways an absoloute ton......this will not add hardly any weight. Its already been proven that sticking a v8 in an mx5 does not effect the handling at all.

JD0x0 1 year ago
ACTUALLY, look up V8 Roadsters. They're based in Florida and do make a kit for the LS* series ;

the ford plant is good, but the GM lsX motors are the way to be, there lighter. more powerfull, and have a better trans attached

for half the money and one fourth of the labor you could have just turbocharged the miata and it would have been just as fast, and when u build the miata motor they can make 400+ HP. the stock miata motor can handle 280HP with stock internals. plus it would be lighter, then u would have money to make it handle better. and still it wouldnt add up to the money needed to do this. monster miatas in my opinion are fading and are overrated . this car couldve been so much better for the money.
96hatchy 2 years ago
i bet you never go with the flow do you. instead of appreciating what he's done you have to find a way to tear it down. nice.
camellude97 2 years ago
yeah, that's what i thought first but think about it you get a v8 320+ hp and tq stock. there still so much potential to work on it, and reliable. (well might not be as reliable as stock motor lol)
Angel86huang 2 years ago
yes, but they didnt use a stock motor but it does have forged internals. but really how reliable is that power with an american engine,on top of that a ford. but the stock 1.8 easily makes 260HP reliably. this is because the stock motor has kind of low comp, but also it has thick rods and a forged crank stock. so my money is still on the 1.8. plus the stock motor u can slowly build as the v8 has to be completely swapped and everything b4 u can even drive it.
96hatchy 2 years ago
YA IF YOU ENJOY LAG......
funguy7979 2 years ago
see v8 people for some reason are worried about low end power even though u never use it. the miata only revs to 7000 rpm's so a 14b would be perfect and, oh yea lag until 2000 RPM's.
96hatchy 2 years ago
except most people that do work to v8's and actually want to make HP they could use in a car like the miata get the tuned kits where you make your power up to 6k which is plenty.
RosieKR 2 years ago
is there any footage of him driving the miata after its done
camman924 2 years ago
Just look up Monster Miata or 5.0 miata... The company "monster miata" has been doing these kits for a while now.
Dali0Lama 2 years ago
late model car, late model engine, CARBURATOR????????? I know he wants to keep in simple, but leave that crap for nascar. Fuel injection is the way to go. No matter how much hp you can get with that carb, you will get it with fuel injection, but without the drama!
bugablue 2 years ago
and way better MPG, I know that sounds dumb, but when you have 10 Gallon tank, it matters.
seroyer2 2 years ago
Anyone that complains about gas mileage when they dropped a 5.0 motor in a Miata deserves to get hit. He went from a little 4 cylinder to a v8 I don't think he really cares about gas mileage...
Dali0Lama 2 years ago
duh.. he went carb because cost, eficiency.. this is a budget build
cantbuytime 2 years ago
Guys,we are talking about a real muscle v8 engine. If you know about that type of engines you should know that needs plenty of gas but what you give is what you take. Can't have 400+ hp and need almost no gas!!!
Foukos91 2 years ago
AMEN. Couldn't agree with you more.
Nexum120 2 years ago
Yea then you gotta get your ecm reflashed every time you wanna change the cam, intake, etc. No thanks, I'll rake the simplicity of a carb
f20cmx5 2 years ago
ill bet they couldnt afford a good fuel injection kit!
ahardy93955 2 years ago
nice setup. Could the miata be making a come back? who knows...but i know this.... who the hell wouldn't want to drive this once a v8 goes into it..????huh??? if you say no then your nuts. A small car like that will fuckin fly...... sweet
funguy7979 2 years ago
lol, ive seen 100's of versions of this, but ive found the most common to be GM 350 crates, but ive only seen a few 302's and they had no where near 400hp and still hauled MAJOR ass

this is a dumb project, it would be better to tune and supercharge the 1.8 liter that way it wont mess up the weight distribution and will be just as fast

Exactly, Might be fast, but the carb just made the Miata a trailer queen, won't pass smog!
Skizzo321 3 years ago
the beauty of states that require no emissions testing lol
mxsailor803 3 years ago
why woudnt it pass smog?????
humantestdummy 3 years ago
no emissions equipment, cats, and to make it actually emissions legal (correct me if i'm wrong guys) you have to use a motor from the same auto company and it can only be of the same year of the cars VIN or newer.
mxsailor803 3 years ago
depends on the state. in indiana, the crappy state i live in, they really dont check for anything. in places like california, i think you can do all sorts of crazy swaps, but it has to pass the smog test, and for some reason have the same transmission the engine originally came with.
apancher 3 years ago
all you need is a mufler, catalytic converter and the emissions need to be good.....air to gas ratio

I just want him to keep his ass IN THE SHOP building neat shit, and when is he guna finish Sgt.Rock?

dorkyfuckhead2 3 years ago
Why do these guys promote a "budget" car and put a bunch of new crap!!!!!!!!!!
dorkyfuckhead2 3 years ago
because a completely redone and custom car could cost upwards of $60,000. this project was meant to stay under $20,000 (whether it actually was or not, i don't know), so it is much cheaper than other projects and this car will keep up with anything else out there. plus you could skimp on some things if you were doing this project yourself

anthonyT01 3 years ago
Ha, the engine in the MX5 is a cast iron block and ways an absoloute ton......this will not add hardly any weight. Its already been proven that sticking a v8 in an mx5 does not effect the handling at all.
latania2005 3 years ago 3
oh damn... that's such an unfair advantage.. -_-
anthonyT01 3 years ago 2
the 302 isnt nearly as heavy as a lot of other v8's out there. Plus the top end is all aluminum
