Charlie Mingus is either cheering her or rolling over in his grave, but I think Mingus would approve and love her as the musician she truly is! WHAT A STAR-TRIPPN' GENIUS SOLO SHE DOES ON THIS CUT. +, what a voice she has! I only regret that I hadn't heard of her until a few months ago. Nothing sexier than a beautiful woman that can REALLY play an instriment, plus sing in a sensual & talented voice that is eclipsed by very few in the history of music. Jazz is my ride & she's taken me miles.
@danman004 I just found out that this song is on Terri Lynn Carrington's new album called The Mosaic Project which was just released on July 19, 2011. You can also buy the song on Itunes because the whole album is on itunes.
I love her bass technique she plays it like she plays a violin which I believe she played this instrument first. Her dexterity on the bass, the way she plays the chords, gives her an advantage I think.
This young lady is the truth. She is a god saint for music ,she will change the game of jazz music so that the young players can katch up with the old player that knew good jazz .
I absolutely refuse to get into an argument on YouTube, but can I ask you, from a standpoint of curiosity as I am play the bass guitar and am somewhat ignorant of these things...what's wrong with her tone? To my admittedly untrained ear, uprights almost always sound more or less the same to me. Like I said, I play electric bass and I just don't know about uprights, so I'm curious.
@MrStrangeSensation Hi. I am also a bass player, firstly electric then double, so i have gone through the whole amplification issue that comes with playing a double bass. I would firstly like to say that i totally understand how hard it is to get a good sound from a double bass through a P.A, and that double basses need 1 really good mike if not two, to truely capture their true sound. It also depends on the technique, and how hard the player 'digs into' the bass.
@MrStrangeSensation ... I dont think Esperanza has a particually hard attack / gets a hard sound from the bass, which has a bit to do with her amplified sound, (this is not to say that she is a bad player, i actually think she is one of the best in jazz atm) the other factor is the method of amplification. I do think her sound is a bit wooly, flat and lacks clarity, but at the end of the day - every musician has their own sound, and What you play is more important than bad amplification lol
Fair enough, yeah. I guess that's the trouble with a gigantic acoustic instrument, hahaha. But damn do I love this girl! I'm willing to look past the flat tone, given that she can indeed play like a monster; not to mention she's beautiful and her voice is pure gold.
Not human? I wouldn't say that Esperanza is not human! She's definitely very talented. She's a talented singer, bass player, composer and writer. She really puts her heat and soul into her music. She's not the best bass player that I've heard and saw play. And she will even say so herself, that she is not the best bass player. There's something special about her and she is quite unique, but she is definitely human!!
crayola - spontaneous movement of vivid colors goin up and down, spiraling sideways, etc. wow i get it haha. Perfect word to describe what Esperanza is.
I regard her as a Muse. Not even human. I am just that amazed by the emotion and spirit that she conveys through music. I am eluded by her magnificence.
@LawdMyEyes some indiviuals where born to do things like create, destroy, build up, heal, help, and in esperanza's case inspire.she human but just driven more than your average girl.
@LawdMyEyes no i'm trying to say she's a inspiring/ muse like to me cause i'm a girl who sings/plays sax/other stuff so to me she's where i see myself in a couple of years. so yeah i sorry i hope i'm clarifying what i was trying to convey correctly...sorry (sad face)
Nono, it's just 4/4, but the timings of the main theme is pretty complex, so it's easy to lose it! :) And they do tons of groupings, lifts and short syncopations and so on... that doesn't make it easier! :P
@hunterspark40 this is true, she has EXTREMELY TALENTED musicians in the band. that said, the role of the double bass (or any bass) is to support and complement in a musical group (trio, duet, quartet, quintet, etc). it's not a stand alone instrument. she can hold her own as a bassist. checkout some of her solo performances. her ability to sing and play bass is what makes her intriguing; and gives her great stage presence.
