  • Can somebody please tell me what is the word he says on 1:44? Jumpstart his own what??

  • @ahberjennlee I have not seen Infernal Affairs as of yet, although I do plan on it,but I do agree with you The Departed did suck.To me it was one of Jack Nicholson's worst performances.

  • Tarantino is too cool

  • Days of Being Wild is the best WAW film. Chungking Express is his most mediocre. So of course the world loves it more than Days.

  • Tony Leung was in "Days of Being Wild" for about 2.5 minutes at the very end.

  • its like QT never left Video Archives. So much movie knowledge!!!

  • What a fanboy! haha, can't blame him though ;) Was obsessed with Wong Kar Wai during my High School years, buying 5 dollar bootlegs on the weekends :P

  • This guy's insights are fascinating, it leaves me wanting to spend the rest of the day ploughing through all the movies he mentions. I understand QT did an introduction to each of the videos released by Rolling Thunder Pictures (Sonatine, Switchblade Sisters etc.). If anyone has a copy of them could they please please *PLEASE* upload his into?

  • @all the commentators who think QT displays this kind of insane movie obsession in real life- its a marketing gimmick- people don't realize when Hollywood is pitching. QT loves films and works hard on his projects-but the whole otaku style jabbering is just QTs schtick to hype projects.

Just look up famous actors on Wiki and see how many have "troubled childhoods"- these kind of stories are popular as it helps create a connection between the controlled, elite life of celebrity & the real world.

  • Tarantino is the right one to comment the master Wong kar wai. Bright comment by the way.

Kar wai "fallen angels' is work of art.

  • if you're a fan of Infernal Affairs, you'd agree with me that The Departed kinda sucks as a western adaptation of this Hong Kong blockbuster.

but as a normal Hollywood movie, its just average. watchable only because of its huge star studded cast.

  • This film sucks,Ashes of Time-stick to the end, it is pretty awesome, artsy version of Hero

  • @PtAltmVansanTarr think you got it wrong... HERO is a big budget "hollywood type" version of Ashes of Time...a cool film... don't get when people refer to films as artsy... thats the big damage hollywood has done to cinema..if filmmakers do something different then is called artsy (like if it was a bad thing)...

  • @PtAltmVansanTarr..think you got it wrong... HERO is a big budget "hollywood type" version of Ashes of Time.a very cool film.don't get when people refer to films as artsy. thats the big damage hollywood has done to cinema.if filmmakers do something different then is called artsy (like if it was a bad thing)hollywood is just part of the whole film industry, generally the most uninteresting boring side of it. some good films come out of there, but is a low ratio compare to their whole production

  • 14 people who dislike dint understand Chinese

  • i would love to see more of QT talking about his favrite films.. which series is this from ?

  • He's such a movie fanboy. It's cute.

  • Uhm. Why is he spinning around slowly...?

  • wow his voice was definitely not what I expected

  • @Sloth55Chunk How could you not know his voice. He was there in some of his films. Reservoir Dogs and Pulp Fiction for example.

  • @matwenwen Those are his two films I haven't seen haha

  • I'm not much of a fan of Tarantino, but it's obvious that he loves the pants of films and cinema.

  • @BafflinBook : Spielberg and Lucas have both acknowledged their debt to Asian cinema. However they were more influenced by Kurosawa in Japan than HK cinema.

Check the production credits for Kagemusha.

  • What I love about Tarantino is that he really is a fan of films and has respect for other directors and always pays respect to other films as well and never has an issue saying where he got inspiration from. I know many people say he steals and copies etc. but he more than any other director around his age or generation really is a true visionary and he has HIS style unlike other directors IMO.

  • There's this video by Rita Indiana (merengue-techno fusion artist) called, "El Juidero" that REALLY reminds me of something Tarrantino would film. I've been watching it all day, its so good!

  • Tarantino has this Quirk to him and lucky he's a film director to back it up...

    He's just cool.

  • Please stop making comment about Departed & Infernal Affairs, Tarantino is talking about ChungKing Express here... Get ur topic right...

  • I'm a big Tarantino fan, but, Tony Leung in Days of Being Wild? He's hardly in it, he's in the last scene only, the main actor is Leslie Cheung. Well, those things happen. I'm also a bit annoyed at the rumours saying that he doesn't like Takeshi Kaneshiro, it's true that he never seems to mention him while he's always praising the other actors lavishly. In Chungking Express, his role is quite simple but he's good, and in Fallen Angels he's just amazing and really can't be ignored.

  • Incredible! I would say the knowledge he possesses regarding the Hong Kong movies is greater than 99.9% of the Hong Kong population.

  • i like your name

  • Genius. Its great to see Tarantino's inspirations and how they came to be.

  • i have no clue why everyone's talking about the departed when it's not what this video is focused on. Basically, the departed wasn't a terrible movie, but infernal affairs was darker and more engaging. Maybe if I didn't watch infernal affairs first my perspective may be different but since i did, the character fits tony's description more and it emphasizes more on both tony and andy. and dicaprio is just a WAD and a tool.lol

  • @emoonionhead clearly the departed wasn't terrible. why does everyone assume that a remake must be a lesser film? i just want to keep it civilized because people take this stuff way too seriously on youtube but infernal affairs has the feel of a b movie sometimes. thats no disrespect to the director but it ony makes snese that someone like scorsese whos been making great movies for decades would do a better job.

  • The way the movie was filmed in 20 or so days is inspiring but the actual movie itself is sooooo overrated and far from a masterpiece

  • The Departed wasn't a scene by scene remake it has a completely different style, it was better directed I must admit. I honostly could care less which of the two won awards, both are incredible. Scorsese won that award because they never gave it to him for Raging Bull, Taxi Driver, Goodfellas, Kundun, etc. Anyway the oscars are all politics now, The Hurt Locker? I though that was a pretty bad movie.

  • I like to think I'm a bit of a movie connoisseur, but then I listen to someone like Tarantino speak and I realize I don't know shit, love his knowledge of world cinema.

here's the only three Wong Kar Wai films I own. Chungking Express, In The Mood For Love, and 2046.

  • great director

  • great great

  • this will really help me with my film studies exam tomorrow. fanx Quentin n the guy who uploaded it.

  • I love simple Quentin explores and shares his affection for films. He somehow makes it easier for everyone to enjoy his film delights.

As for Chungking Express, I cannot say how beautiful the film is. From the dark and bleak atmosphere of the first part (with Kaneshiro and Lin), and my favourite second part. Tony Leung and Faye Wong's characters exuded enough chemistry to make the story work seamlessly.

  • If you like Chung King Express then check out Wong Kar Wai's 'Fallen Angels'(if you haven't already seen it.)

Probably one of my favorite movies & I personally think that it's superior to Chung King in that, instead of telling two separate stories,he seamlessly weaves two stories together.

  • I love how he's wearing Phat Farm, he has the funniest sense of fashion

  • HOW DOES HE KNOW SO MUCH ABOUT MOVIES!?

  • it's interesting because i'm (surprisingly) not such a huge fan of tarantino, but when he talks about films i love the energy i get from his interest and enthusiasm.

  • his knowledge in HK cinema amazes me to chuckle

  • i am a hongkonger . i love wong ka wai and Quentin Tarantino

  • that's the most random way i've ever seen his films ranked.

  • Tarantino is awesome, he's so crazy about Hong Kong cinema. And thanks to him for bringing it to audiences outside of Asia!!!

  • Quentin is my fav director.

and WKW's Chungking Express is my most fav film of all time.

    Great!

  • tnx a LOT for sharing this. regards!

  • why does he keep moving around weirdly? Talk about bad production quality...

  • Un mal cineasta, que se cuelga de una EXCELENTE PELICULA

  • Heehee Quentin didn't really talk about the movie until near the end. mostly a commentary on actor/actress trivia tidbits.

  • FAT

  • So he doesn't mention anything about what makes Chunking Express such an important film? What a cretin, he only knows trivia.

  • martin scorsese y quentin tarantino y tal vez steven spielberg son los tipos ke mas saben de cine en el mundo

  • :) He's the Guy !

Without him he wouldn't have done Pulp fiction, Kill Bill reservoir Dogs etc..

and if he wasn't here right now He wouldn't have been able to save movies like Jet Li's 'Hero' from being Dubbed.

keep the original Movies as it is.. . don't ***** it up.

    So thanks to Quentin !

    sdmf W

  • haha everyone has crush to faye wong.

yes defo after watching chunking express.

  • I am not really fond of ternatino

because what I see in his movie is rip out from different movies from asia and europe

but still he is good director.

    No offence.

    just my view.

  • He isn't trying to rip them off.

He's trying to pay tribute to those films, he loves them.

He wants people to see something and go- OH I know what movie that's from, that's cool that he referenced it!

  • w w w (.) imdb (.) c o m / title/tt0109424/

  • i agree. Many of hes ideas are stolen from asian movies or whatever.

  • I would guess in this case that that was probably the Weinsteins. QT does have a massive ego, and is definitely a controversial figure, and a lot of positive and negative things can be said about his films. But I find this particular video a good thing. In an age when multiplexes are crowded with Bruckheimer and Bay sludge, if he can get some teenage film fans into great cinema like the French New Wave and Wong-Kar Wai, then I say more power to him.

  • A MASTER TALKING ABOUT ANOTHER MASTER

  • I love listening to Tarantino talking about films. You can just tell how much he loves movies. He is probably a fan first and a film maker second.

  • Absolutely. Whatever I think of him as a filmmaker, I love him as a film fan. He knows what he'd talking about and loves it here, and it's infectious.

  • Chungking is just one of the best flicks I've seen. Also, didn't know Wong Kar Wai was into Godard--makes perfect sense though. Godard is pretty much--the man. Check out Pierrot Le Fou by him, reminds me of Tarantino in a way.

  • Interesting, haven't seen the movie.

  • quentin's cool shit. smart dude and filmmaker

  • great director, very interesting, thanks buttsurfer

  • Tarantino's interest in HK film is not patronizing "slumming." It is not "arch" mockery. It is enthusiastic homage.

He seems to genuinely love HK films and seems genuinely respectful toward Chinese culture in general.

As a Chinese person myself, I appreciate Tarantino's championing of an unjustly neglected film tradition.

  • Of course, about 7.5 minutes in, he lumps "almost every other" Hong Kong movie into the very narrowminded "wild, crazy" genres, like comedies, action movies, John Woo and, well, that's about it from his perspective. There's SO MUCH more to Hong Kong cinema than that, but folks like Tarantino help spread the MYTH that it's all about wild and crazy action. So sad.

  • I suppose it's all a question of expectations.

If one had high expectations, then yes, even Tarantino's endorsement of HK films is going to be a disappointment.

But if one never really expected American moviegoers to given HK and other Chinese cinema their due, then one is going to be pleasantly surprised at the long-overdue appreciation shown the genre.

  • typo:

    give, not given.

  • this is Tarentino we're talking about. Every movie he makes has a level of "wild and crazy"....in fact, i think Tarantino set an american standard for "wild and crazy".

I don't think you'll hear Tarantino ever endorse "in the mood for love". And vice versa....i don't think Wong Kar Wai would want Tarantino advertising it either.

  • I think Tarantino went to far when Hero was marketed like a "Tarantino presents" film. Still, it's awesome that's he so knowledgeable about Asian cinema.

  • While I don't necessarily like Tarantino for dipping his hand in every Hong Kong film thats ever been released in the States, I have to give him credit for knowing his film history as well as his ability to identify and link Goddards and Wong Kar Wai's style.

  • I'm only slightly offended by the fact that Asian actors are compared to American actors to gain credibility. I guess he could just be doing this because he knows his audience and could give them a good impression of the Asian actor's status... but still...

  • i definetly think he was just trying to allow the american audience to this clip to relate to who he is talking about

  • haha, I completely randomly fell on one of your vids... small world :)

thanks for that one, pretty insightful, even if Tarantino sounds more like a movie buff than an actual director :)

  • whoa I'd soo love to have Tarantino as a Film- & Filmmaking teacher of mine =DDD

  • Brigitte Lin is Taiwanese.

  • In my mind, the reason that everyone, and I do mean everyone, has some token criticism to throw at Tarantino is because no one can match his level of success.

  • This guy is a cover director, I think he is more a film reviewer or film expert then an artist.

  • I guess film expert, but he does have a artistic film ability also. RD, PF, JB, KB, DP, all have artistic merit. Maybe some more than others, but they are still well constructed and have, in the least, an artistic sense to them.

  • Yes, I do agree with you to an extent, but it still feels like a rub off from other films, like he is taking his love of a sequence, or a genre, or a shot etc. etc. of a film he had loved, and is merely showing us why he loves them so much. His films are very entertaining, I just feel they aren't created through some sort of pure artistic source. You could say that every director does the same, but the creative forces are so much more deep rooted and personal, he's just a guy that loves movies.

  • you should post the introduction too ^_^

  • Nature is funny, the way it balances things out.

You read a post like that and you just know here's a guy begging to give it in the ass like the macho man he is.

  • Jeez!Tarantino knows more about our local movies more than myself and I'm a bloody local.

Now I'll go back and buys all these movies and hopefully I'll catch up with him.....ha ..ha.

  • you can also rent them from netflix ^_^

  • i wish i could listen to this guy all day

  • lol arabic jungle book? sup with that?

  • You are right, QT. I got a crush on Faye Wong.

  • yo quentin when u gonna copy another chinese movie??

  • I like that Jacket !!! and all his Movies

  • I bet Tarantino was so chomping at the bit to remake Chung King Express for the USA. It's just his sense of subordinate awe for the film that would ever keep him from doing so.

He's still an asset to film however you see him though.

  • PLEASE POST ANOTHER ONE OF THESE!

do you have the Switchblade Sisters one? if so post it, i beg you

  • I just know that The Good The Bad and the Weird is simply amazing and funny

  • Are you crazy?

  • QT is a gump, he didnt make this film ass

  • tarantino's movies are good. WKW movies are awesome

  • besides the fact, that departed was copied almost every scene of infernal affairs, scorcese added more typical Hollywood scenes to the movie which werent included in IA. Which means more sex and violence

  • There were certain key scenes recreated for The Departed. I wouldn't call it a scene for scene remake.

  • @buttsurfer Scorsese's always been a violent director, and he's never shied away from sex. You say it as though he's cheapened or simplified the film, and while those two things certainly attract a bigger audience to a degree, you're ignoring the Scorsese aesthetic that brings so much energy, suspense, and care to the picture and its characters. As much as I liked IA, I thought the characters were one-dimensional, and the story too drawn out (it took three films). Remedied in The Departed.

  • @buttsurfer I think you're simplifying it too much. Is there more sex and more violence? Well yeah, but that's what you get in a Scorsese movie (though he's never been overly explicit when it comes to putting sex on film). I think Scorsese does enough to the original material that he makes it worthwhile, and just as importantly, he makes it his own. They're two different films, but I do agree with you that IA deserved more exposure, as do most films made outside North America.

  • please guys, lets not comment with insults, if you got something to say or to criticize, then do it in a more civilized way.

I was shocked by scorceses "the departed", it was a good movie, but there was definitely not enough credit given to infernal affairs, which was in my opinion way better than the departed. Its a shame infernal affairs didnt get any oscars or attention whatsoever in the US, but departed which is almost identical to infernal affairs is being praised.

  • @buttsurfer departed was the better movie. as simple as that

  • @buttsurfer you know it is possible for a remake to surpass the original. i love the dialogue in the departed, the suspenseful moments and i for one thought it was better for them to share the love interest because it said even more about identity. theyre split two ways, so is she. im not saying infernal affairs is bad, but the departed had some extra scorsese touches that made it his own

  • With all the preproduction done - or with pre-made sets - the hop 'n' chop quick way of filming has produced great films - its the way Spielberg works on most of his best popcorn movies, Raiders being a prime example.

  • If all these Korean movies were released (dubbed, since no one likes to read yellow subtitles) in US theaters they would be more succesful than then thier crappy remake counterpart.

  • Give credit where credit is due..Hollywood!!!

Get ready for a slew of Hollywood Korean remakes that will suck. My Sassy Girl, Seven Days, Failan, A Tale of Two Sisters, and Chaser just to name a few..Not to mention Lake House (II Mare Korean) Possession (Addicted) and Juno (Jenny Juno) most recent releases. Seems to me that tinsletown is out of ideas!!

  • f*ckin trolls -_-

  • a idiot a idiot honestly its an idiot you moron and try to write something original 95 oscars the best ORIGINAL screenplay something martin scorsese didnt win until 06 and he directed mean streets taxi driver and goodfellas.

tarantino a pillar of the american film community

  • It's always got to be about race..copying western films? I can go back and see where Lucas and spielberg got there ideas from old Classic Chinese films..Don't Like QT and thats just my opinion..The Oscars are one sided and only award english films and continue to shun Asian cinema..Open your eyes and mind to film outside hollywood and then you might just begin to appreciate good film making.

  • God that's funny..Will then take QTs advice and watch one of his favorite films of all time Chungking Express..

  • @Jinchengzz What??Why would you say Lucas and Spielberg got their ideas drom old Chinese film??

  • what about the departed? that was adaptation of infernal affairs a hit from the HONG KONG film industry.

which the west completley failed to give credit to, even at the oscars.

    superior? nah just imperialistic.

no one gives a F&*K about how big the west THINKS it is =)

go live in Hong Kong and learn some multiculturalism you ignorant degenerate.

  • *sigh* I could sit here in the dark, with my headphones off, just staring at Mr.Tarantino for hours and hours.........

I hope my boyfriend never reads this!!!!

    xoxoxoxoxoxoxooxoxoxo

  • Is it me or does this sound exactly like Kill Bill?

  • ashes of time..great flick

  • oh Sven828, the great one,we do bow to your superior race.how eloquent your words are and how enlightening your thoughts.if all "westerners" were like you, the world would be a beautiful place indeed.

  • i want the poster behind this guy

  • I love the movie, apart from the fact that it´s somehow in 2 parts (I love the 2nd part). Okay, maybe I didn´t get it at all...^^

  • Quentin Tarantino on Chungking Express - the dude should leave it alone.

  • RANT RANT RANT. He sounds like a total amatuer and embarrasses himself with this 'review.'

  • ok ok, Tarantino's a genius, Tarantino's a geek, good. But wait, it's WONG KAR WAI in issue here, it's Tarantino talking bout WONG KAR WAI. perhaps a bit of chat and exploring on WONG KAR WAI might be worthwhile?

  • cool geeky tarantella

  • ale ma trebline

    nawija jak po spidzie :))

  • why doesn't he review movies? He usually takes like 5 years off between films, fill e'm up on roper!

  • this guys a genious!! PULP rulz...

  • anita mui is probably huge in the 80s, but faye is certainly MASSIVE since 90s till now... and faye certainly does speak mandarin, born & bred in beijing china and has numerous great mandarin music albums... although i find qt annoying, he does know his stuff, i give him dat

  • R u talking about Faye? She is a native mandarin speaker. And she is great. Anita indeed is the "asian Madonna" but with talent. Faye? She's entirely her own. =)

  • this guy knows too much...wow!

  • hes not a nerd hes a geek... nerds wouldnt make films like pulp fiction and kill bill

  • A geek is someone who knows a lot about science or maths or something useful wheras a nerd is someone who is really into comics or movies like me. That's how it is where I'm from but they usually go hand in hand.

  • that nigga is focused

  • what a fag <3

  • Wan't this guy on Friends?

  • what a supernerd

  • I love qt!!! thnx!

  • tony leung didn't star in days of being wild; his only appearance was the cameo at the end.

  • strong body language, like a maestro.

  • Great job on fucking up the aspect ratio.

  • lol

  • His obsession is justified

  • Cool clip, thanx
