This is GREAT! I always turn up the volume when I hear this song! Originally, this song was recorded by Johnny Kidd and the Pirates, but I like the Guess Who's version the best! ROCK AND ROLL!
Shakin' All Over - The Guess Who? (Chad Allan and the Expressions) [Winnipeg, Manitoba, Canada] - 1964 - "AMG pick. Chad Allan & the Expressions recorded a cover version of Johnny Kidd's penned song." - Shakin' All Over (Sundazed)-2001.
NOTE: Johnny Kidd & the Pirates were a British rock & roll band of the late '50s and early '60s.
Burton Cummings wasn't the lead singer in this band when they recorded "Shakin' All Over" it was Chad Allan whom he edged out in 1966.
I dont give a flying F!@# that Johnny & the Pirates did it first... I love this version way better... Better singer, better arrangement... everything is just fucking better.
95% of teens these days listen to the same crappy pop songs over and over. if your one of the 5% left who still listen to real music, thunb this up, then copy and paste it to t least 5 video's. DONT LET THE SPIRIT OF ROCK AND ROLL DIE!
Yep, the Guess Who did a great job with this great track (better than Vince Taylor's version, IMHO), but I personally still prefer The Pirates' original with Johnny Kidd doing vocals. Too bad there isn't a decent video performance here on YT - at least not that I could find (lots of good audio clips though). If anyone's seen one please let me know.
@zippL0ck so do I dude, give it up, janis joplin, hendrix, steve ray vaughan, cream, there'll never be such musicians (because THEY can be called musicians) in any era... just rock on and keep on chooglin' ;P
Normie Rowe did this song when I was a child. When I was 10 I won a Sydney wide Go-Go contest and the song was part of the semifinals contest. I wish I had film of me winning in bermuda shorts and a tent top. The older girls were very annoyed that I won. O well!
Love the original version by Johnny Kidd & the Pirates, respect the version done by The Who,,,but I think this version by Chad Allen & the Expressions (AKA The Guess Who, if I'm not mistaking) is superb.
I always wondered who played this song, as I never thought it was Th Gues Who. Yeah, the singer does not sound like the same on on American Woman or No Time, for example. However, shackingly good song.
This was when Chad Allan was in the band along with Randy Bachman, Jim Kale, Gary Peterson, and Bob Ashley. Ashley left and was replaced by Burton Cummings. Cummings later led them to a harder rocking sound and the songs caused Allan's throat to get sore. Allan soon left and was replaced by Bruce Decker, who then left, making the 4-man (and most famous) lineup of Cummings, Bachman, Kale, and Peterson possible.
as i'm a mick ronson fan, it sounds like the guitar solo on this rockin' version(played by randy bachman?) was lifted, note for note, by mick, and played during bowie's version of "i can't explain", from the "pin ups" album.
you tube shenanigans continue! during a routine log in, youtube wouldn't accept my password, so, in exaspiration, i created a new account, with the same name and password. as such, all of my original, favorite videos were wiped out, and you and i will start from scratch. ok? please send me a test message. thanks!
I first thought the recording of "Shakin' All Over" in the USA was released by RCA Victor Records, however, the band did not have any records released by RCA until 1969, when Chad Allan had left the group. Instead, Scepter Records had the US rights to the single. I had also seen the song on Guess Who albums released by Springboard and MGM.
Nothing against the Scepter label, I just wished that the record had Nipper on the label.
did youget this from battlefield vietnam? this is the same version they used 4 this songs... I LOVE THIS SONG ESPECIALLY THIS VERSION!!! I LOOOOOOOOOOOVE IT
This is the BEST version of Shakin All Over. I just spent the last 45 minutes rummaging through all the other versions of this song on YouTube, and yes some of them are great of course. But The Guess Who nails this song better than any other. The vocals, guitar parts, bass and drums are amazing, and the piano adds a new level to it. The breaks are strong and right where they should be. Yep, the song may have been a hit before TGW did it, but they fucking perfected it!
@leoq114 yeah, they wqere still Chad Allen, etc. then. they got their name when they played this one multi-act show and the MC forgot who they were so he just said, "Look! . .it's guess who?" meaning he hoped the audience would recognize them, which it didn't. Next day the reviews re-christened them-
why man? Still think the original version of Johnny & the Pirates is great and the master. And, a good contemporary version is from Eilen Jewl - listen to it and you notice, that 60 years of distance from the original still keeps as young and rolling!
This song is an absolute anthem! They got it right from the second that Randy Bachman nailed that immortal guitar phrase, and Chad's vocals have never been equaled. Oh Canada!
Oh you are so right! Doesn't Randy Bachman's big orange Gretsch (Also used on "Takin' Care of Business", I believe) sound great! Oh wow, Chad Allen's vocals....right on the money. This is pretty close to the pinnacle of Canadian rock and roll and one Canadians can be proud of...Gina's right...this is one sexy song and the drums are just unbelievable on it to me. A classic that should have been bigger than it was in the States....
It was said that the orange Gretsch guitar that Randy Bachman used on Shakin' All Over was stolen, according to an interview with Bachman. However, among his collection of guitars is a Gretsch personally given to him by Chet Atkins, and Randy says he will never part with that guitar.
Thanks for the update on that...I'm thinking that he used that same Gretsch for "Takin' Care of Business" but I'm not sure.
You can bet that Randy isn't going to part with the Atkins Gretsch! lol That's one guitar that's probably worth SERIOUS money. Bet he doesn't tour with THAT one.
A nice number from the boys! Their hit before Burton Cummings joined the band. It had radio airplay in spring/summer '65 in the US. But this was a cover-the original was late '50's, and it rocked, too.
This is real rock 'en roll.
