The loss of the Colossus was the biggest WTF event I encountered in games.
Managed to blow up ALL the weapons on the Sathanas before it got into range. So basically the Colossus diced up the Sathanas without receiving 1 single hit. I was happy over the job well done, then, all of a sudden, the Colossus exploded because of battle damage it never received. I was like sure, yeah, right whatever...
The biggest immersion breaker in this game for me is that a lone fighter pilot can repel the entire Shivan invasion while the Colossus is just cannon fodder.
I'm playing on the hardest level. That makes the problem even worse.
In Freespace 2, the war would be lost if the player weren't there. The player singlehandedly saves the entire GTVA. That's even more pronounced on higher difficulties where your actions have even more of an effect.
I'm normally Reserved, But watch this with Type (The Dark Knight Theme / Hans Zimmer) running. Do it. Holy hell, it goes like hand and glove when running adjusted and running simultaneously

@TheFourStringViking Damn right! In my opinion spaceships can never be too big or too powerful but although there may be bigger ships (like the Executor or the Eclipse for example), the Colossus got a cool look on her.
I can imagine an NTF battleship with the captain saying: "All hail Akon Bo...." Colossus jumps in "Shit!!"

@TheMarine250789 another thing you need to do is hope that the game still exist if you were to be born thousand of years later:), many of the classic games were gone already...
@jbingfaII Actually, I am playing it, and yes you can take over a spaceship and do dog fights...thats a huge freaking part of it, and there's millions of different ships.
In fact, there's threads on the forum to make an RTS game FOR eve (since they've made a FPS FOR eve where you fight on planets owned by the players in eve - Dust 514)
@jbingfaII I dont make videos but just youtube eve dog fights...there's loads of them. There's a capital ship dog fight as well but I've never flown one of them (not many have) and they are huge so more stationary, look for a smaller ship type, but there's far too many different ships to list, and many rig theirs with different things some to tank damage or some with afterburners and speed. You can do everything in eve that you would expect to do in real space (and more like build on planets etc
@jbingfaII Yes, you missed everything. It's called zooming the camera in, but do tell me, how does a 3rd person view make it an RTS? Oh wait, it doesn't.
@jbingfaII You're an idiot. 1 - Read previous posts 2 - Stop dodging questions by asking another question already answered and proven 3 - Face facts. Eve is not RTS. Period. You don't even play the game yet assume you know better. So yeah, proper retarded idiot.
@jbingfaII You really are a proper retard aren't you. Where did I call it a FPS? Oh wait, I didn't you DUMB SHIT and yes, you can zoom the camera in. . How about learning to read the previous reply? Oh right, you shut your mouth for weeks hoping to "forget it". Fuck me you are completely thick. You state Eve is RTS. I am telling you, it is NOT. Period, and you would get laughed out of the game if you said that. It's called a sandbox. I've never known a youtuber so thick in the head. DERP
@jbingfaII oh and, because you're so thick, incapable of comprehending simple understandings of game mechanics and a complete waste of oxygen, that has already been owned so hard the first time you spoke and yet still repeat your incoherent dribble, you're going on ignore. I've given you the answer and it's FACT. Yours is stupidity. So blocked for being a complete and utter waste of space.
@TheMarine250789 Greatest era of gaming. Freespace 1-2, Starlancer, Freelancer, Mechwarrior 1-4, G-Police, Deus Ex, Ghost Recon, Rainbow 6. Nexus Jupiter Incident.
Freespace 2, Nexus and Freelancer will always be my favourite Space games. X3 just didnt do it. Freespace was the best Space sim, although Nexus was just as good being a cap ship sim were FS2 was a fighter sim. Freelancer was the free roaming and multilayer space game.
You would think developers would make games better by now.
The Producer of Volition told in an interview, quote: "We'd kill to make Freespace 3". So maybe there is hope for sequel: wwwdotnowgamerdotcom/news/5142/volition-wed-kill-to-make-freespace-3
...and for generations to come...ooooo they were wrong, very wrong! ;) for me also one of the best games i played all my life..so good it makes me wanna cry ;''D
Ya know, from a strrategic point of view, I'd rather have a fleet of strong ships than just one super huge ship. It's more flexible, if one of them is damaged he can be repired while the others keep fighting. While the colossus took a lot of time to repair, needd huge supply, and got outmanovred
@Kamfrenchie You'll lose to my fleet depending upon technology ;) A ship that can carry such large guns that it can out range with deadly fire-power any other ship resigns supreme. A ship like the Yamato or even Bismark could sink 100's if not 1000's of cruisers just because they could deliver a killer salvo before a cruiser even got into range. Even though the sum of fire-power and capability of all those single smaller vessels is 1000's greater.
100's ? must be exagerating a bit. But i was saying that, implying the beamns of other ships had similar range and damages.
But still. Look at the Tiger tanks of WW2. It could dstroy many russian tanks, but the russians won in the end. Their tank could swam the the tiger or avoid it and stryke supply convoy, plus they were easy to repair.
Yes, if you have man power and materials. Your right about the Tiger, but really it's a matter of ratio. SU had 50K T-34s alone compared to (I think) ~30K German tanks of every model. SU simply had too much.
Yeah FS is broken, in that capital beams are seemingly equal. It's only a game after all. But usually greater 'capitalness' makes a ship invulnerable to lesser ships by being able to one-shot-them beyond their firing range.
@CmdrTobs Well actually corvettes or cruisers were no problem for the colossus ;). Just play the mission "the sixth wonder" and see the Hawkwood an NTF Deimos class corvette going down in seconds although it warps in already damaged.
Anyway smaller ships would take an eternity to destroy a ship the size of the colossus and after all the colossus would fight back so actually a "capital sized" ship in FS IS somehow invulnerable to masses of smaller capital ships ;).
what makes this cutscene work so well for me is both the voice over and the great text. When he speaks about the contractors, I'm sold. It's so immersive it's amazing
Still one of the best game cutscenes I've ever seen! It's so well done and having Kurtwood Smith as a voice over was the perfect choice! Shame they don't make games like these anymore.
I learned how to fly a Mirmidon before I knew my times tables! I knew every part of this cutscene by heart! I loved this game growing up, and I love the open ending. Years later I still consider myself fortunate to have had the pleasure of playing this game!
Oh and personally, I liked the GTD Aquitane more then the colossus. Admiral Petrarch's lines were better than Command's were.
Violation got bought buy THQ or something, so that's also why it didn't made a FS3. but check out Hard Light Production with the Freespace Open Source Project. Huge graphic improvements, fan-made campaigns, some are very well done! Almost professional!
@Thescott1233 well, it took 20 years and a massive amount of resources to build that one. I doubt, they had the resources to do it again, after their planets were destroyed and the link to Earth was cut.
@thedragon133 mineral resources are practically a non-issue for a spacefaring alliance like the GTVA. The asteroid belts of Sol alone have more resources packed in them than mankind could hope to utilize in tens of thousand of years. As practically every star likely has a debris belt like that.. well, you do the math.
It's more likely monetary and human resources that are limiting the GTVA here ;)
20 years to build and it was lost in just a few seconds to a Sathanas. And it turned out the Sathanas juggernaught isn't some unique supership (like the Colossus), it's an AVERAGE MAINSTREAM vessel in the Shivan fleet! Oh man, we never had a chance. Ahhh I love Freespace. What other game offers such a depressing demonstration of humanity's insignificance in the universe?
One of the things that keeps the game on my hdd to play every few years... The exposition and buildup for the Shivans is completely engrossing. i love the way the encounters unfold: "oh shit, bad guys -> hah, not so tough after all -> oh shit, we're in trouble -> haha, triumph!-> oh oh holy fuck, run!->aww hell yeah we won->oh, my god, we don't stand a chance-> ohhh holy fuck, how did we survive that?"
absolutely incredible story writing skills went into this game...
You are now my most favorite person ever. I could not remember what the name of this game was. All I remembered was that somewhere you had to blow up the colossus and it was in space and stuff.
I never liked the GTVA Colossus either, I mean I loved this cutscene but it's a predictable twist and a classic military mistake, build something very big, put all your eggs in the same basket and you'll lose everytime, as proof, we could not save the GTVA Colossus, it was predictably destroyed.
Even so, the Freespace series is old, but nothing was ever made to replace it, in that way, it's timeless.
I absolutely loved this video... It is pretty much the BEST way to say "This is the biggest possible boot we could build to kick your ass with" - and in the few missions it appeared in, it did.
It's awesome because it's a long, drawn-out brief full of awesome in-universe speak and technobabble that can basically be summed up with a single word.
Anyone here ever play Echelon? Was a Commodore 64 game and one of the first to allow the player to use a headset. I think it was Echelon. May have been Elite tho. It's been a few years. Heh...
I can also remeber sitting right next to the hull of this and shooting at it with my fighter -> i got the hull down to 97% before i got bored/the game crashed on my ancient computer :)
Your crew is shown us of which we have made, and Vasudans Terrans fought shoulder to shoulder, knowing well that they will not survive, but willing to give their lives without hesitation to otherssurvive. My heart cried when Colossss did last stand. I'll just say that it was a good ship with the best crew in the entire GTVA. Let him and he and his crew in peace. RIP
The scary thing is that in 2345 which is the year this happend in the game... Flying ships and space battles might even happen in our wolrd! they are exteremely accurate time wise.
the 'lol' part is how they were only able to build only ONE single superdestroyer & made such a big deal of it, when the shivans (who weren't hindered by an economic system) were able to spawn off several dozens of their own superdestroyers
whoa, 12 lucifers....the lucifer and EVA were fucking huge in Freespace one, i heard that some ships are even bigger then that in FS2 but MIGHTY FUCK! I have to find this game!!!
indeed, when I frist saw the Eva and the Lucifer in FS1 I freezed in horror :P And after that the Colossus and the Sathanas..... Guess it could take dozens of bombers to take down one of them -.-
the most impressive game which I was played recently is modernwarfare2 and It's a really really greatgame. but still, I can call freespace2 is the best. is it possible that I can play next series before I'm lying in a coffin?
They wasted 20 years on a big ass ship when in the end it didn't matter. The amount of SJ's they had at the star was pretty much saying they could wipe out anyone at anytime. I'm sure FS3 would have started with the rebuilding progress like in FS2, but this time more advanced tech and they finally contact earth and 30 years later the fight is on again etc.. I think in the end we would be wiped out by the shiven force or we can make peace like bosch did.
if you remember, the colossus held the line against a Sathannas long enough to get the job done... so it kind of fulfilled its objective many times over. It was designed to counter the lucifer class. A job is was MORE than suited for. The whole point of its destruction was to drill home just how DEEP the shit the GTVA was in was. It may have been a failure from a tactical standpoint, but from a plot standpoint it was mightily effective I think you will agree :)
At least it managed to take down one Sathanas before it's bitter end. Wherever the Shivans come from - it's obvious their empire has far more resources than the GTVA.. In number one it was like fighting a task force - in 2 it's like you're trying to take down a full fledged Shivan armada. It would have been interesting to see what happened in a third game - but I guess we just have to content ourselves with a cliffhanger ending. I guess we're lucky this game even got made.
The Colossus should take only 6 or 8 years to construct. I mean, 20 years?! Even in present-day standards it can't take 20 years to make an entire town!
If you're building said town with experimental technology that is untested and more than likely error-prone, you may. There have probably been several iterations of failed Colossuses before the one we see in the game emerged...
the colossus is 6000 metres long and several hundred metres tall and wide, packed with huge machinary and core components ... the largest vessel on earth today (the Knock Nevis) is less than 500m long and mostly empty space ... it takes time to contruct something that big
@LazyMofo69 I lvoe this game. I even have the new version of this game which allows cheats. I can give you oen if you want. This version also gives much better graphics.
My first reaction to the Colossus was more like 'hey, it's a flying rifle'. :P Still, the Colossus was an awesome ship to, and that cutscene just made it all the more legendary. For me, I felt like 'yes, glad to be on this side of the GTVA and not the other', considering the fact the Colossus itself was pretty much the army of destroyers and then some. People talk about 'cost effectiveness', and yet that one ship did more than an army of destroyers and fighters did.
On the name thing in freespace - i was kinda loled when in middle of a huge battle, ships blowing everywhere a shivan destroyer jumped in and my wingmate alpha 2 said something like: A DESTROYER JUST JUMPED IN, DESIGNATION ASTAROTH ! :D :D he mustve been genius imho :D
Not smart that it only launches bombers and fighters. Such a ship should be able to house cruisers and corvettes as well. In such a massive thing you could easily forget your actually inside a ship.
This ship is like "winning a battle in cost of the war" and reminds me of other super weapon projects like the Japanese Yamato Battle Cruise (actually build) or the German P1000 Landcruiser (not build)
The loss of the Colossus was the biggest WTF event I encountered in games.
Managed to blow up ALL the weapons on the Sathanas before it got into range. So basically the Colossus diced up the Sathanas without receiving 1 single hit. @jbingfaII Actually, I am playing it, and yes you can take over a spaceship and do dog fights...thats a huge freaking part of it, and there's millions of different ships.
In fact, there's threads on the forum to make an RTS game FOR eve (since they've made a FPS FOR eve where you fight on planets owned by the players in eve - Dust 514)
it's not RTS.
Bububaps 8 months ago
@Bububaps Do you have a youtube video to send me with a dog fight in eve online where you take command of a fighter?
jbingfaII 8 months ago
@jbingfaII I dont make videos but just youtube eve dog fights...there's loads of them. There's a capital ship dog fight as well but I've never flown one of them (not many have) and they are huge so more stationary, look for a smaller ship type, but there's far too many different ships to list, and many rig theirs with different things some to tank damage or some with afterburners and speed. You can do everything in eve that you would expect to do in real space (and more like build on planets etc
Bububaps 8 months ago
@Bububaps send me the link dude
jbingfaII 7 months ago
@jbingfaII just checked, most of what i saw was dog fight through a third person camera... Freespace allows first person combat...
Let me know in case i missed anything...
:)
jbingfaII 8 months ago
@jbingfaII Yes, you missed everything. It's called zooming the camera in, but do tell me, how does a 3rd person view make it an RTS? Oh wait, it doesn't.
And still, it's not an RTS.
Bububaps 8 months ago
@Bububaps Do u have a video that shows Eve Online Fight through a 3 Person Camera Zoomed In?
jbingfaII 8 months ago
@jbingfaII You're an idiot. 1 - Read previous posts 2 - Stop dodging questions by asking another question already answered and proven 3 - Face facts. Eve is not RTS. Period. You don't even play the game yet assume you know better. So yeah, proper retarded idiot.
Bububaps 8 months ago
@Bububaps lol...
You still have not given me a Link with Eve Online as a First Person Shooter...
Anyway...
Ta...
jbingfaII 7 months ago
@jbingfaII You really are a proper retard aren't you. Where did I call it a FPS? Oh wait, I didn't you DUMB SHIT and yes, you can zoom the camera in. . How about learning to read the previous reply? Oh right, you shut your mouth for weeks hoping to "forget it". Fuck me you are completely thick. You state Eve is RTS. I am telling you, it is NOT. Period, and you would get laughed out of the game if you said that. It's called a sandbox. I've never known a youtuber so thick in the head. DERP
Bububaps 7 months ago

Ya know, from a strrategic point of view, I'd rather have a fleet of strong ships than just one super huge ship. It's more flexible, if one of them is damaged he can be repired while the others keep fighting. While the colossus took a lot of time to repair, needd huge supply, and got outmanovred
Kamfrenchie 1 year ago
@Kamfrenchie You'll lose to my fleet depending upon technology ;) A ship that can carry such large guns that it can out range with deadly fire-power any other ship resigns supreme. A ship like the Yamato or even Bismark could sink 100's if not 1000's of cruisers just because they could deliver a killer salvo before a cruiser even got into range. Even though the sum of fire-power and capability of all those single smaller vessels is 1000's greater.
The carrier proved even better at this task.
CmdrTobs 1 year ago
@CmdrTobs
100's ? must be exagerating a bit.
Kamfrenchie 1 year ago
@Kamfrenchie
With a proper picket, it's not an exaggeration.
CmdrTobs 1 year ago
@CmdrTobs Well actually corvettes or cruisers were no problem for the colossus ;). Just play the mission "the sixth wonder" and see the Hawkwood an NTF Deimos class corvette going down in seconds although it warps in already damaged.
Anyway smaller ships would take an eternity to destroy a ship the size of the colossus and after all the colossus would fight back so actually a "capital sized" ship in FS IS somehow invulnerable to masses of smaller capital ships ;).

All that aside, why didn't build more than one?
Thescott1233 1 year ago
@Thescott1233 well, it took 20 years and a massive amount of resources to build that one. I doubt, they had the resources to do it again, after their planets were destroyed and the link to Earth was cut.
thedragon133 1 year ago

SteelScream88 1 year ago 6
I never liked the GTVA Colossus either, I mean I loved this cutscene but it's a predictable twist and a classic military mistake, build something very big, put all your eggs in the same basket and you'll lose everytime, as proof, we could not save the GTVA Colossus, it was predictably destroyed.
Even so, the Freespace series is old, but nothing was ever made to replace it, in that way, it's timeless.

I think in the end we would be wiped out by the shiven force or we can make peace like bosch did.
picardshero 2 years ago
if you remember, the colossus held the line against a Sathannas long enough to get the job done... so it kind of fulfilled its objective many times over. It was designed to counter the lucifer class. A job is was MORE than suited for. The whole point of its destruction was to drill home just how DEEP the shit the GTVA was in was. It may have been a failure from a tactical standpoint, but from a plot standpoint it was mightily effective I think you will agree :)
joehind1670 2 years ago 8
@joehind1670 I will agree on that point.

Even in present-day standards it can't take 20 years to make an entire town!
marcovaaa 2 years ago 2
If you're building said town with experimental technology that is untested and more than likely error-prone, you may. There have probably been several iterations of failed Colossuses before the one we see in the game emerged...

AegisKHAOS 2 years ago 4
On the name thing in freespace - i was kinda loled when in middle of a huge battle, ships blowing everywhere a shivan destroyer jumped in and my wingmate alpha 2 said something like: A DESTROYER JUST JUMPED IN, DESIGNATION ASTAROTH ! :D :D he mustve been genius imho :D

Not smart that it only launches bombers and fighters. Such a ship should be able to house cruisers and corvettes as well. In such a massive thing you could easily forget your actually inside a ship.
