There is something to that - nostalgia, habit, etc.

However, today there is so much music that is just product. TAD would have never made it on MTV, because of their subject matter too - drunk driving on ice (Jack Pepsi), drugs (Lycanthrope). You can just imagine MTV executives going over the potential lawsuits.

But there has always been corporate product 'music'. Back in the late 80s it was hair bands, big hat country, 'christian' rock, etc.

the grunge SCENE faded away from the mainstream for many reasons as so many music trends do after a while and the mainstream gets bored. I'd say the last good year of grunge was '96 when soundgarden and screaming trees' final studio albums were released. Grunge is still around of course, just nowhere near the height of popularity it reached in the early ninties. Maybe it'll come back some day, hopefully.
