I think you are confusing 'life' with 'humanity'. The 'spark' is pure life energy, however a human is a specific alchemy of life.
Honestly, I don't think a dog, cat, or bug is void of the spark. However, that spark isn't expressed in a manner which in turn looks back upon the spark and recognizes it.
