  • Great job ! I'm so jealous !

  • Forget that post I made a mistake my bad people.

  • I think its funny, because this sounds nothing like when I saw the Hollywood Bowl Les Miserables in 2008 when she happened to play Eponine, way better then.

  • oh no..she just butchered the song

  • ayayayayayayay! jsut finished listening to Lea Salonga..and then i listend to this... Michelle sounds off key ..try listening to lea first and then this....Michelle just sounds off key or trying hard...:(

  • Thumbs down! No emotion, whatsoever. And there's a difference between belting out a song (which is what Samantha does) and screaming (which is what Lea does).

Thanks, Lea, for slaughtering one of my favorite songs!!!

  • @obsessedbookwormM2Z it was done for the pilot episode

  • Not as good as lea or Samantha!!!!!!!! She's not always as good as she thinks she is!

  • @123mrsdaisy lol

  • What episode did they do this?

  • @RDR072708 First i think.

  • @RDR072708 it wasn;t done for an episode I believe...She was asked to sing it for one of the numerous productions of Les Mis that have been produced

  • i have to see an e.n.t specialist after hearing this horrible version. u owe me 100 bucks bitch u broke my ear

  • lea is the best better than west end! starz and all the rest she is great!

  • @aviemonkey No, she's really not. I've seen Les Mis in the West End many times and she doesn't comapre to any Eponine I've seen there or anywhere else. However, she is much better than Alexia Khadime, the current Eponine. Alexia would have ruined the whole show for me if not for the rest of the cast being so brilliant.

She sings it well, but there's no emotion and that's what's needed to sing this song. It's not just a song, it's from a musical meaning it's telling a story.

  • this isnt a Lea Salonga video! This is Lea Michele!! so sit back and relax and stop comparing the two and just enjoy such a perfect song!

  • Best versions of this song

    1) Lea Salonga (Of course)

    2) Samantha Barks

    3) Lea Michele

  • @1:02 She Looks Jus Like A Female Finch LMFAO

  • good but no spectacular. I think she needed to put more passion.

  • she is good i love this nummer

  • the song is great. its my favorite in Les Miserables. Not a bad version, but I can't help but think it fell short (by a mile!) when compared to what I've always heard from Lea Salonga. So believe it when we say the Broadway version is infinitely much better than all other renditions of this song and you'd do yourself a favor listening to the broadway versions of the songs because if it didn't, we wouldn't pushed it too far won't we?

  • Many thanks for accepting my video! I love this song!!!!

  • Lea Salonga will always be the best eponine and her version of this song is legendary... but this version of Lea Michele i really like it too. she sung it well.

  • omg this is just horrible, this is a disgrase to Les Miserables!

  • @xidiotbox The writers for Glee didn't have Lea sing it because it relates to Rachel. It's a song for her audition for New Directions. Also, this song is about unrequited love. It's a universal theme. It's not Eponine's biography put to music.

  • Can we take a moment and get the producers of glee to fuck themselves? they can't say that character in glee is about to get fucking shot, or that shes loved the same person since she was child, or that she grew up with a thief such as thenardier as a father. To truly capture the spirit of this song, you need to be fucking eponine. not some bitch in holywood.

  • This is a fucking disgrace to Les Miserables.

  • Beautiful beautiful beautiful voice. All of them sing the SHIT out of this song, but nothing will ever measure up to Lea Salonga for me :)

  • I mean everyone says this person is better and it's annoying. I don't really want to come here to see not as good as ___ as the top comment.. it's bullshit people don't do that to the originals. Lea did amazing she doesn't have the same emotion as Salonga.. duh.. She did a great job and I like her voice more.. just a preference. I feel as Lea sings it she starts out you know kinda sad and she just gets more sad as she realizes this isn't going to work.

  • Auditioning for Oliver! with this version of this song :)

  • 71 people have very good reason to dislike this...

  • @AlexBurkeNo1Fan and 440 have a fabulous reason for liking it

  • Glee always has to ruin all the good songs....

  • the only thing that is similar is the first name of the performer, Lea, nothing much, I prefer the voice and entonation of Salonga

  • I actually much prefer her take than Lea Salonga. Sorry!!!!!!!!! I just feel like she was so angry, whereas Lea Michelle sings with unrequited love..

  • Isnt lea Michele amazing...

  • LUV IT!!:)

  • @EverywhereLemons I mean.. your looking for emotion which hers grew toward the end.. as the song should.. its wrote as shes all he'll never be with me and stuff so starting off with slight emotion and ending with more is better than most people do.. same emotion throughout the song. What is good.. is what sounds good to YOUR ears. everyone is different.

  • @Gleek1able Honey, I was being nice in my last comment. Yes, her emotion does grow towards the end, but there's not enough. Honestly, compared to how it should be done, she's shouting out the lyrics. Her voice is naturally too harsh for this some. Judging my your name, you probably only know this song from glee. If you'd actually seen how it's done on les mis, you'd feel the same. I don't just mean the soundtrack. It's not bad, I've said that, she's a good singer. But not this song.

  • @EverywhereLemons Not enough emotion is a preference.. she can sing it for a TV show however she wants to.. she wasn't shouting at all I don't think its harsh at all. Ive seen Lea Salonga do it. Like Leas voice more.. I take french and have been for some time.. I know the musical.. :)

  • @Gleek1able Have you seen it though? Seeing it changes things. I know it's a TV show and it's different, but they should stick to pop songs etc. Frances Ruffelle was the original Eponine, and she was incredible (IMO, better than Lea). I know a lot of people think comparing is wrong, but I don't. When someone sets the bar high, it should stay there, and this doesn't reach it, I'm sorry but it doesn't. It's good, but it sounds wrong.

  • @Gleek1able I don't mean wrong in a totally horrible way. If you'd never seen Les Mis, I can see why you'd be happy with it. But once you've seen it, popularised versions just sound emotionless. Not just this one, most of the versions I've heard that weren't done by an Eponine don't sound right. I really really didn't like their version of I dreamed a dream. That one I don't think is good at all.

  • @EverywhereLemons I get it you're kind of one of them people that once it's done on broadway you should only touch it if its on broadway. I have seen it. I just love Lea Micheles voice. I respect your opinion. What did you think of their version of 'Somewhere'?

  • @Gleek1able Yeah I suppose I am :P but for me it's the west end considering that's where I go for musicals etc. She has a good voice, I just don't like it for this song, so I respect you're opinion, and I agree that she has a good voice. I actually liked somewhere. I thought it was over done, but that's expected from Glee, but I liked it. I'm just picky about Les Mis songs mainly because it's my favourite musical :)

  • I think that she was okay. It's a hard song to sing and we should give her some slack. It's an amazing song sang by a great arist. Imagine if YOU were being givin horrible comments like You suck! I think she is pretty good and all of you are intitled to your opinion and mine is that she did very well.

  • Someone's got an uncle bingo for Ms Michele.

  • @DanMegTV Either one of them...

  • @czarssalad You didn't spell her name right? Lol

  • leah salonga has been singing/performing even before leah michelle was born.... no comparison :D

  • lea michele all the way!

  • I think she did a great job.. you all need to get this thought that glee is saying it's better than everyone else out of your head. Okay Lea can't sing this as good as some of her 'elders' but look up My Man.. the only person in my opinion who can sing that better than Lea is Barbra back when she did the musical!

  • her voice is kinda irritating sometimes

  • Comment removed

  • I recently saw Chasten Harmon perform this song and I believe that she was WAY better than Michele. Harmon brought more sadness into this song. Much more beliveable I'd love to see a video of Harmon singing this song.

  • This is okay, I mean it's not terrible. It just feels too bright for me. It should be a little darker in my opinion..

  • LEA BALOGNA

  • @Symbol0fResistance Lea salonga smart stuff

  • Anyone who called Lea's singing horrible.....just listen to Katie Holmes verison of this song....;)

  • not as good as Lea SAlonga!! :-)

  • @TobyGoTv No one is as good as Lea Salonga

  • @TobyGoTv

Lea Salonga is in her OWN league. Plus, Lea S. doesn't squeak every other word

  • So the directors of Les Miserables need to hear this and say Lea michele you get the part :) She would make an amazing Eponine just in general. Taylor Swift needs to just not be considered because she had no experience and no talent. LEA MICHELE ALL THEY WAY! :)

  • No comparison when I say I just don't like this version. I'm not a fan of her voice in this song, or hearing her breathe, or how loud her voice got to the point I ripped off my headphone.

  • @QueenSnowballa agree!!!

  • It'd be better with a full orchestral accompaniment.

  • Wait, was there a whole Les Mis episode? If there was, then I've got to find it...... I absolutely love this song, and I'm going to sing it for an audition in 16 days.

  • @BigTimeStoryTeller Nope. This was in the very first episode. Only Les Miz song they've done.

  • @MaryOttMusic They've done I Dreamed a Dream, too.

  • @MaryOttMusic Oh, okay. But I just saw that 'I Dreamed a Dream' done by Glee- (it was Rachel with her mom) so..... I'm going to go and look for the full first episode.

  • Lea Michele, I admire her to a performance like this, she sings great and we need not to compare her to Lea Salonga. They are both good and well respected person, so in short we should always be proud of them who gave us entertainment in our saddest days.

  • @walt1696 I've seen all your overrated idol's videos. She's not that good at all. And the videos have all been trashed by YOU, who obviously marked SPAM all comments you didn't like, you troll!

  • @walt1696 Duh! Sutton Foster is the most OVERRATED actress on Broadway! Undeserved awards for mediocre acting in non-challenging roles! Lea Michele is more talented and is way more popular than your nobody idol!

  • I so agree with you Lea is amazing !

  • Hmm, better than I expected.

  • I do expect that they can sing...but remember that they are playing the role of high school students. Just because real stars have appeard on the show does not mean that those actors who are playing the roles of the high school kids are supposed to sound like they just stepped off of the Broadway stage. They're supposed to sound like high school kids in a Glee club.

  • Her voice is really nice- but I was hoping for a little more impact- she did become more pleasing as far as impact as the song progressed though- somewhat .o.

  • She is not a bad singer at all.I just think this song does not suite her voice.I imagine eponine as someone, walking in the dark, singing to herself - sweet and gentel.Lea Michele is yelling too much. This is not a powerful song,it is almost a ballad,no need for the strong, yelling voice.

  • lea cantan hermossssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssooo,no me canso de escuchar su voz

  • love the song but HATE lea michelle or however the heck you spell her name...her voice is pretty good though...can't hate that.

  • love the pictures!

  • I just saw les mes again today. My friend played Emiline. This was undoutedly one of the best songs in the whole musical. Emiline was my third role i ever played, she is also one of my fave i have ever played. But, Lea can do way better than both my friend and i. <3

  • Well you clearly havent watched the Pilot episode when she sings this, then youd understand why she sang it.

  • The only glee song that doesn't suck besides I dreamed a Dream I love Idena Menzel!!!!!!

  • @LitleTitel2 clearly you haven't listened to all of their songs

  • @Gothunkogirl13 I have. My school is pretty much filled with geeks. I like Lea Michelle she is a wonderful singer.

  • @LitleTitel2 ..just wonderful, because brilliant is the best..

  • I think some of you are REALLY missing the point. The cast of Glee is not trying to recreate Broadway. Glee is about a bunch of high school kids. HIGH SCHOOL KIDS. They like to sing. How on earth can you compare this to what professionals do? When you were in high school did you find kids who sang like Barbra Streisand? They're supposed to sing like high school kids. Take it as that.

  • @cabsep They have gotten a few Broadway names as regulars, like Lea Michele, Matthew Morrison and Jenna Ushkowitz. Then in season 3 StarKid actor Darren Criss became a regular. So you would expect that these people could sing as they performed live.

  • So people are going to try to insult Samantha Barks????? Dude this is autotuned to make it sound better and it still stinks.......

  • no... no, No, NO. NO! NO! NO! NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO!!!!!

    ...It's actually not that bad.

  • I don't like how Glee makes all these beautiful Broadway songs cheesy. Ugh!

  • @jgardell .i used to watch GLEE and stopped watching after 4 episodes..Lea Michelle's voice is getting annoying and she is becoming OA...the songs, they are ruining the songs!

  • @jacquery SOO TRUE. She has ruined this song, no emotion what to ever, she was screeching, that "Never known note" that was basically a scream, not a note. she's grasping for breathe, come on,she's just someone who became famous for a audition, she's not a opera or a stage opera singer. Glee, needs to stop. I couldn't even listen to this right through it's terrible The only good song Glee has done is Journeys song Don't stop Believing But this version of the song is just AWFUL. Not to sound mean

  • @JadeShawty1997 How do you thinkg opera or stage singers got famous? Do you think they didn't audition? Also: Lea Michelle WAS a stage singer: she played young Cosette several times on Broadway, as well as a role written specifically for her in Spring Awakening.

  • @JadeShawty1997 Oh.. I guess Lea should wipe off playing Young Cosette on broadway when she was 8.. and originating the main role in Spring Awakening for 2 years. She didn't screech your honestly and idiot if you think that. Gasping for BREATH? Nope.. she has emotion.. your just to much of a cold hearted bias bitch coming here knowing you wouldn't like it compared to precious Salonga.. seriously get a life.

  • HORRIBLE.

  • A very weak rendition, too. She doesn't have an inch of the talent Ruffelle and Salonga have.

  • Her voice is as unappealing as her face. An overrated performer.

  • Dear god, why does glee need to fuck up everything?

  • Why is everyone comparing her to Lea Salonga? The point is not to try to be Lea Salonga but to try to bring something of your own to the song. Of course Salonga is amazing. But this is not her version. Try to appreciate it for what it is. And Michele's version is beautiful too.:)

  • @hurd98 Yeah i agree with you, Lea Salonga is good, yes, but this isn't her version, if you compare a piece of cardboard to a peice of paper, there's alot of differences, just like ppl too. She sounds beautiful, and so does lea salonga but we shouldnt compare them, they are really different

So... whooooo to her and everyone else i guess........... :)

  • @hurd98 Great impression of a twelve year old. Was this for Sesame street?

  • @Aerohog1 Darling, I would not start a war I could not win.

  • @hurd98 Good point, and aside from that, she wasn`t acting in Les Mis at the time. She was singing a song from Les Mis while acting in Glee, as Rachel Berry, a character Lea Michele plays to tremendous effect. The frame of mind you are in when singing because of a character you are playing has impact on the song as well. People often forget that when comparing renditions of any song - particularly ones from a classic, like Les Miserables.

  • @HolaSoyMilk ..thumbs down,,im sorry it didnt get to my nerves..she is breaking and gasping for breath..this is better to be heard in the studio or small group of people..and seriously need vocal lessons if she wants to pull this off in a proper way..there is no feelings there at all..at least she tried:)

  • @hurd98 lea salonga makes this look like a sad excuse for shit! lea michele should stick to communtity theatre

  • @hurd98 When "Glee" covered this song they were asking to be compared. Anyone covering a song is offering comparison, and while the point is usually to bring something new and/or sound better, a lot of people find Lea Salonga's version better. Personally, (and I say personally) I find their cover's to be a little auto-tuned for my taste. Lea has the natural talent and classic version that I don't think "Glee" brings to this song.

    Just my two cents.

  • @kourtneyandhearts GLEE technically did not cover it if I am correct. Lea was asked to perform this song in one of the numerous versions of Les Mis that have been produced

  • @hurd98 Yes I agree! I like both! They each have unique versions!

  • sustained notes off!!!

  • Eh. Good. But not compared to Lea... Sorry, but Lea Michele will always be "Lea number two" when it comes to renditions of this song...

  • Stop criticizing and comparing and just listen. Of course she's not going to sound like Lea Salonga, she has a different voice.. She made the song her own and brilliantly. She sings it with such passion and emotion. So stop complaining. :)

  • Not TERRIBLE....but c'mon. No one compares to Lea Salonga or Samantha Barks

  • @defythewesternsky hear hear!

  • @defythewesternsky Lea Salonga OR Samantha Barks??! Since when did Samantha Barks become comparable with Lea Salonga? No one compares to Lea Salonga, period.

This is a studio recording of a "popularized" version of a Broadway classic for a TV show and is pretty good for what it is -- definitely better than "Not TERRIBLE". Anybody who hasn't heard Lea Salonga should be perfectly happy with it.

  • @catch699 Actually, I have heard many versions of this song, including Lea Michelle's and Lea Salonga and frankly, I like this one a lot more than I like Lea Salonga's.

  • @catch699 Well clap because Lea didn't get the role.. everyone thought taylor did.. but no.. Samantha will be playing Eponine in the movie.

  • @catch699 I have heard Lea Salonga and yet I still like this quite a bit you pretentious douche. I love Lea Salonga but people should stop overhyping her. The best Eponine will always be Frances anyway, she originated the role and so far nobody has nailed it like she did.

And Lea Michele is also a Broadway vet (and when she sang this she still had it) so that of "popularized" version of a Broadway classic is just idiotic. For someone who pretends to know so much, you know very little.

  • @defythewesternsky

Lea Salonga is the boss, but Samantha? Samantha is no better than Lea Michele, both of whom are talented as well :)

  • @defythewesternsky Too true

  • happiniiiiiis? ahahahaha.

  • She only went flat 2 times and sharp 4 read the sheet music and then say because you have no idea IDIOTS ;D

  • Lea is so smooth -I wish she would not belt it out---Silk Octone-Don't push it out so hard---Just easy -smooth----comes with age--Aka Our Queen Barbara--better now than ever---just a thought--I lol Lea Michelle Thank-You Angel-awesome--

  • Love this song, one of my favorites, but unfortunately she goes flat AND sharp on sustained notes. It's actually painful!

  • Love this song, one of my favorites, but unfortunately she goes flat AND sharp on sustained notes.

  • Lea S. is still better....

  • I like Lea Salonga's rendition more than this... But I do like them both...

  • @lyramax1 But honestly, how could this truly move anyone to tears or what ever if it's just the song and not the person in full blown character? That's a rhetorical question.

  • @lyramax1 Ok i don't know your tone, but when you asked whether or not liking this version is me implying that you have no soul. Well it comes off defensive and rhetorical.

  • @lyramax1 This version? I was telling you that if you don't like this version maybe you should have seen her play Eponine in 2007. I was in the audience and yes that would move anyone with a soul. This version is neither Lea Michele or Eponine. Read carefully next time before you get your panties in a bunch.

  • @lyramax1 well than if this doesn't move you...you should have watched her perform this at the hollywood bowl as Epinone in 2007.

That would move anyone with a soul.

  • Oh my god, I wish she still sang like on Glee. She scoops now. A lot.

  • I think her face portays the emotion more so than her voice. A good singer, and good acress, together they're gold!

  • I feel like Lea Salogna has much more emotion ... i hate this girl in glee i think she isnt very good .. it hurts to listen to her LOL

  • This is good, not great. And to anyone who compares this to Lea Salonga's rendition and say it is much better must be deaf! Lea Salonga's version is spot-on amazing. Lea Michele/Rachel Berry's over-enunciation is annoying to me, especially when she sings "I know that he is blaaaaaAAAYND". What in the world.

  • @jotjotzZz What in the world? Lea Michele sang this at the Hollywood Bowl when she played Eponine and i could hear the people next to me sobbing because it was so beautiful. Lea Michele is a fantastic actress and soprano. You realize she played Wendla in the musical that one several tony awards in 2007? Lea Michele is incomparable in her own right.

  • @nessaacosta Hi nessa, I know of Lea Michele's Broadway accomplishments, I did saw her on Spring Awakening, and she's amazing. I'm just saying that this particular rendition is really not so good. It's a bit annoying to me, maybe because it's 'Glee-ified'. If anyone has to compare Lea's rendition the closest is probably Suttton Foster's, just my opinion.

  • @jotjotzZz This is Rachel Berry and not Lea Michele. In a way it is a bit Glee-ified. Sure no one can touch Lea Salonga, so people need pardon my French, stfu about Lea S vs Lea M if they truly feel that their is no comparison. This is a Glee version not a Lea Salonga version. Lea Salonga did make it what it is, but let's not forget that hundreds have played the role of Eponine and i'm sorry, but the song does not belong to Lea S. Everyone needs to making everything a comparison.

  • @jotjotzZz If you want to hear over-enunciation search for the Samantha Barks version and you would hear that it's worse.

  • let's all be friends (:

  • Lea Salonga is truly incomparable. So it makes none sense to listen to this song with the expectation that it will compare to Salonga's rendition. Fact is, we are listening to Rachel Berry covering a Les Mis classic. This is NOT Lea Michele covering Lea Salonga. It seems like common sense, but apparently far too many people tend to forget that Rachel Berry is a CHARACTER played by Lea Michele and not the PERSONA of Lea Michele--STARK difference between the two.

  • When I hear this, i just hear a song, when I hear Lea Salonga singing it, I feel the song. This is lacking emotion, there's more to a song than just hitting the right notes.

  • You people need to realize that this is television not stage. If she was doing this on stage, it would be a totally different story. There is not better or worse. They're both amazing for the genre it is. Television and stage is totally different Especially Glee. This should be expected of this song. Jeez people. Lay off of her!

  • 0:58 wtf?

  • I love this version. it doesn't compare to seeing it live (like in a production of les mis) but this is still really great.

  • Probably shouldn't have listened to this after Lea Salonga...she's okay. It seems more emotion is put into the high notes than the rest of the song.

  • stop hating on glee....if you prefer lea salonga's version then go listen and comment on that....

  • glee version sucks.. i prefer lea salonga's

  • For all the people who claim she is screaming in the song... She is NOT screaming, shes belting. Belting means that you sing a large note loudly and with lots of force, and screaming is well, screaming...

  • Sorry to Lea but I love Lea's version than this glee's (I mean Lea Salonga's)

  • this is wrong sorry but u shouldnt put great songs such as this to a screechy singer like her learn from salonga

  • Very elementary, nasal voice, screeching on high notes. Learn from Lea Salonga,

diction and expression perfect, standard for all who will sing this song.

  • This song just isn't for her. Sad to say, but just because a singer can hit high notes doesn't mean they can sing everything. :/ I'll rate this as a meh.

  • great, now I have to find @sunfireThu's comment

  • I think Lea Michele is very talented and I can hear all the emotion in her voice clearly.I respect that Glee wants to change Broadway songs to a pop style to add their own creativity to it.That I understand. What bothers me is when other people change Broadway songs to a pop style because they think it's better that way. And it's even more bothersome because they get away with it since people these days are fans of pop songs. There are plenty of pop songs.Don't ruin what's unique about Broadway.

  • @schoolplaystars1214 i do agree however she still sings this song in quite a classical way, glee is good because it shows broadway to a generation of people who have no idea that it even exists, for example when lea sung dont rain on my parade my younger sister asked me about it, she then rented funny girl and has watched it about 6 times..

  • she's actually played eponine before and she did much better than this version
