Oh man... Thank you for posting this!!! My first concert ever was the Beach Boys, in July 1996 in Toronto. My dad and I went, had an AWESOME time, and I am *so* glad we got to see the incredible Carl Wilson live. I feel so lucky for that.
The very last time we hear Carl sing in full health. I find it very interesting that not one--one--of his '97 appearances have been uploaded on You Tube. In a way, I'm glad; in another, I think I'd be ready to hear/ see him from that last tour. Hmmm--maybe not. Wolfsky9
@Wolfsky9 I am looking for the concert that The Beach Boys performed in Tulsa, Oklahoma the same year as this. I was at their '96 concert in Tulsa Oklahoma
The last time a healthy, vibrant Carl is captured in concert. for those of you lucky enough to be there, what a blessing--bittersweet though it is now--to have been there, If we had only known. Wolfsky9
Mike did contribute by writing some fine lyrics in the band's earlier days (e.g. The Warmth Of The Sun, Fun, Fun, Fun, etc.) ( I mean no disrespect to Mike) but if he had to rely solely on his vocal abilities, let's face it, he'd be selling used cars in Pacoima if not for the fact that he 's the Wilson's cousin.
there have been mild rumors of a Beach Boys 50th anniversary in 2011. I guess they have to work it out.. Brian, Al, Bruce and Mike. Dave Marks wow!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
For many years I always thought Mike Love was the best singer in the band. After hearing songs like this and "God Only Knows," I think Carl was just as good and just as valuable a singer as was Love. It's soooooo sad that he died. Of course, it's just as sad that Dennis died too. Nobody lives forever, but these men died way before their time. Hundreds of years from now people will still listen to music from the Beach Boys, the Beatles, Elvis, and other talented legends.
I think Mike's voice was important for that early sound. his bass voice was his important contribution for me. though i think brian could do it anyway. Brian has the best voice for me. then carl and dennis.
@colderbeer Just read your comment on Mike Love's voice, and respect your opinion. For me, Mike's best vocal bass was on Don't Worry Baby especially when Lorrie Morgan is covering it. But IMHO Carl could knock spots off Mike as far as singing, and being a decent human being goes. Rarely will you hear anything negative said about Carl. It IS sad both Dennis & Carl died so young-you're right there.
I saw the group do this in '71, at Santa Monica civic Auditorium & to me, this is better. Maybe it's better sound, but Carl's voice is just so perfect on this song! He produced it for the record, & Brian never sang on it. Carl, we miss you more as the years go by. Wolfsky9
I can here music thanks to Brother Carl. The band is still a good act But Mike and Bruce really Should call Al Dave And Brian before their joke continues.
I believe he was diagnosed in fall of 97, and died in February of 98. Not positive, though. It was a terrible blow to lose Carl. What a gorgeous man and a gorgeous voice. We love you Carl.
Sir, With respect, you are a year off. It must have been Aug of '97, because Carl wasn't diagnosed until spring of '97 [ see Phil Galdstone's Notes on " Like A Brother" for the time placement. In Aug. of '97, yes, sadly, Carl was very ill, and made it until Early Sept., when he was no longer able to get onstage. In '96, when this song was recorded, he was still in good health. Wolfsky9
"Anyway, it's called 'I Can Hear Music'..."

It's so wonderful to hear Carl sing so beautifully -- and so tragic that he was taken from us so soon afterwards.

The music of this band makes me speechless over and over again. Carl's voice is so beautiful. Gone far too young.

Mike Love was probably the best "all-around" singer for the band. I can't really disagree with anything you said.....

@colderbeer Mike Love's singing would be booed out of the shower by the shampoo bottle

Note Carl's expressive vibrato and his power-singing from his chest, not his throat/mouth. One of the best of the 20th Century.

Wow Carls voice is surprisingly good here. Especially seeing how old he is. I was expecting a bit of an elton john tone change lol
I dont keep up with beach boys live lol

Sadly, the great Carl Wilson didn't have a lot of time left at this point.

The 90's live rendition of ICHM had a very adult contemporary feel to it, much like the Stars & Stripes studio version.
