Brahms is the undisputed master of second themes. The second theme in this piece, the violin concerto 1st movement, the B major piano trio 1st and 4th movements, and the 1st movement of violin sonata no. 1 (I'm sure there are more), all make me cry every single time I hear them. I just can't help myself.
Seeing the notes accompany the sounds emanating from a great set of musicians playing one of the most renowned compositions is an immense privilege. Thank you so much.
I'm not sure I will every be able to articulate exactly why this piece is so deeply moving, but it is amongst the most divine things ever created. Makes me tear up every time.
@nomorepinkowls it is probably because he must have been falling in love when he wrote it... there is a sense of wonder that comes trough in the music... that funny feeling of "melting of the insides", so wonderful and scary, that one has when love is only about yet to crystallize possibilities.
Ecstatic, passionate music. It moves me every time I listen to it. I think this is one of the best chamber music movements Brahms ever wrote. Thank you for posting AND providing the score!
I first heard this piece on Star Trek TNG! I've loved that 2minute excerpt ever since! Then I heard it in another popular TV show in the UK: "Inspector Morse.! One of the characters named it, and so now I'm here listening to it. Beautiful and sublime! Thank You!!
@bobthefireeater The picece you're referring to is after this one. It's the 2nd movement, so you'd be looking for: Brahms' String Sextet #1 In B Flat, Op. 18 - 2. Andante, Ma Moderato
Thank you so much for uploading this. My violin teacher picked this sextet for us and It really helps to hear it and I couldn't find a recording anywhere. Thank you again and the score really helps as well!

This is in a major key. Why is it so sad at times?

What is that strange shape in the middle of each page of the score?
hypsophilus 2 years ago
@hypsophilus It's the watermark of the Brahms Institut, which contributed the sheet music to the imslp.org collection.

@hypsophilus
Possibly a watermark so people wouldn't illegally print and sell it.
